The current print issue of The Sporting News has an article in which 14 college football coaches are asked to name "the best high school player I ever saw."
Not surprisingly, only 3of the 13 players picked are white. They are Drew Bledsoe (picked by Mike Price of UTEP), Bill Fralic (picked by both Mike Sherman of Texas A&M and Bill Stewart of WVU), and Wes Welker (by Mike Leach of Texas Tech).
Of the 13 players, all were heavily recruited, except one. Wes Welker, the greatest high school football player Mike Leach ever saw ("He could do so many things," says Leach. "He could play offense, he could play defense, and I saw him kick a 52-yard field goal to win a game") still had to walk-on at Texas Tech. Even if you're one of the best high school players ever, if you're white and you play WR, RB or most defensive positions, you still will not get a scholarship offer from a major program.
