2011 Nebraska Cornhuskers

Tomorrow night, Rex Burkhead is going to have the biggest showcase for a white RB in quite sometime. ESPN College Game Day will be there all day and its the 8:00 game between the number 7&8 teams. Almost every DWF in the country will be watching getting ready to slobber all over Russell Wilson along with the announcers. If Rex can put on a show it will be great.......:cheer2:

Agreed! This will be an important Caste game that Nebraska needs to win. Hopefully the White Nebraska defenders will have a great game and help shut down Wisconsin's black quarterback. Just as importantly, Rex Burkhead needs to have a good game with at least a decent TD, along with Martinez getting some nice runs.
 
Unfortunatley, Burkhead is going to get shutdown today. I am not a fan of Wisconsin outside of J. Abbrederis but their d-line is just to good and there aren't going to be any holes open. I see Martinez trying to create his own plays by the third quarter and its going to backfire.

I think what you're saying is a little premature. Wisconsin hasn't played anybody of significance this season! Both teams are huge up front. I think it comes down to which defense will rise to the occasion.

Abbrederis has looked very good, and is catching some subpar throws.
 
On the FCS front today; White friendly Wofford took care 90% black Appalachian State 28-14. Woffords' Eric Breitenstein had 173 yds. on 33 carries.

ASU was ranked No. 3 and Wofford was No. 8, so I see Wofford jumping past ASU to possibly 5th or 4th!

I know this is old news but I attended the game and sat on the ASU side during the first half, while cheering for Wofford, and heard a DWF say that "Breitenstein wasn't fast because he's white, white people are not fast!" It still makes me sick to hear things like this from white people no matter how many times I hear it!

I did turn to one of his friends and say, why don't you say, "no black people are intelligent", to which I was told to let it go.

I know we hear things like that alot, but I don't "really" want it to get old to anyone on CF.

It's just so frustrating to hear comments like this when attending college and pro games. I am Christian and post Biblical messages on CF, but it was all I could do to restrain myself from confronting this DWF today!

Anyway, I guess another example of how a bunch of so-called slow white players whipped a 90% black starting line-up! Thought ya'll would like to know.

Congrats to Wofford! I use to go to high school with and personally know their starting safety. I hope they have a great year.

Who's the fastest Husker right now? Ahh, how'd you guess? Yep, some obscure in-state multi-sport (football, basketball, track) White walk-on.


Twenty-five years ago, NYT writer Malcolm Moran spent 10 days in Lincoln, trying to figure out why Nebraska was such a football power and if a team loading up on walk-ons was following all the rules or finding ways to get around them.

"If all these guys were so great, why didn’t somebody else recruit ‘em out of high school?" Moran asked me. "It’s not like Nebraska gets players other people want."

A Division I coach did offer Wullenwaber a scholarship, and it was from the same school he dreamed about playing for – Nebraska (for Track)

In high school, he ran a 10.5 in the 100 meters and a 21.6 in the 200 meters. He long jumped 24-1 and high jumped 6-9.

"Fastest kid on the team, I think," said fellow walk-on defensive tackle Justin Jackson (now moved to a more racially-appropriate position (Center)). "He has everyone’s respect."

Fellow fleet-footed wide receiver Kenny Bell agreed this week after watching Wullenwaber compete with Nebraska’s No. 2 offensive unit.

If you’re looking for more credibility, ask Alfonzo Dennard, Nebraska’s First-Team All-Big Ten Conference defensive back and possible first-round NFL draft choice. When Dennard came back from injury last season, he was impressed with the way Scout Teamer Wullenwaber raced right by him in practice and went out of his way to tell the walk-on how fast he is and how difficult he is to cover.


Well, at least the redshirt Sophomore went from being on the Scout Team to being on the No. 2 offensive unit. Maybe by the time he is a senior he'll be able to actually use that speed that so many coaches and fans, at least say they are looking for, as a starter, and get a well-deserved scholarship, to boot.
 
I guess not many affletes are humble enough to play second fiddle to a White runningback. Rex Burkhead still needs a change of pace back to give him a breather in a while, which why it wouldn't have hurt if Nebraska had recruited another back, didn't even have to be White, just non black. I don't mind seeing him get close to 30 carries in a game but it hurts when 10 of those are just bad reads by Martinez and he has to make something out of nothing, and most of the people aren't watching the games, they just see that his longest run is x amount of yards and didn't see the cirumcstances he was running under.

There were a few instances last year where I felt that he was just doing enough to get the first down and nothing more, but this was after being used carry after carry with no break.

Maybe this was just because the defense was doing poorly and he was told just to get the first down after a lead so they can keep the defense off the field, because there were times where he went down with an easy tackle when other times they were fighting for the game and he would make a much bigger run breaking much tougher tackles. These are the type of highlight runs he will constantly have to put up to get some real recognition.

Apparently for a White back to get it he will have to run over at least one guy, I am talking full head on, a few more stiff arms (which he already does) and jumping over someone apparently doesn't hurt either, but he likes to do the spin move which works as well.

It will help if Martinez progressed and was able to pass a little better and made some better reads (as a running qb he is supposed to be taken some of the burden off of Rex but only seems to add more) The offense is on Burkhead's shoulderes, while he can handle it and average a good ypc, the bigger runs decline as the season/games run on. Variety would help, a few more plays to the outside instead of mostly up the gut. At his size he was meant to be used in a variety of ways, and they have used him mostly as a power back/workhorse guy to move the chains.
 
Yes, Taylor Martinez' regression/non-progression was one of my biggest disappointments last year with the 'Huskers. The coaches should stake his cleats to the turf during the off-season and just make him throw throw throw. If he could develop his pocket awareness and his accuracy, to go with his athleticism, he could be something special. I still think that Bubba Starling would have been a better prospect, but he's busy with his big buck$ toiling away in the wretched Royals farm system.

One of the bigger stories during their Spring practice was the big strides that Martinez made in the passing game, especially improved foot work and the abililty to read a defense.

When he was back in California over a break, he was working out with some elite QB coach (can't remember the name), along with a couple of other affletic major college QBs and his improvement was praised.

The NU coaches also talked quite a bit about becoming a 50% pass offense, as opposed to the 30+% last season. Also, there was big talk on splitting carries more evenly between the three RB's. These things considered, I believe Rex's utilization and production would've been considerably reduced, so this is good news for him. It will be interesting to see if they bring Heard back from the CB position to the RB position which he was originally recruited to play.
 
Who knows if they'll bring Heard back from CB, but with Aaron Green transferring today, that leaves Rex and Ameer Abdullah at RB right now.


Highlander already mentioned him, but watch out for WR Tyler Wullenwaber this fall, he should be able to get some action, along with Tim Marlowe and true frosh Jordan Westerkamp.


Martinez improving his passing is very key to Nebraska's success this year.
