i tried to keep this brief, 'cause there are a LOT of teams. 64, in fact!
Midwest Region
#1 Louisville - no white players see the court. They play great pressure defense, though, and are a legitimate threat to be playing for the whole shebang.
#16 Morehead St - no white players see the court. Despite their "affleticism" they suck. Is there a way both of these teams could lose?
#8 Ohio St - 2 whites get regular minutes and starts. Two-guard Diebler is long, athletic, and can score in bunches when he gets hot. B.J. Mullins is the most athletic 7-footer in the country, but for some reason doesn't get nearly enough burn.
#9 Siena - 6-8 sophomore forward Ryan Rossiter is the only white starter, but he's started all 32 games. Versatile, skilled, and a pretty good athlete, Rossiter can play the 3, 4, or 5. He's the team's leading rebounder and shot blocker, averages 10 ppg, and shoots 63% from the floor. Two athletic white perimeter players come off the bench for Siena, and both average about 10 mpg. Freshmen Kyle Downey is the back-up point guard, and freshman guard/forward Owen Wignot might be the best athlete on the team.
#5 Utah - the Utes routinely start 3 white players, and will often have 4 on the court at a time. This team revolves around 7-2 senior center Luke Nevill. The Mountain West Player of the Year leads the Utes in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. If the Utes can control the tempo and allow Nevill to play his game, they will be hard to beat. Frenchman Kim Tillie is the power forward, and he plays very hard and is a better athlete than given credit for. The duo usually wins the battle of the paint. The weakness of the Utes is in their backcourt. Two blacks and 6-5 point guard Luka Drca all have very poor assist-to-turnover ratios. If the Utah guards can't handle the pressure of the opposing defense, it'll be an early exit for the Utes. Off the bench, 6-8 forward Shaun Greene is a 3-point assassin and causes even more match-up problems for opposing frontlines. However, back-up point guard Tyler Kepkay, who gets a lot of minutes, also struggles with turnovers.
# 12 Arizona - the Wildcats have been a tremendous disappointment. Guard/forward Chase Budinger is one of the most athletic, and best offensive players in the nation and is the only white man who is a significant contributor. However, Arizona is soft. If they let Utah hit 'em in the mouth, they're done.
#4 Wake Forest - despite youth and chemistry problems, Wake has put together a solid year. Only one white man sees action, and he's their best big. Chas McFarland should put up HUGE numbers with his length, toughness, and ability to run the floor. However, not surprisingly, he doesn't get many touches.
#13 Cleveland St - small and black, the misnamed Vikings only have one white man who sees significant minutes. 6-9 center Chris Moore is the equivalent of an offensive lineman, and does little more than set picks and play defense.
#6 West Virginia - remember just a couple of years ago when the Mountaineers were setting the collegiate basketball world on fire with a nearly all-white lineup? Now just one white sees the court. Sharp-shooting combo guard Alex Ruoff is their best player despite having that detrimental skin condition we've all heard about.
#11 Dayton - small and black, their time in the Big Dance should be short. 6-10 center Kurt Huelsman is their only size and only white man. He's the designated banger and little else.
#3 Kansas - one of the big surprises of the season, KU rode the play of overrated Sherron Collins and underrated (athletic white center) Cole Aldrich to the Big 12 regular season title. KU routinely starts 2 white men and often has 3 on the floor, led by Aldrich. Aldrich is a very gifted athlete and led the team in rebounds and blocked shots while being second in scoring and shooting over 60% from the floor. Shooting guard Brady Morningstar is the team's best perimeter defender, and shooting guard Tyrell Reed has the knack for knocking down the big shot.
#14 North Dakota St - one of only two all-white starting fives in the Tourney, the Bison start 4 red-shirt seniors, including Summit League Player of the Year, point guard Ben Woodside. Woodside is a white version of Tony Parker. NDSU is small, and don't have much of a bench, but they are the #2 three-point shooting team in the country, don't turn the ball over very much, and rebound well as a team. They've got their hands full with Aldrich, but if they get hot anything can happen.
#7 Boston College - not only is he the only white starter for BOSTON College, 6-8 forward Joe Trapani might be the most underrated player in the ACC. He leads BC in rebounding and blocked shots, is second in scoring, can guard three positions, and is a scoring threat from anywhere on the floor. Still, the media seems to think negro Tyrese Rice is the only Eagle worthy of mentioning. 6-7 forward Tyler Roche is a superb defender, as well, and is a 3-point specialist. But he doesn't get many touches.
#10 USC - I can't stand USC. The end.
#2 Michigan St - wildly inconsistent performances, injuries, and illness have disrupted the Spartans' season. Still, with excellent coach Tom Izzo on the sidelines, they managed a 2-seed. Goran Suton is the only white starter or significant contributor. A fierce rebounder, Suton didn't have the season many were expecting. Many think MSU is the most vulnerable #2 in the Tourney. But they should breeze through the first round, regardless.
#15 Robert Morris - small and lacking talent. I hope they enjoyed the flight.
West Region
#1 UConn - all black, but good. I hate 'em, but they are talented enough to cut the nets down.
#16 Chattanooga - all black and crappy. They'll be going home about halftime, most likely.
#8 BYU - one of only two all-white starting lineups in the Tournament. Led by do-everything guard/forward Lee Cummard (who should've been an All-American), the Cougars play a very fast-pace style. Cummard leads the team in scoring and blocked shots, is second in rebounds and assists, and is a lock-down defender. Two guard Jimmer Fredette and power forward Jonathan Tavernari are both sweet shooters, center Chris Miles is an above-average athlete, and Jackson Emery is a pass-first point guard who rarely turns the ball over
and plays tremendous defense. BYU doesn't have much of a bench, though. If they play their game, they could surprise the world and make a run. But that's a big IF.
#9 Texas A&M - who cares? They're playing against an all-white team. So I hope the Aggies get blown out!
#5 Purdue - the Boilermakers have two of my favorite players in sophomore Robbie Hummel and junior Chris Kramer, and they seem to be playing their best basketball. Hummel is a do-everything point forward who has battled back spasms this year. Kramer is one of the Top Five defensive players in the country from his guard spot. Purdue often has 3 whites on the court at a time, including awkward but effective power forward Nemanja Calasan.
#12 Northern Iowa - 4 white starters don't overcome their limitations. Small outside of their starting center, who is out of shape, and with a narrow margin of error, Northern Iowa has to slow the game down and out-execute the more talented, and much longer Boilermakers if they're going to have a chance.
#4 Washington - a nearly all-black roster can't dim the shining light that is Jon Brockman. The Luke Harangody of the West Coast, Brockman is by far Washington's best player, but is still virtually invisible on the national media's radar.
#13 Mississippi St - peaking at the right time, the all-black Bulldogs tore through the SEC Tourney after erratic play during the season. Shot blocker extraordinaire Jarvis Vanardo is the player to watch in his match-up with Brockman.
#6 Marquette - the all-black Golden Eagles will attempt to run the Aggies off the court.
#11 Utah St - led by WAC Player of the Year, 6-9 240-pound power forward Gary Wilkinson, the Aggies will need to control the tempo and cut down on their turnovers. If they do, Marquette has no answer inside.
#3 Missouri - the only white starter is designated 3-point sniper Matt Lawrence. The incredibly athletic Justin Safford gets less than 10 mpg. The Tigers like to run, and press, then run faster and press harder. Their whole game is predicated on forcing the tempo and forcing turnovers.
#14 Cornell - I've not seen them play. I know nothing about the Ivy League Tournament Champs.
#7 California - really struggled down the stretch. Their all-black starting five is poised for an early exit, in my opinion.
#10 Maryland - really surging late in the year. Led by emotional combo guard Grievis Vasquez (from Venezuela), the Terrapins are a dangerous team. White combo guard Eric Hayes is also a terrific all-around player who played his best basketball during the ACC Tourney. Hayes doesn't start often, but he always plays starter's minutes. Dave Neal is your classic white player. He's strong as an ox, rebounds, defends, and shoots very well, but can't jump. So, of course, the media love to ridicule him. He's a heck of a player, though. And they can suck it!
#2 Memphis - I hate, hate, hate Memphis and their coach John Calipari. I hope they die in a fiery crash. That being said, they have a good, aggressive, pressing team. And if they don't engage in TNB, they have a chance at a deep Tourney run.
#15 Cal St-Northridge - only one white starter for this first-round blowout-waiting-to-happen.
i'll try and get the other two regions up tomorrow before the action starts.
