Semi-sentient head coach Jim Caldwell was fired today. That makes three black head coaches fired this off-season, but it shouldn't cause too much of a stir given that in Oakland a black GM was hired, who will probably hire a black head coach to replace Hue Jackson. Also, Romeo Crennell was retained in KC (a move which will keep that team mediocre at best in coming seasons). Hopefully Indy will now hire their first White head coach since before Tony Dungy (Jim Moron Sr.).
Would also be nice to see Spagnuolo become the defensive coordinator. He was victimized in St. Louis by an unbelievable amount of injuries, especially to WRs, and the crappy mostly sumo o-line that team has insisted on having since Mike Martz left, but the Rams' defense was among the Whitest in the league over the past 25 years, ranking with the Falcons about a decade ago, the Bills a few years ago, the Browns last year, and the Titans very briefly about six years ago -- all with five White starters and occasionally a "daring" White majority on the field at the same time.
The Colts interviewed ex-Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo for their defensive coordinator position on Monday. The timing is odd considering Spags interviewed with now-fired coach Jim Caldwell, among others, in Indy. If the Colts are serious about landing Spagnuolo, they join the Eagles and Saints in vying for his services, with the Falcons now out of the mix.
