I have doubts about Pickering improving. He really did not have a good season indoors or outdoors last year. This year he opened with a 6.66 in Glasgow.
Last year he ran 6.57 at that meet. In 2008 he also ran 6.57 there, and in 2007 he ran 6.55 there. So a significant drop already. This does not bode well for his season. But let's see what happens!
Meanwhile, it would be nice to see another young guy break through. Just for fun, I'll pick Andrew Robertson from Great Britain, but he's a long shot.

Andrew Robertson ran a 10.30w (2.8) in Belgium this wkend.
He's only 19 yrs old, and has a best of 10.37 from last year.
Definitely someone to keep an eye on.

I like Robertson but he would really have to increase his strike rate drastically to ever apporach 10 seconds. He is very talented but he is so short. Some guys have over come this and went on to excel like Walter Dix. Will watch out for the kid. You never now.

Also Richard Kilty who ran a 10.40 before he blew out his hamstring around a month ago.

yeah, Robertson showed some speed in that Euro junior 100 last year but he is really so short.
At a cadence of nearly 5 strides per second he'll have to produce enough extra power to knock 2 strides off his 100 to get around 10 flat. Given actual stride (as in the range of motion/angles his legs cover) is pretty well fixed, he'll have to cover over 3 inches more ground per stride by employing a more powerful toe-off).
But is 3-4% more unreasonable to expect?Edited by: mastermulti

He's 173cm = 5ft 8.1inches. Short, but not 'so short'.

Rytis Sakalauskas set another New Lithuanian Record in the 100. At 23 he still has plenty of time to push toward the 10 second mark over the next 5-7 years. He is one guy to keep an eye on.

Obviously Christophe Lemaitre was the story of the year.
A fantastic break through, head and shoulders above the rest of the guys, and still lots more to come.
Italy has several guys in the mix, but not sure if they are capable of much more. They seem to be making the most of what they have.
Australia had a couple of guys who performed well early in the year, but did nothing much afterwards.
Ramil Guliyev was out most of the year with injury, but came back a little at the very end of the year. Hopefully, we will see more of him next year. He has the most potential outside of Lemaitre.
Veleba and Sakalauskas are fairly young, so hopefully there's more to come.
Others:
Martynas Jurgilas ran a 10.27 at the age of 22.
Greg Rutherford, a LJer, ran a 10.26. Amazing time for a guy who doesn't train as a sprinter.
Christian Blum was a bit of disappointment, but was coming off an injury. Let's see if he improves next year.

Great work as usual jacknyc. I would be shocked if 2011 isn't another big year. It will probably come close to 2009 as far as times are concerned with the World Champs next summer. The next two years shoud be barn burners. I expect Guliyev and Pickering to return to form next season. Craigs new coach is breaking down his form. He is trying to teach Craig how to sprint with correct form. It won't be an easy job but is needs to be done. If only Pickering had a coach that would have done this a few years ago, he probably would have went sub 10 first like I thought he would. The talent is still there if he can get his form back and regain his confidence. I expect it to take a while but hopefully by the summer time he can start dropping his times again.

As you said with Blum, the injury has really held him back. At least he knows that he went the full year without a major injury. That should help him to get back to training harder. Watch out for Michael LeBlanc as he plans to continue. I don't know if he can regain his form or not but he is a sleeper to keep an eye on. Cerutti and DiGregorio are the italians to watch in my opinion. I think Collio has peaked out and will continue slowing down like Osovnikar. Hope I'm wrong though as Simone has been a joy to watch for around a decade now.

My sleeper to watch out for is still going to be Julien Watrin of Belgium. I'm not saying next year but within around 3-4 more years. This kid could make a name for himself.

As for PepeLeFlew(Lemaitre), I see him going into mid to high 9.80's range! It would make my summer to see him not only make the final at the world champs but go onto winning a medal in the individual 100 meters finals. Don't count him out despite long odds. My hope is that they concentrate on outdoors. A few indoor races would be ok but they should keep his indoor season very short. He needs to put on some serious strength and get his start and form fixed.

Daniel Talbot is probably the only other White sprinter I can think of. Being that he is 1/4 Trinidadian I suspect he is partially Black. But if you didn't know his ancestry you would think he is White.

you'd have to think Guliyev is on his way back up the sprinting tree with that 10.16 (-1.3)

I wonder where he'll turn up for his next meet. No-one else is on the international radar as yet unless Connaughton can step up. Another 1/10th for Pickering would be good to see too..

Great news guys. The Polish Speedster is back in form after around 4 years of regressing. Dariusz Kuc of Poland just ran a 10.15 wind legal today! This is such great news. I'm not saying he is going to go sub 10 but it sure should help his confidence. He finally broke his p.b. of 10.17 back when he was around 20 years of age. Way to go Dariusz! Can't wait to see what he does in his next race.

The wind was 1.2 and he beat Francis Obikwelu in the race. Kuc ran a 10.18 and a 10.15 in the same day and both were wind legal. Outstanding form for this time of year. Let's see if he can put up some more good times soon. At one time, many of us thought he would have been a huge star but like Pickering, injuries and others factors had stalled Kucs Career. I hope he is back on track. I still haven't given up on Craig Pickering either as he ran a 10.23 a few weeks ago which is his fastest time in a few years!

Is Andrey Yepishin still running? I always thought with his 10.10 national record in the 100m he'd be the first white sprinter to go under 10 seconds.

He ran last year but I think that he may have retired. Not sure but he just never was able to find the same form again. Many here at this board including myself had hoped he would have gotten closer to 10 seconds too. Andrey Yepishin had one of the best starts of any russian sprinter that I have ever seen. He was however very short and usually faded down the stretch outdoors.

Jonathan Astrand from Finland, who is tenth on the 100m list above, ran a legal 20.50 at the minor European team championships.
Paul Hession ran 20.65, and Likoúrgos-Stéfanos Tsákonas of Greece ran 20.70.
Nothing like Lemaitre, but definitely worth noting, especially Astrand.

Good job with all of the updates. You forgot to put JayConns 10.21 from last weekend in Florida in there. I would wait though. The Canadian Champs start today and I see him beating that time if the conditions are right. I still seee Jared running a sub 10 by the world champs. Call me crazy but I have a feeling!

I would think a low 10.1X or a high 10.0X would be more realistic. If he can do that he is a dark horse to final in the 200 meters at the world championships. By the way Canadian beer is strong, drink it slowly it's not like Genny Light or Bud Lite.....

Connaughton was the 3rd fastest qualifier for the finals with a time of 10.45 into a negative wind.
LeBlanc was the last qualifier - 10.57.
Let's hope for better weather and times in the finals.

Shane Crawford had a very poor performance at the US Nat'l Championships.I don't think we'll see him again, but I'm glad that he broke 10.20 this year.
Jeremy Wariner and Jordan Boase both qualified in their 400m heats, but Wariner's time was really slow for him. That's worrisome.
Let's hope for better there too.
