actually, 1998 was a race where I fell Shirvington DIDN'T fade in the closing stages. He was full of adrenalin and youthful enthusiasm, unfettered from other peoples'expectations and just ran free. Fredericks in the next lane was the barometer to measure his last 30 metres by.

Taking note of the 4 Italians on the Top 10 list this year, it occurs to me that behind Lemaitre the Italian trio - Cerutti, Collio, DiGregorio - have actually been the best white sprinters (time-wise) over the last few seasons:

Cerutti
201010.220.5w
200910.151.0w
200810.13-0.1w

Collio
201010.290.6w
200910.061.2w
200810.280.4w

DiGregorio
201010.201.2w
200910.210.2w
200810.281.1w

Tobias Unger would probably be next on the list
201010.32
200910.18
200810.17

Nice job jacknyc. Very cool to compare the guys. I'm hoping Christian Blum is going to throw down a eye popping time very soon. Also Robert Herring and Martin Keller need to step it up. Unger has probably already peaked in my opinion at 30 but I'm hope I'm wrong.

Don't forget that Simone Collio ran a 10.06 last year at 30-31 too. It's all about training hard, eating right and taking care of your body. Edited by: white lightning

Simone Collio just ran a 10.19 in Italy.
That moves him up to #3 in the rankings.
Irishman's Jason Smyth's 10.27 was wind aided, so I dropped him from the list.

I recently saw a re-run of Pickering's race in Ostrava. I'm no sprinting expert, but I find it puzzling why white sprinters can't display the amazing lift and kick black sprinters like Powell were showing.

Pickering's from wasn't bad, despite going 10.38, but I can't understand why he can't display such lift and kick. Then there's the staring thing, the only white sprinter who had amazing kick start and acceleration was Armin Hary. Every white sprinter I've known (including Borzov) always start slow, accelerate midway, and fade in the last 10-30 meters. Shirvo was a bit like Hary, but tends to fade in the last 30 meters (like in the 1998 Commonwealth final).

Whatever the other reasons are, I hope Lemaitre can eventually display the amazing lift and kick every black sprinter are known for.

Can you describe the image of the leg lift and kick or provide a link to its form? I always thought that whites were quicker during the accleration phase, due to a strength advantage allowing more forceapplied to thegroundand slower in the speed endurance, at least in the endurance portion of the 100m, owing to that same body structure - larger torso, shorter legs, and larger calf muscle - that enables their strength advantage. I'm excited about Collio and his season so far. He is getting towards peak shape a little earlier in the season this year. He ran a 10.06 p.b. last season. Can he possible beat Lemaitre to the first sub 10? We shall see. The best thing about it is that the italian sprinters prove whites can run fast into their 30's despite alot of other white sprinters peaking early in their careers. Maybe Pickering should move to Italy.

Simone Collio has had a very solid career. I would love to see him do well at the Euro Champs. He probably will only run up until London in 2012. Hopefully he can keep this up for a few more years. Viva Italy!

AlphaM, keen observation.
But I do think there is something about the training of the white sprinters that equates "smoothness" with "proper form", and maybe this is now out-dated coaching. A little bit of shoulder dip and sway is the new method, adding a few centimeters per stride without causing too much inefficiency. Viewed from a top video, these "reckless" sprinters have a bit of shoulder rotation, but the "smooth" style of sprinting pumps the arms like crazy but without really pulling on the hips. Chambers, Gay, Bolt -- they all do this very slight over-reach. Gay is really a master of it, with everything powering forward, but without over-twisting.

I might try to find a link to where I first read about this.Edited by: Observer

I don't you can come to any real conclusions based on just Powell and Pickering. They are at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Powell has a great start and pick-up. Pickering has a terrible start and an OK pick-up phase.
You would to look at a lot more guys to come to any conclusions.Edited by: jacknyc

It looks like Tobias Unger ran a 10.14 in Germany yesterday (Blum 10.27), and Jan Veleba 10.23 in the Czech Republic.
If times are legit, the top 10 now looks like this:

1/Christophe Lemaitre 10.02 - 20yrs old
2/Tobias Unger 10.14
3/Simone Collio 10.16 - 31yrs old
4/Aaron Rouge-Serret 10.17- 22yrs old
5/Emanuele DiGregorio 10.20 - 29 yrs old
6/Fabio Cerutti 10.22 - 24yrs old
7/Angel David Rodriguez 10.22 - 30 yrs old
8/Matt Davies 10.23 - 25yrs old
8/Jan Veleba 10.23
10/Giovanni Tomasicchio 10.25 - 28yrs old

observer, your not far wrong, but gun reaction does not mean a decisive first 20 meters, pickup is probably more important. start is vital in order to put yourself in a good position to pick up{kick, pick up phase} this requires alot of strenght.speed maintenance is huge ie. slowing the onset of deceleration. over the years there have been dominant white 60meter sprinter eg. nagel , papadias even pickering{2007}, woronin had an exceptional first 10-20meters.men who can hit the 6.5s in the 6ometers usually have excellent starting ability, but its what comes after ie. the next 40meters

i am fascinated how much technique is under estimated, there is no magic no excuses just focus ,inner belief and years of trial and error. that being all things being equal ie. no doping!

all i can say is hary over 100 and sime over 200 , all done in crap spikes and basically on red ash[ red dirt] , no comparison with the much faster tracks of today.both excellent exponents of knee lift with tremendous technique, including leg cadence both of these guys were immensely strong athletes.[have alook at their training programs ,harys can only be found in german,"den tolste sprinter den es je gab" aquote by owens after he saw him win in 1960, ie the best sprinter there ever has been.bobby morrow another natural and the forgotten man peter norman!

The UK's top female sprinter Laura Tuner set a new PB over the weekend running a wind assisted 11.11 100M in Switzerland.
This is Laura in a previous race.

She also doesn't have a build of a drug cheat. Very slim upper body wise. The various Jamaicans that have burst upon the world scene are built more top heavy. I wonder why....

This is a question for the track experts. I know a good deal about track, but I can't figure out an answer to this question.

Why are there quite a few white women in track from Europe, ranging from sprints to middle and long distances, but virtually next to no white American women? Other than Shannon Rowbury and Anna Willard running the middle distances, I'm not aware of any white American females in any other track events at all.

It's good to see the Russians and Eastern Europeans carry the banner, but why aren't there more Americans?

Mostly because American Men and Women are brain washed. They believe that black athletes in general are better. It didn't used to be this way but after countless decades of the media forcing the belief down our throats, americans believe this. There are alot of white american women from the 800 meters all the way up to the 5000 and 10,000 meters. They do pretty good. It's mainly the sprinters where the stereotypes are seen the most. White women in general have been more competetive than white men in the sprints. We need this to change to help get rid of the stupid stereotypes.

Kind of like white men can't jump. Very untrue yet so many believe it. Whites dominate the high jump against everyone in the world. We are the greatest jumpers.
