Introducing another linebacker that led his team in tackles last season... Audie Cole -- http://www.gopack.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=9200&ATCLID=1146051

From an article:

Although Cole played some linebacker in high school -- plus basketball and baseball -- switching strictly to defense in the faster, rougher college game was a major transition.

So he redshirted in 2007, competed primarily on special teams in '08, then earned a starting job last year. Avoiding the injuries that felled several of his teammates, a healthy Cole led the Wolfpack in tackles with 85.

With lengthy, ruffled blond hair atop a muscular 6-5, 239-frame, Cole has that rugged look of a hunter, fisherman and linebacker, all of which he is. He also possesses a penchant for popping. With that aggressive mentality and more seasoning, he should do a lot more his final two seasons.

Right now, I'm planning to use this thread for the 2010 season, and then it can rest in peace.

A year ago I was hoping to be able to follow this guy's season for Oklahoma. But a torn acl forced him to redshirt his freshman season. However, it looks like Tom Wort is completely healed and will compete for the starting MLB position this Fall for the Sooners.
Article about Wort at Oklahoma

He's a really big hitter.

I was wondering about Austin Box' situation, so thanks to your article, I now have some info.

I just hope that either Wort or Box beats out the afflete and takes the MLB spot.

Very nice. And I'll bet that they were the best ballcarriers in their leagues, yet they are just put on defense while some scrub black RB from "down-the-road" high school, who struggled to gain half as many yards against the same defenses is given a D1 scholarship to play RB because they "look better" running the ball, and have "tremendous upside".

Agreed, its irritating when white high school running back are forced to change positions, but linebacker is so much better than the dreaded fullback, I just cringe when I hear that happening. Linebacker is at least a great position from which white athletes can shine, and show off multiple talents, tackling, chasing the QB, interceptions etc..

I sure hope so, because, barring several unfortunate injuries, we should dominate again. If they get an opportunity, several new athletes should come out of the woodwork as well.

The ACC seems to have a few more White studs at linebacker these days, and it's known as a "speed" conference, so that's something to look forward to. If some of our athletes continue to dominate the ACC, what will the NFLs excuse be? That's why we need to document what could be a historic year for our linebackers, particularly in the ACC.

--Keith Brooking dominated at Georgia Tech, and he has done very well in the NFL.

**There probably had to be a few other productive White LBs in that "era" -- but I can't really think of any. I watched quite a bit of NFL drafts as well, and, sure, the ACC was already dark on defense in that time. Florida State tended to have their all-black defenses, as well as North Carolina, NC State and Clemson. I honestly don't have recollections of Virginia, Wake Forest, Duke and Maryland. Boston College, of course, wasn't in the conference at that time.

When Dan Morgan dominated at Miami U, they were in the Big East at the time. Same with Virginia Tech, and they are another team that tended to be all-black.**

If anyone knows of some other productive White LBs (in the ACC) during the past 10-20 years -- I would like to hear about them. I have no doubt that the pickings were very slim....

I'm not as much of an expert on defense as I am about offense (I'm especially a text book of knowledge about RBs and WRs...and also QBs and TEs to a lesser extent). I'm a big fan of Kansas's Huldon Tharp though. This kid was a star LB "AND" RB in H.S. He tore up his knee his senior year, but if he still has the same mobility he could be one of the most athletic LBs in the entire FBS!

Ross Homan, out of Ohio State is another white tackling machine at LB. Last year, he had 108 tackles, including 57 solo stops. He also had two sacks, and 5 picks.

Lutrus can really run. when i first saw him play in 2007, i recall the announcers talking repeatedly about his speed ... apparently at that time, he was in the mixfor the fastest UConn player on the roster.

oh, and he was a dominant running back in high school but wasn't recruited by anyone as a tailback. no surprise there.

I think that Lutrus is going to need to have a very big Senior season or the NFL will totally ignore him, and act as if UCONN is some "backwater" program in some "weak" conference... while, at the same time, several affletes have been drafted from there in recent years.

The ole double standard and MO of the Caste System...

just read this blurb somewhere, about impact players on every college team, guess who's Oklahoma's?

- Oklahoma LB Tom Wort has super speed (sub-4.5) for the position. His much-anticipated arrival in Norman was cut short due to a knee injury in August preseason.

Steve Greer is a freshman (RS I believe), and he's leading the Virginia Cavaliers' in tackles for the season. I really had very little reason to watch quotabacked Virginia this season, so I didn't even know about this linebacker!

Yeah, BC played Virginia the other week, but none of my TV channels were showing it.

I saw a depth-chart where he was listed behind a black Junior (Taliaferro)...

He led Virginia with 92 tackles as a RS Frosh. If he doesn't start, that would be another notch against a black head coach.

EDIT: It's the post-Spring depth-chart on the Virginia website. It says Taliaferro or Steve Greer at MLB, and it will probably be the brutha I bet.

This guy is an absolute player. He was twice an all state LB in Ohio leading his team to the playoffs both years. If it wasn't for LB Luke Luchy from BC this kid would have been the ACC Freshman player of the year! Led UVA in tackles as a Redshirt FR. last yr.

Irritating how a player can lead the team in tackles..but a so-called expert comes up with the excuse he's not enough of a playmaker?? Baffling! But Greer is a projected starter in my pre-season book!

Looking forward to some slobber-knockers from Oklahoma's Tom Wort...nice pics BTW! Won't post pic of Ohio State's leading tackler Ross Homan since it's just above^

Looking forward to seeing Mark Herzlich healthy and back in action wreckin' havoc after missing last season fighting off cancer!! Hopefully it's a full recovery! The 08' ACC Defensive Player of the Year was projected to be one of the Top Picks in last years NFL Draft...Herzlich & Kuechly on the field together will be devastating! Some Week 1 stats..

Luke Kuechly, BC -- 11 tackles

Tanner Brock, TCU -- 6 tackles

Casey Matthews, Oregon -- 3 tackles & an INT (limited tackles cuz they torched New Mexico.)

Tom Wort, Oklahoma -- 7 tackles (but only 1 solo tackle)

Mark Herzlich, BC -- 5 tackles

When teams play more competitive opponents, these stats will be higher!
