Nice article by Samuel Chi up at Breitbart News. There is a graph from four years ago that illustrates sports that are popular for Democrats and or Republicans. Tennis, European Soccer and NBA fans were more Democrat while Auto Racing, NHL , College Football and Golf fans were more likely to be Republicans. Most of the other major sports landed somewhere near the middle or just a touch to the Republican ledger. Obviously this is not a straight line thing as most all sports are enjoyed by people from all over the political spectrum but it does emphasize which sports are favored by "conservatives" and which sports are favored by "liberals" in a general sense. Chi correctly believes that the NBA fan base has shifted even more left since this graph was put up four years ago.
The NBA which ESPN is heavily invested in, is experiencing some problems similar to the downward spiral the NFL found itself in during the first half of their season. ESPN coverage of the NBA this season is down 5 % and TNT is down 8%. Even more problematic are the local station ratings. 15 NBA teams had double digit losses on their local TV ratings and across the 30 teams ratings were down a whopping 14% across 30 markets. To summarize that isn't good.
Chi sites several political moments that probably turned away some fans like the Donald Sterling incident where a private conversation was used against him. High profile players like Lebron and Curry and several Head Coaches coming out against Donald Trump are cited as well.
But what is not mentioned is what I think is the main reason the NBA is faltering. Mediocre product to a degree is hurting the league but mainly the LACK OF WHITE STARS is the REAL PROBLEM. And I am not just talking about filling up the rosters with a few more white guys. No I am talking about having several top flight white stars dot the NBA landscape. And the sport needs to present itself so white folks are not turned off by it too. If they can't or don't address the lack of whites issue then I suspect the NBA will continue to suffer. ESPN has decided to put most of their muscle behind this league but if the NBA keeps losing fans this whole set up could get ugly real fast. In fact it already has started to get ugly.

According to Breitbart the ESPN and TNT were down 17% this past season. Not sure how accurate those numbers are because other sources has the 4 networks, ESPN, ABC, TNT and NBA down around 9%. No matter the bottom line is the NBA like the NFL, which was also down 8% last season, showed major signs of slippage. Mike Golic has falsely been saying the NBA numbers are great but he is such a jerk it is not worth discussing. Obviously the Anthem
politics of the NFL was part of the problem but in my estimation the NFL started to show signs of life in the latter part of the season and a "white friendly" team like the Patriots winning the SB in such a spectacular fashion along with signs (small as they are) that whites will play a larger role in glory positions like RB and WR, indicates the NFL should bounce back nicely this year.
The NBA's future is on less solid footing. The local numbers in some markets, not reflected in the numbers above, were downright ugly.
And Disney is up to their neck in a long ultra expensive deal with the NBA so don't think some big boys are not getting nervous.
The stacking of teams like the Warriors is starting to backfire and the general lack of competition has dulled everything down. Secondarily, any sort of significant white presence is at what seems like an all time low. So this off season it appears the NBA is taking some steps to address these issues but it doesn't look like they have done enough to stop the leaking. Some teams have made a few bold moves and the big market Celtics nabbing the best young white player Hayward kind of indicates to me the NBA is aware of the two fold problem of lack of competitive play and ( the unsaid ) lack of white stars.
Which means the white factor should start to improve and lets hope that does happen and that it is expanded as time moves on. And if that does happen expect the NBA numbers to perk up.

I lost a lot of interest in the NBA mostly because the quality of the play is usually trash.

I like to look at old NBA games from the 1980s and into the 1990s. I enjoy watching a team like the Celtics or Jazz which has a conspicuously high number of Whites relative to other teams, but I even enjoyed looking at a heavily Black team such as the Pistons. Quality is quality and I like to give credit where credit is due. Even a dirty team like the 80s early 90s Pistons still had a lot of fundamental, White-style skill on display, which made it tolerable to watch.

I'd find short-springting tolerable even if it's mostly Black if the idea of all the athletes being drug cheats wasn't so obvious. If there were no drug cheats and Whites were actually recruited and encouraged to take up sprinting I'm sure Whites would be more prevalent in American sprinting. Track seems to be unpopular compared to how it was in the 60s to 80s. Watching the middle distances, such as the 800 meter and 1500 meter and mile, are more watchable because there's usually a fair number of White guys who have a realistic chance of winning.

But back to the NBA, even if it were all Black I'd still tune in once in a while if I was seeing some amazing play, but it's SUCH crap!

NFL is the same way. The Whiter the team, the better it is, so it's no surprise the worst teams are Black as night.

1994 was the last year for me. After that it just became a tattooed, thug-ridden league and I dropped it like a hot potato. There were moments in the early-to-mid 2000's when there was an unusually large influx of Euros so I started watching it again at least occasionally. Then there was another increase in my viewership when the Timberwolves a few years back were starting (gulp) five White players and I was hoping again more recently with the Bulls draft a few years ago, but that never came into fruition so I never watched it again.

Unfortunately NBA is by far the most popular US sport here in Australia - it's seen as the "cool" "hip" and "trendy" thing to follow, and Australians have been doing alright recently (Bogut, Dellevedova, Mills, Baynes etc). NFL and MLB have mild followings, while NHL has next to no presence here. Luckily 99% of the NBA support is very shallow, as we don't get games on free-to-air TV and it's not well publicised on pay-TV. Hopefully it dies off soon, just the latest trend.

The domestic league (NBL) has reasonable success on par with our soccer league, vast majority are white players with some imports (who are obviously massively hyped up).

We didn't notice the slippage of quality in Chicago because of the winning but in the end he brought the one on one show to the game and the thugs took it from there. In poorer cities like Atlanta, Memphis and Washington which is was extremely poor but hedge fund led real estate companies are taking back the city block by block, you actually see what you mention as the audience is much higher than 12 percent of Black fans. This is league that promotes to social media followers and makes free agent signings of top stars monumental news announcements. Contrast this with the NHL or the MLB where the signings are big news but aren't discussed with bated breathe like a formal impeachment of the president. Who can forget this..

Why are NBA players so PLEASED these days? It strikes me that if you go back a bit white stars like Dirk, Ginobli and Steve Nash were routinely leading top playoff teams. Those days seem like a distant memory. Going into the season the possibility existed that Gordon Hayward would be a part of a contender but he got wiped out by a dirty hit from Lebron James barely into the first game of the season.

There are other young white "stars" like Porzingis and Jokic but they play for teams that are not ready for the playoffs let alone title contenders.

Think of the NBA like a movie where the main actors are black and the supporting roles are black and white.

As teams like Golden State and other teams in the west consolidate their power it looks as if the current black/white layout will remain in place. Sure there are white players entering the league and while many are scrubs some get significant minutes. But it has become obvious to me that the poster children for the NBA and the winning teams are almost entirely black. And the "black control" of the league has never been stronger. It is like they have a death grip on the NBA and no white players will be allowed to truly emerge ever again.

And I suspect if that trend was to change and a white winning superstar or two started to emerge all of a sudden a labor dispute would rear it's ugly head.

This story crows about what we are talking about, I really don't have a problem with James leaving Cleveland for LA but when he left for Miami 8 years ago he all but did a cartel type conspiracy with Bosch to formulate a sign a trade deal. The league is well on it's path to becoming a black plaything the very thing I have discussed this past season. Star black players who essentially multi task as political figures, management and quasi-ownership. The bottom line is they are able to wield their power in a way that shapes the league in terms of who will win and who will lose.

Adam Silver is all too happy to oblige because he figures by giving the black players unprecedented power it decreases the chances of labor disputes down the road.

Black coaches have become the norm now and as this strange transition takes place one wonders where the white players stands amidst the changes? Apart form Kevin Love a clear "second" wheel to King James this past season, there has been scant white presence on teams battling for the championship the past four seasons. There are a few white stars (Porzingis, Hayward to name two) but no white superstars in the NBA today and from the looks of it none will be arriving in the foreseeable future either unless a surprise springs up.

As the black power continues to consolidate and expand will the white NBA player become little more than wallpaper? Is there a correlation between the two? With blacks having more power than ever are white players being frozen out? This possibility fuels my paranoia.

I think there is concern on the outside about the standing of the "white player" in the league today but there doesn't seem to be anything in place to remedy the problem. It is exceedingly rare to see white high school porspects near the top of their classes these days. Typically there might be two or three in the top 50 if that. This past draft was an exception more than the rule.

My main concern is yes there aren't enough white players in the NBA but more importantly there are not enough important white players that can break free of the wallpaper tag. In other words it is better to have several superstar white players than a bunch of white scrubs.



Dirk and Steve Nash are the last true white stars ( Ginobli too perhaps) but one does wonder in worry if they will be the last. I think in general the public and us here at caste are hoping that is not the case. Far from it. I think it would be bad for the league and slowly but surely drive away more and more white fans.

I wrote the NBA off years ago and will never go back. Growing up near Seattle I liked the supersonics when I was a kid and loved it when Detlef Schrempf was one of their mainstays. Wouldn't go to a Lakers game these days if someone handed me tickets and a 100 dollar bill! I don't have any numbers to back myself up, but the decline of the NBA seems pretty apparent to me outside the black community.
