No. 19 Butler held off a pesky Evansville team yesterday, 75-67. Rotnei Clarke and Andrew Smith led Butler with 20 points each yesterday, including Clarke sinking some free throws to help Butler hold on. Clarke also made some nice 3 pointers yesterday, and made some nice drives to the basket.

Does anyone know the story behind a White kid getting the first name of "Rotnei"???

still more to come on other games later, but for now i'll make a quick post on the BYU-Va Tech game.

before the opening tip, the commentators said the Cougars would have trouble guarding the "affleticism" of the Hokies all-black starting lineup on the perimeter. wrong.

the "stiff-hipped" BYU defense completely erased the nation's leading scorer, Erick [sic] Green. coming in, Green averaged over 25 points-per-game, but the Cougars held him to just 14 points. equally as impressive is how many shots it took for him to get into double figures. he shot an abysmal 4 of 18 from the floor, including 0 for 6 from 3-point range. as a team, the Jokies went a dreadful 2 for 21 from long range, for an anemic 9.5%. ouch!

BYU completely controlled the game from the start, and super sophomore Tyler Haws hot shooting was a big part of it. he finished the first half with 29 points (on 9 of 13 shooting), helping turn the game into a blowout.

despite cooling off in the second half, Haws finished the game with a new career-high 42 points (on 14 of 25 from the floor). he also had 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist.

BYU put it on cruise control early in the second half when they went up by 30. even emptying their bench, BYU ended up winning by 26, 97-71.

the Cougars open conference play on January 3.

a few updates from around the country ...

Jared Berggren continues to play excellent basketball for the Badgers. he finished with 10 points (on 4 of 6 shooting), 9 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots in Wisconsin's well-balanced dismantling of Samford.

5 players scored in double figures for the Badgers (4 of whom are White men), including the impressive freshman Sam Dekker with 12. this kid has a BRIGHT future. guard Ben Brust didn't hit double digits in scoring (he had 8), but he had 6 assists and ZERO turnovers in 30 minutes, while adding 4 boards.

Rotnei Clarke missed his first six shots, but he kept shooting ... and hit 6 of his next 7. despite the cold start (where he admitted to forcing several bad shots), Clarke still managed to finish the game hitting nearly 50% of his shots, connecting on 7 of 15 from the floor for a game-high 22, as Butler crushed Vanderbilt, 68-49.

one wonders how a "mighty" SEC team lost to all those "gym rats" from Butler ... who frequently had 4 over-achievers on the court at the same time. despite all those "blue collars", Butler built a big enough lead to sit their starters for much of the second half.

freshman Kellen Dunham added 12 for the Bulldogs.

Doug McDermott continues to quietly build his case as National Player of the Year. the Creighton junior scored 29 (on 9 of 15 shooting) and snagged 10 rebounds, as the Bluejays cruised past Evansville.

if you've not seen McDermott, you're missing out. he makes the game look easy, despite not being a high flyer. it's no wonder the "experts" at ESPN "somehow" never manage to talk about him ...

Colt Ryan, a superlative-yet-highly-underrated player himself, scored 25 for the Aces in a losing cause.

it seems few people are noticing, but Erik Murphy is playing well for Florida. in the Gators' most recent game, he was once again the best player on the court.

Murphy went for a game-high 21 points (on 8 of 10 shooting), while also nabbing a game-high 7 rebounds, dishing out a game-high 4 assists, and blocking a game-high 3 shots while committing ZERO turnovers in 29 minutes. it makes me wonder why Billy Donovan quit recruiting White kids ...

yet another incredibly productive yet incredibly under-rated player (are we noticing a pattern here?), Saint Mary's Matthew Dellavedova has the Gaels poised for another run at a conference title. in their penultimate tune-up before opening conference action, Dellavedova scorched the nets for 24 points (on 9 of 13 shooting) while passing out 6 assists and pulling down 3 boards from his point guard spot.

Dellavedova is going to leave Saint Mary's as one of the best players in school history.

Jeff Withey has to be the frontrunner for National Defensive Player of the Year. doesn't he? he blocked 4 more shots in Kansas' most recent outing, while adding 11 points (on 5 of 7 shooting) and snaring 4 rebounds. just another day for one of the most athletic bigs in the country.

Zags fans have been (impatiently) waiting for sophomore point guard Kevin Pangos to break out of his shooting slump. well, he did. in a BIG way.

Pangos knocked down SEVEN 3-pointers on Friday, en route to scoring a game-high 31 points as Gonzaga knocked off Baylor in a very entertaining ball game on national tv, 94-87.

Pangos, who came in averaging 10 points and making 36 percent of his 3-point attempts, went 10 for 13 and finished two points shy of his career high.

Kelly Olynyk added 21 (connecting on 9 of 12 from the field) and helped Gonzaga shoot 65 percent in the second half. Pangos and Olynyk combined to score 15 straight Gonzaga points over a five-minute span to help the Bulldogs create a cushion, and Baylor would get no closer than 5 points over the final 10 minutes of the game.

Gonzaga has been a joy to watch as Olynyk has emerged the last couple of weeks. hopefully, they will continue improving and make a deep run come March.

in women's college basketball, this weekend featured a game between #1 Stanford and #2 UConn. "somehow," between these two dominant teams, 6 White athletes were featured in the starting 10, and that doesn't count UConn's phenomenal freshman Breanna Stewart (who leads the team in scoring AND rebounding) who came off the bench. Stanford's sixth man was also a White athlete.

so, i'd like the "experts" to explain how the two best teams in the country each have 4 White athletes in the top 6 of their rotation ... isn't that impossible?

by the way, Stewart is likely going to be the National Freshman of the Year. that girl is a bad ass!

finally, today features a couple of fun games to watch on national tv.

at 3:00 p.m. on ESPN, Indiana takes on a young Iowa team that has 6 White men averaging more than 15 minutes-per-game. the Hawkeyes start 3 freshman (2 of whom are White) and 1 sophomore (the aptly-named high-flying Aaron White). it should be a very entertaining matchup.

at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN2, #13 Gonzaga takes on #22 Oklahoma State. OSU is undefeated at home this year, and each team has only one loss so far this season.

the Cowboys "allow" two White athletes to see the floor. sharp-shooting-but-short freshman Phil Forte averages double figures in scoring but usually comes off the bench. athletic senior center Philip Jurick leads the team in rebounding and blocked shots, but he is rarely used on offense other than as a screener.

at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN2, Saint Mary's takes on Harvard. last year Harvard was very good, but i'm unaware of anything but their record (which isn't impressive) this year.

Thanks for the updates Jimmy! I was going to comment on the Butler and Gonzaga games, but I've been very busy this weekend, and never got the chance. Just a couple of comments...

It's nice to see Wisconsin playing better again! I wish Josh Gasser wasn't out for the year, I think his absence is big for Wisconsin.

On Harvard, I watched them lose to Vermont earlier this year, and Tommy Ammaker only lets a couple of white guys play for him. One, Canadien Laurent Rivard, starts. The other, forward Jonah Travis, comes off of the bench. So there is nearly nothing to cheer about with Harvard, I hope the Gaels blow these losers out.

I've been noticing Erik Murphy playing well, he looks to be the best player on the Gators this year. But the media NEVER talks about him, in fact, when I was reading an article about their most recent game from the other day, the title read: Boynton helps lead Gators past...." I thought this was odd, since Erik Muprhy had better numbers in every facet of the game, yet he still can not get a mention in the title. Murphy is going to make an NBA team very, very happy one day!

Another player that gets little to no media mention is K-State guard Will Spradling. He plays 30 minutes per game, is third on the team with nearly 10 PPG, and averaging a nice 2.53 assist to TO ratio.

If you want to watch a fun team, turn ESPN2 on and watch Gonzaga. They're playing a fun game to watch right now with Oklahoma State. The Zags are up right now, 54-51. Kelly Olynyk and Kevin Pangos are playing great right now. Pangos has 21 points on the game, and Olynyk was held scoreless in the first half, but has turned it on in the 2nd, with 12.

Phil Forte is on fire right now for Oklahoma State. He is 4-7 on three pointers.

Jack was right about the Gonzaga-Oklahoma State game. it was a very fun contest to watch, albeit a frustrating one, that the Zags won late, 69-68.

Gonzaga was able to get OSU in foul trouble by pounding the ball inside in the second half (especially with Olynyk), but in the final five minutes of the game the referees swallowed their whistle when the home team (Oklahoma State) was on defense. they allowed the Cowboys to simply mug the Bulldogs. fortunately for Gonzaga, Kelly Olynyk is now a monster.

after a redshirt year, much of which was spent in the weight room, Olynyk is now ferocious around the rim. he didn't complain when the OSU defenders shoved him, grabbed him, hacked him; he simply got so physical that he couldn't be stopped.

Olynyk, who didn't take a shot or get a rebound in the first half due to two quick fouls, took over the game late. he scored 21 points and snagged a game-high 9 rebounds, all in the second half, and Kevin Pangos had 23 points (tied for game-high) and 5 assists with just 1 turnover despite tough defense to earn a hard-fought (almost literally) win.

for the Cowboys, Philip Jurick snagged a team-high 7 rebounds, and Phil Forte scored 15 (on 5 for 8 from 3-point range) in a rare start. and to give credit where it's due, Marcus Smart played a very good game for Ok State. he scored 23 (tied for a game-high) and had 6 assists. he did have 4 turnovers, however.

if you missed the Indiana-Iowa game on Monday, you missed out on a very good basketball game ("despite" each team having 4 White athletes on the floor at times).

Iowa's young bunch did a terrific job of slowing down Indiana's vaunted fast break and refused to let the Hoosiers pull away, before they finally succumbed 69-65.

Cody Zeller dominated in the second half, scoring 15 of his game-high 19 points. he added a (tied for) game-high 10 rebounds, as well. Will Sheehey scored 13 (on 5 of 11 shooting) and snared 5 boards. Victor Oladipo (who is black) played very well, also, scoring 14 (on 6 of 10 shooting) and collecting 10 boards. equally as important as Sheehey's and Oladipo's scoring was their performance on defense. they helped hold Iowa to a dismal 33% from the floor, and specifically frustrated Iowa's leading scorer Roy Marble (black). they gave the Hawkeye a black eye, as he went an abysmal 1 for 14 from the floor. ouch!

likewise, Iowa's stellar defense frustrated the normally sharp-shooting Jordan Hulls, holding the sniper scoreless as he went 0 for 10 on the night. ouch again!

the high-flying Aaron White (15 points and 6 boards) and silent assassin Mike Gesell (13 points) carried the offensive load for Iowa. the Hawkeyes are going to be VERY tough this year.

please pardon the double post, but i wanted to update tonight's games.

Duke just finished their game with Davidson, and the Blue Devils looked very, very tough on defense. what was a close game at the half, quickly became not close in the second half.

the Dukies revved up the defensive intensity to open the second stanza, holding the Wildcats to 1 for 10 shooting while the Blue Devils went on a 14-2 run. after that, Davidson never threatened again.

Ryan Kelly provided the offensive firepower for Duke, scoring a team-high 18 points and snagging 7 rebounds while adding 1 blocked shot. Mason Plumlee scored a season-low 10 points (and had 6 turnovers! yikes!) to go along with 7 boards and 3 blocks.

Davidson features a very balanced attack with 4 White starters.* 7 White players play double figure minutes on the year, and they did so in this game, as well. only one black player (a starting forward) sees the floor.

Jake Cohen was the lone double-figure scorer for the Wildcats, finishing with a game-high 19 points to go along with 8 rebounds.

Ryan Kelly (12.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.9 bpg) and Jake Cohen (12.7 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.5 bpg) are very, VERY similar players and are among the most versatile athletes in collegiate basketball today. both Kelly (6-foot-11) and Cohen (6-foot-10) are lanky, long-armed face-up fours who are equally comfortable in both the paint and on the perimeter, with both a knack for blocking shots and knocking down 3's. it'd be very cool to have a frontline with these two guys playing at the same time.

Kentucky sophomore Kyle Wiltjer scored a game-high 17 points (on 7 of 15 shooting) in 22 minutes off the bench in a cakewalk tonight over Eastern Michigan.

Ohio State point guard Aaron Craft dominated the game against Nebraska tonight, despite going scoreless. Craft finished with 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 8 assists with ZERO turnovers in 29 minutes. his defense was, as usual, stellar.

despite a poor shooting night from every single player other than forwards Marshall and Jones, Butler's defense and rebounding carried them to a 70-57 win over Penn.

Rotnei Clarke shot an awful 2 for 11, Andrew Smith went 1 for 7, and the bench went a combined 4 for 12. but the Bulldogs out-rebounded the Quakers 35 to 19 and forced 19 turnovers to earn the win.

hopefully, this cold shooting night will be the last of its kind this year ... also, Butler faces off against Gonzaga on national television on January 19.

Hello gentlemen. I started to follow college basketball closely when Gonzaga started fielding very atheltic caucasian lead teams back in 1999. They had high flyers like Casey Calvary and Mark Spink and a very underrated point guard in Matt Santangelo.
Does anyone here think that Gonzaga will start moving in the right direction with an influx of more white players lately as they have shunned that formula the last 6 to 8 years I suppose.

In an overlooked game last night, understandably due to the fact it featured almost all blacks with some of the absurdest possible names, a White athlete shone the brightest. That game was St. John's vs Villanova and that athlete was 18 year old point guard, Ryan Arcidiacono. The Wildcat freshman had a career high 32 points on 7 of 13 three point attempts to lead his team to victory. Don't think Ryan is a one-trick pony as he was able to get to the free throw line 13 times, converting 11 of them.

On the season, Ryan has shown the ability to score, averaging 13 points per game. However, his distribution needs work (or maybe he needs more competent players to pass to) as he only averages 3 1/2 assists per game. His turnovers are a bit too high as well. If he can improve in this area he could become one of the elite point guards in the country. As far as D1 White PG talents go, he could be our best prospect with respect to Aaron Craft, Matthew Dellavedova, Nate Wolters and Kevin Pangos.

i'm hoping the coaching staff noticed the VERY BIG fall off in play when they changed their recruiting philosophy a few years ago.

with their on-court success from '99 to the early 2000's came media recognition for the program. as their play continued to improve, so did the program's profile. as it happened, it followed that the coaches stopped recruiting hungry, chip-on-their-shoulder White kids who the program's success was built upon and began targeting "real" talents (which means black players, of course). not suprisingly, the highly-touted "phenoms" came in and promptly began laying eggs. despite the highest early-season acclaim and the blackest rosters in school history in the handful of years that followed, the program fell off considerably and began a habitual early-Tournament disappearing act.

now, the program is Whiter than it has been in over half a decade (often with 5 White players on the court simultaneously), and they're playing amazing basketball. additionally, the only two commitments for the Class of 2013 are White men.

that being said, i wouldn't make the conclusion that Few is going to stay pale and powerful. they've targeted a large number of affletes in the 2014 group. i guess we'll just have to wait and see.

this is a very good game; it has a post-season feel to it, and i wouldn't be surprised if both teams qualify for the NCAA Tourney. Gonzaga is up 41-34 at intermission.

Kelly Olynyk has simply been incredible, highlighted (perhaps - he's had several impressive plays, after all) by A) his game-opening one-man fast break dunk and B) getting a defensive rebound, bringing the ball up the court in transition, pulling up off the dribble and nailing a three. he's simply playing lights out basketball and has 17 points (on 7 of 8 shooting), 5 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot in the first half (and should have 3 assists). the Broncos have found no answer to him as of yet.

for Santa Clara, i had completely forgotten about Marc Trasolini (he missed last year with an ACL). the bouncy, sharp-shooting senior leads the WCC in blocked shots and already has 2 in this game, as well as hitting a triple. he has 5 points at the break.

what a game!

both teams played at a very high level, but Santa Clara simply had no answer for Kelly Olynyk.

the 7-foot former high school point guard showcased not only his physical prowess finishing at the rim, but he also repeatedly showcased his ability to create off the dribble (for both himself and others) and knock down the outside shot. he was a man amongst boys tonight, and Gonzaga needed him because it was a night where their guards were largely quiet.

Olynyk finished with a double-double and a new career high of 33 points (on 12 of 15 shooting), with 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Elias Harris chipped in with a solid 14 points (on 3 of 6 from the floor) but just 2 rebounds.

for Santa Clara, played valiantly but was simply overmatched by the Zags' frontline. he ended the game with 19 points (on 7 of 14 shooting), 9 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 assists. WCC affletic leading scorer Kevin Foster, who finished with an impressive 29 (albeit it on 10 of 24 shooting), played hard and very effectively, but none of the highly-touted affletes on the Broncos' frontline were nearly affletic enough to hang with Olynyk.

so for a few updates on a terrific day of basketball.

Duke's Ryan Kelly was red-hot in a win over Wake Forest. he hit 5 3-pointers (on 7 attempts) and finished tied for a game-high 22 points (on 6 of 9 shooting) with 1 blocked shot and 4 boards.

Mason Plumlee chipped in with another double-double, 13 points and 12 boards to go along with 2 assists and 1 block.

Aaron Craft had a strong game in Ohio State's blowout loss. in 38 minutes, he scored 11 (on 4 of 10 from the floor) while adding 4 boards, 3 assists, and 4 steals with ZERO turnovers.

i can't recall having ever watched Mike Muscala play before, and i'm not happy about it. he is a MONSTER. the junior forward from Bucknell almost single-handedly pulled off a major upset over #12 Missouri on the road, before finally falling 66-64. he finished with 25 points (on 10 of 17) and 14 rebounds with 4 assists and 2 blocks. wow! this guy is WAY underrated.

Grant Gibbs chipped in with 8 assists (but an awful-for-him 3 turnovers; is that a career-high?!? LOL), 4 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot to go along with 4 points.

Notre Dame sixth-year senior Scott Martin knocked down 6 3-pointers in route to a game-high 22 points (on 8 of 11 shooting) in a win. Jack Cooley continues to show why he is the best big man in the Big East, notching yet another double double with 19 points and 13 boards.

a young team to keep an eye on is Boston College. every major contributor is either a freshman or sophomore, and 5 White athletes average double figure minutes (along with 3 almost-White, light, bright mulattoes).

they would have knocked off #23 NC State if not the for the late-game heroics of Scott Wood for the Wolfpack. Wood knocked down a 3 and 4 consecutive free throws to escape. he finished with 12 points on 2 of 6 shooting.

Maryland features a couple of impressive young talents on their frontline. sophomore center Alex Len continues to make a case for being an all-conference player. he finished today's win over VA Tech with 16 (on 6 of 12) with 9 boards, 2 assists, and 1 block.

athletic freshman forward Jake Layman was the player of the game, however. he finished with 20 points (also on 6 of 12 from the floor), 8 boards, 3 assistis, and 2 blocks with ZERO turnovers in 29 minutes. he's got a BRIGHT future.

Davidson bounced back from the Duke loss with a well-balanced effort in a blowout win. 5 players (4 White, well Cohen is jewish) scored in double figures and Chris Czerapowicz pulled down 10 rebounds.

Thats just a staggering statistic! What a player!!!

For what its worth I was goin back and fourth between the Army high school game, and the OSU at KSU basketball game on tv today. At one point this little white guard for OSU crossed over his negro defender, and tried to put up a floater, but the negro absolutely assaulted him. If ever there was a foul this was it, but of course no call. The commentators quickly ridiculed the white guys "lack of ability to create off the dribble". Later his negro teammates were passing the rock around amongst themselves, and totally ignoring him until the shot clock read 3 seconds. Finally he got the ball just in time to heave one up, but he couldnt beat the buzzer. Again the commentators blamed him, and only him for the violation. I dont know who that youngster is, but its clear hes the scapegoat at OSU.

I was not familiar with this guy til now. Good find!

He's had an interesting career path. He's from Texas but started his career at Utah (probably due to lack of interest locally). Then he transfers to Texas Tech and sits out a year. Before ever playing a game for them, head coach Pat Knight is fired and Henderson transfers again. This time to junior college South Plains where he leads them to an undefeated season, the #1 ranking and the national championship. Now he's at Ole Miss leading the SEC in scoring with another year of eligibility under his belt. His story could have been a disaster so it's satisfying to see him having success!

Wes, I'm pretty sure the white guard you were watching was Phil Forte, who is a really good shooter. He decided to go to OSU over bigger school such as Kansas to be with his high school teammate, Marcus Smart, the Cowboys' starting PG.

That's pretty cool to hear about Marshall Henderson! When I was watching his highlights last night, I was shocked that Ole Miss actually let a white guy play for them.

EJ Singler had a nice game for Oregon in their upset of #4 Arizona tonight, scoring 14 points to go along with 14 points, 7 assists, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals.

Butler got some great performances yesterday from Rotnei Clarke and Andrew Smith for their first A10 win against St. Joeseph's. Clarke was huge last night, coming up with 28 points(including 6-10 on threes), 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while playing nearly the entire game. Smith had an equally impressive game with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 block. Clarke and Smith are key for Butler; if they play well, Butler has a great chance to win any game that they play. The Bulldogs are a very fun team to watch, and will be playing Dayton on Saturday.

Right now, if anybody is still up, Gonzaga and St. Mary's are on ESPN 2 right now. If you want to watch two teams with a bunch a good white players, this is the game. Kelly Olynyk and Kevin Pangos are on fire right now for Gonzaga, with Olynyk having 11 points on 5-6 shooting, and Pangos is playing well with 10 points. These two are very fun to watch. Olynyk is just dominating the Gaels inside right now. He has so many offensive moves, and is such a beast on the glass. There are not many players in the country playing better than Olynyk right now.

Matthew Dellavedova has been held to 8 points this half so far; the Zags have been frustrating him all night. Dellavedova is 2/7 shooting right now. Gonzaga is up by 11, and the Gaels will need their senior leader to step it up if they want to stay competitive in this game.

Notre Dame is currently playing St. John's on ESPN2 right now. I know Freethinker has posted about how disgusting St. John's has become. I'm actually shocked that I'm seeing their white player out there right now! Jack Cooley and Garrick Sherman have each missed an easy bunny for the Irish, who lead 21-18 at the moment.
