Hmm, using that many QBs has got to be frustrating for the coaches and players. With the way they have been coached thus far, I don't see many positive changes happening this season. Too bad for Sam, but at least he still has two more years!

If Rice is going to be letting QB's of this caliber (low) play they should try using McGuffie at QB to run this kind of offense. If Sam is even remotely accurate throwing the ball, next year he could be a dominant option QB, similar to a Eric Crouch or Scott Frost. The least Rice can do is let Sam run the wildcat some...

I think Eddington probably has a pretty good head on his shoulders though if he goes to Rice, they are pretty strong academically. Hopefully he starts to figure it out or Rice better find a viable option next year to help Sam! Sam will have two more years after this to get exposure and increase his average production- or he might wind up like Jake Sharp if he has a let down his final year.

Guff has loads of talent hopefully this team figures out how to win!

On real, white paper, Rice has good talent, position by position. If you compare tackle for tackle, guard for guard, DE for DE, to say, Auburn, Rice could/should be much better than they are. Perhaps the coaching staff has a '60s VW van out in the parking lot that they all pile into and smoke reefer all week in. The plays, schemes and positioning is from a stoner's nightmare. After watching 5 games or so, I have no idea what they are trying to accomplish on defense. The offense is advanced by comparison. If Sam has to endure this same type of leadership for his remaining two years, he will be able to join Jake Sharp at youth camps.

Yeah but the main thing here is that Sam does have TWO years remaining. A lot can change in 2 years just look at Toby Gerhart's Stanford career. His first two seasons the team stunk, his stats were average, and in no way did he look like a future Heisman Trophy Finalist. Sam will only be getting bigger, faster, and stronger in these next 2 years and I expect great results from the young man.

Sam isn't being used enough in the East Carolina game, but he has 8 carries for 87 yards and a 13 yard catch at halftime.

He has an outside shot at hitting 1,000 yards on the year with this game plus 1 more left. Zach Line of SMU, who I think is our best nfl prospect, just went over 1,000 yards for the year a couple minutes ago.

Sam is over 100 yards rushing now, with a TD, plus he has 2 catches for 77 yards including a 64 yard TD catch and run.

Sam finished with 15 rushes for 114 yards (7.6 ypc) and 1 TD. Sam also had 3 receptions for 83 yards (27.7 ypc) and another TD to help Rice win their 3rd game of the year!

The Rice coaches are really just figuring out how to best use Sam. They do know he is the focal point of our offense and will be until he is gone. They want to use plays and sets where Sam isn't mobbed at the line of scrimmage every play and the offense used against ECU yesterday was a great start to that. Nobody wants to see Sam get 35 carries and 100 yards a game. We want to see him get 20 carries and 150 yards along with 6 or 8 receptions for another 100.

Yes. He was the starter at the beginning of the season but was injured in the second game. He tried to come back a few weeks later and reinjured his shoulder. He now has a clean bill of health and will be the non-wildcat QB as long as he is healthy.

1267 yards from scrimmage and 9 total touchdowns, 4 plays over 40 yards, 6 over 20. Only can go up from here. Maybe they can find a system that doesn't involve 4 differnet guys taking direct snaps. The playcalling has got to get better. Right now he looks like a better version of Reggie Bush, yes Bush had better production in college but was surrounded by more talent and better playcalling. He does his best running from traditional running plays but they keep running the spread stuff, which isn't bad, but they call a offense like Rice a grab bag offense. JUst a bunch of different concepts on offense with no real identity on offense. You find something that works and stick with it, not mix things up like they do.

Per the Houston Chronicle's Joseph Duarte:

Running back Sam McGuffie, the team's leading rusher last season, was kept out for most of Saturday's season opener as a precaution because of a nagging leg injury.

McGuffie had one carry for four yards and also completed a 15-yard pass, both coming on the Owls' first possession of the second quarter.
Rice coach David Bailiff said he made the decision to limit McGuffie after watching him in pre-game warm-ups. After the game, McGuffie was wearing a brace on his right leg.
"We looked at the big picture and didn't want to get him hurt for the rest of the season," said Bailiff, who expects McGuffie to be ready for Saturday's home opener against Purdue.
Chris Boswell's three field goals in the game moved him into a tie with Darrell Richardson (1991-92) for eighth on the Rice career list with 14.


I guess thats good news, hopefully it isn't anything serious and can bounce back with a great season. I was worried that he got demoted.

i stumbled across this complimentary article about Sam today, and thought i'd post it. hopefully, he's healthy for the game this Saturday against Purdue.

Don't expect a smile to replace that intense look on Sam McGuffie's face on Saturdays this football season.
But believe it or not, the junior running back is more comfortable than ever as he enters his second season as Rice's most dangerous and versatile offensive weapon.

"I'm a lot more confident in what we are doing," McGuffie said as Rice prepares to open the season Saturday at Texas. "Last year I was going crazy; I didn't know this and that. I took this offseason to mature myself and learn to just do everything a little better."

The hesitation last season was the result of a 20-month layoff after the former Cy-Fair High School star transferred from Michigan, where he played one season. Because of NCAA transfer rules, McGuffie had to sit out the 2009 season.

"It took awhile," McGuffie said. "I felt like a freshman again. Now that I'm older and more mature, I know how to go about things and know what to expect of myself."

McGuffie carried the offensive load for most of last season, leading the Owls in rushing (883 yards) and receptions (39 for 384 yards) and totaling nine touchdowns. It wasn't until early November, following a 178-yard rushing performance against Tulsa, that McGuffie said he felt comfortable in his role.

"He felt the weight of the city of Houston on his shoulders after trans-ferring from Michigan, and everybody had such high expectations," Rice coach David Bailiff said. "He really pressed and did some things as the season went on he worked his way out."

Bailiff said he had "long talks" with McGuffie throughout the season about the pressure he put on himself.

"When you press, nothing good happens," Bailiff said. "I think Sam now is just having fun."

With the return of a veteran offense - and the emergence of Jeremy Eddington and Turner Petersen in the Wild Owl package - McGuffie is not expected to have to carry a majority of the load. If anything, the Owls envision using the explosive McGuffie in a variety of ways, including as a slot receiver.

"Sam is a guy who can change a game in a heartbeat," Rice quarterback Taylor McHargue said. "With a year under his belt, he understands what we are trying to do and understands how he fits in the system. We are looking for him to have a big year."

McGuffie said he is ready to contribute in whatever role needed.

"I know what I bring to the table," he said. "The pressure is just as much as I make it, I guess. I know I have to make plays. Whatever they ask me, I'm going to do as hard as I can."

Take Off Those Shackles. Sam McGuffie, thou hast been loosened. Perhaps now that he has been freed from the leg brace that appeared to hinder both his confidence and his ability to make decisive cuts, McGuffie can return to being the factor back everyone anticipated he'd be this season. The Owls will always utilize McGuffie as a tailback, but with improving health comes the opportunity to witness McGuffie in the slot and on kickoff returns. With junior return specialist Charles Ross (hamstring) sidelined, McGuffie should quickly step in and make an immediate impact.

Why would you post this article when Sam had 1 run for 5 yards? Clearly he is not NFl material. Sad but true.

Did you bother to read the article? he is obviously still bothered by his leg injury. Just because his brace is off doesn't mean he is 100 percent. Sam is an elite talent and had 1200 yards from scrimmage last year and 9 tds, you are ready to write him off after a few bad games when he has been dealing with an injury? He has one year of eligibility after this season. Btw only 2 other players had close to 880 yards rushing last year and 380 yards receiving, one was JJ DiLuigi.

had he kept his average up with more carries that would have been a good game. 1 carry indicates he was not fully healthy.

If you look at other elite backs with his skillset, they didn't put it all together until their final season, Chris Johnson didn't do crap his first few seasons in college.
