2011/2012 Bowl Game Thread

This game has degenerated into the same slingfest as most Big 12 conference games. I will give full credit to Art Briles for designing a playbook that keeps teams so off-balance that they can't cover anything.


Edit: And Spielman reads from the ESPN script right on cue. "Baylor's offense can't cover anybody!"
Yet they never seem to level that criticism at Baylor's opponents.

Ganaway benefits from the same effect that has made Griffin a lottery winner.
Washington was spread so deep and wide on defense that Ganaway never really had to try very hard to gain yardage. All he had to do was hold onto the ball and run in the direction they pointed him.
Until more teams come up with sound solutions to defending the modern spread (Oregon, Baylor, Malzahnball), I think we'll continue to get a lot of overinflated numbers from underqualified athletes.

a better quarterback is on display right now for Tusla. As far as defending the spread, the time will come, defenses have already figured out the basic zone read, its only a matter of time to where they catch up to the adjustments some coordinators have made. It will be a cat and mouse game for a while but there is only so much the spread can evolve to. When Tebow played for Florida and the basic zone read was figured out they didn't adjust it like the new coordinators, they ran more traditional plays, like qb power. The spread "option offenses" right now aren't true option, real option you can make the defense wrong every single play with the right read, like with what Navy, Air Force and G Tech runs. A success might just be a 4 yard gain but its still a success. Plus the black quarterbacks don't always make the right read.

Tebow would have even better stats running these new offenses. The new adjustments didn't come out until 2010, but its only partially the scheme that can't stop the spread, its the players. They have to get better players that can tackle.

BYU also has a better QB on thier team. Also, Di Luigi just broke off a nice run for BYU against Tulsa.

Hopefully JJ will be more involved in this game, its his last game to showcase his skills for the nfl. His decreased role is sickening. Quezada has eating up plenty of snaps, 77 carries a whopping 3.6 ypc, a long of 15. Surely he must be some type of powerback/goal line specialist? a grand total of 1 td. As far as his receiving skills, 4 receptions for 21 yards. Michael Alisa took up 88 carries, he is a little better at running the ball but not by much, his ypc inflated by getting chunks of yards against Idaho State and Idaho, also not a threat as a receiver, 5 receptions. JJ has been fairly consistent with his ypc, running well against tougher run defenses like TCU with 6.9 ypc.

McKay Jacobson has been screwed even worse. He has great speed but they have phased him out of the offense and started using him on more shorter routes when he is in after guys like Apo came in. His first season he averaged 19.5 ypc and 2nd year averaged over 24 ypc with 500+ yards, they should have developed him into a featured receiver but they didn't. Now he is a senior and will be lucky to get a fa shot with his speed alone.

JJ with a couple of really nice runs, 8 and 7 yards on the final game-winning BYU drive. It was funny watching the Tulsa affletes trying to hold down the BYU players after the plays were over so that they couldn't line up. I was surprised that the officials didn't call delay of game penalties as they were so blatant. Didn't work for them, however!

DWID you are a genious. What a great game. I hate to admit it but Cody Hoffman is a very good receiver. Jacobson is going to be the Dane Sanzenbacher of next years draft. He wont get drafted but he will be somebodies 3rd wr next year.
Diluigi if he gets invited to the combine will be a third round draft pick. If not he will go in the 5th to 7th round. He is the best pass catching rb I have seen since Brian Leonard white or black. He has a chance to be a Woodhead with more carries. Also JD Falsev could play at the next level as a wr,rb and kr. Also BYU has a couple really good safeties.
Tulsa next year will have 5 scholarship wrs and 2 white rbs and I expect Caleb Muncreif to tear it up as a true freshman.

Steele Jantz in at QB for Iowa State now, replacing ineffective black quarterback Barnett. The announcers immediately stated that Jantz isn't the running threat that Barnett is (lacks proper melanin, after all) and then immediately rips off 12 and 28 yard runs!

Joe Martinek takes a dump off pass 41 yards, still showing that he has it even when bulked up, showing nice speed and agility. Called back due to the center holding that didn't affect the play.

Yes, they do. BYU safety Daniel Sorenson is a talented overall player. Interceptions, pick-six’s, forced fumbles, sacks, countless tackles, fiery leadership, etc. He also seems to have attitude both on and off the field, and judging by his comments regarding white-BYU versus black-Ole Miss, he seems to be as racially aware as a young white NCAA athlete could be.

dwid, I hope you are right about McKay Jacobson. He was highly recruited out of high school and he should still be on the minds of pro scouts (of course we know that isn't a given because he is White). As to how he's been treated by BYU, yes it is a shame. He had a great Freshman year then went on his mission. He hasn't been used nearly as much the last 2 seasons. He had a hamstring injury in '09 and only played/started 9 games that year, otherwise he would have developed into a star no doubt, or at least had a breakout season that year and would have increased his chances of being a star. He knows how White possession receivers are usually treated and talked about by the caste media because we had a conversation about it in '06. :smiley: I wish him the best wherever he ends up!

Daniel only has 2 interceptions this year but a bunch of pass break ups. He had some big hits today that stopped receivers from catching the ball, for some reason they don't go down on the stat sheet. He is still getting the mental part of the game down, he has made some mistakes but has shown great athleticism to cover ground quickly, he's only a sophomore so no doubt he will improve. He should be a top pick when he comes out in a few years. Teams rarely pick a safety in the 1st but he has the ability to be a game changer. Since he lacks the melanin he would probably wind up in the 2nd. Like other White safetys he could be a great cornerback if they put him there.

Yeah hopefully Jacobson can clock a fast 40 at a pro day and catch the eyes of some scouts. Eric Peterman didn't have great production but got a few camp invites after running in the 4.4 range. He might have had a better chance had he chosen a team other than the Bears. Peterman did have a bad habit of catching with his body instead of his hands, but there are tons of black receivers that do this. McKay Jacobson doesn't do that and since he is more aware, hoepfully he knows to avoid the Bears (Peterman, Hass, Forsey, Sharp etc)

My point was that Gannaway outstaged "Mr. Deep Ball." Some people probably think that Baylor "just throws" -- because they have the (faux) supaman who was erroneously given the Heisman.. but that's not true.

BTW, on Gannaway's long run down the left sideline, there was clear holding. A White Baylor player held his man twice, then shoved the Husky to the ground from behind. That run gave Baylor a ton of momentum.

In last night's "Bowl Game" -- I saw LAST YEAR'S version of RG3. He was an absolute JOKE. He's terrified of making mistakes, so it's dink-and-dunk central for him. It was good to see Washington get pressure on him, sack him, strip him, and make him throw some passes that should have been picked off. He also had trouble cleanly catching snaps.

He'll be a reach in the Draft, and I won't give Art Briles credit for that. It's the MSM System that has put a ton of effort into marketing him as the "cool black guy" and "new Mike Vick" that are responsible. They've done the same thing with countless other black quarterbacks..

I am no fotball guru but I only see Devon Wylie and Jeemy Ebert getting drafted from the wr position. The goodnews is that there should be about 6 to 8 players not drafted that will make NFL rosters nxt year.

i find it "strange" that Iowa's true freshman starting tailback, Jordan Canzeri, is somehow plenty big enough to earn a Division I scholarship ... apparently his affleticism allows him to play much bigger than his size, which is generously listed at 5-7, 179-pounds.

"weird," huh? i guess it's that melanin that makes him seem big even when he is actually small ... it's a good thing he isn't White, at least. 'cause then he'd be sitting in the stands or toiling away on the practice squad as a walk-on.

Danny Coale has a good shot to get drafted. Tyler Shoemaker might as well, he is better than the two afflete receivers drafted last year from Boise st in the 2nd and 3rd. Connor Vernon and Cole Beasley have the production, depends on what they run. Then they might have a wildcard like Scott McKnight last year, maybe Aaron Pflugrad.

great game going on right now, Northwestern vs Texas A&M. Ryan Swope already has a big catch and we have Ebert on the other side. Schmidt is the main back so far for Northwestern.

yeah Jimmy Chitwood, If he were White, Jordan Canzeri would be a walk on, of course he would be switched to his appropriate position, slot receiver.

It is a shame to see Swope playing slot receiver. He was a dominant back in Texas. I thought he was right behind Burkhead in terms of ability at rb. He shows nice agility getting yards after the catch. Still can't get some carries after the main back goes out with a shoulder injury. He gets most of his catches by the line of scrimmage and has a runningback number (25).

you make some good points about Swope. as i just posted in another thread, few people are aware that Swope put together the best receiving season in A&M history this season ... even before his bowl game numbers are included. and speaking of his bowl game performance, midway through the second quarter Swope already has 5 catches for 91 yards.

it's a pretty good start for the day. now i just hope Jeremy Ebert puts up some big numbers for Northwestern.

it's a shame that Mike Trumpy got injured this year for the Wildcats. he was playing very well and gave them a dynamic threat out of the backfield. with Persa still not himself, their best running threat is back-up quarterback/wideout Colter.

update: at the half, Swope has 7 catches for 98 yards.

Ebert, though, only has 2 catches for 4 yards. not surprisingly or coincidentally, Northwestern's offense has struggled mightily and is down 13. hopefully, the Wildcats will find a way to get him the ball, and he'll make some big plays. he certainly has the speed and elusiveness to make it happen.

From my understanding of this concept, we are 0-3 in "Caste matchups" in the past 2 days (Does anyone consider BYU over Tulsa a Caste victory?):

Florida State over Notre Dame
Mississippi State over Wake Forest
Oklahoma over Iowa


Normally, I would have no sympathy for Notre Dame, but they truly gave the game away. Florida State also started 4 sumos' on their o-line. That was partly due to injuries (to Whites), but it also emphasizes how FSU was ripe to be defeated.

Tommy Rees was 16-27 for 163 yards, 1 TD and 2 picks. Not a big game, of course, and he may not possess the "big time" gene, but if he just played a little better, ND wins instead of losing by a score of 18-14.

Yesterday, Iowa State lost to Rutgers, but they started black quarterback Barnett.. so I didn't count that game as a Caste-matchup.

I don't put too much stock in the "caste mactchup" thing. Our players have done well. It was JJ DiLuigi who had two good runs to put them in good position at the end, Riley Nelson also made some good plays with his feet. Kariya had some nice plays as well. GJ Kinne played well on the other side, but came up short. Daniel Sorensen was all over the place making big hits, much more defense in that game than in Baylor/Washington. Ryan Swope had a big day for Texas A&M. It could have been a back and forth game but it looked like Persa is still recovering from injuries, he was limping a few times.

Iowa State had a White qb for most of the game but when the black quarterback went out it seemed like the White back went out as well.

Nobody else mentioned it (maybe nobody else watched), but Mike Campanaro had a great game for Wake Forest. Ten catches for 128 yards. He was interfered with on a reception attempt (that wasn't called) that would have been a touchdown. He had good separation all game long and he displayed great hands on bad passes.
Campanaro finishes the season with 73 receptions for 833 yards (2TD). He redshirted as a freshman, so he's got two more years of eligibility left. Further in his favor is the fact that Wake's leading wide(nosed) receiver announced after the game that he's entering the draft in the Spring. Mike should be WR1 next season.

Interesting Preston Lyons only had 39 carries in 12 regular season games...in the Bowl he bust out for 18 carries & 136 yards!

Announcer Joe Tesitore just said "Rex Burkhead is the poster child for everything that is college football"...when refering to his 3.38 GPA + Running ability...

It was said "Ryan Swope has a bright future at the next level" by the announcer...he should be used in a Percy Harvin type role IMO...tailback/reciever tweener'.
