I think they have to divert attention away from mcguffie sometimes. Otherwise the defense will just have to focus on stopping him and no one else. But yeah .4 ypc is pretty sh*tty.

Unfortunately, Rice has a problem at QB. Fanuzzi is the returning starter, but makes a lot of bad decisions. Taylor McHargue is a good runner, but stays injured. Taylor Cook has all of the tools to be a top flight QB, but hasn't been given a chance to develop. The QB turmoil has made the offense ineffective.
I was at the Texas/Rice game and one criticism I have of McGuffie is that he needs to be more patient. Most of the time, he would run up into the line too quickly, before the holes would open up. If, after he was given the ball, he would wait a little, the hole would open up and he could use his incredible acceleration and burst through the hole. IMO, Travis Jervey had the same problem at Green Bay. He was so fast that he hit the hole too soon. Hopefully, Sam will learn this lesson to become a top flight RB.

Sam is currently just outside of the top 100 rushers in the FBS, by yardage. Rice doesn't have a lot to work with on offense to improve Sam's performance, but I hope they can find some way to be more successful as a unit and improve Sam's numbers in the process. I'd like to see him in the top 50 by season's end, but that might be wishful thinking.

He still has plenty of time to impress NFL scouts. If McGuffie get's screwed by the NFL I will never watch another game again. Rice is currently 1-4 and their only win is a very close game over North Texas. The offensive line needs a serious overhaul for McGuffie to be able to showcase his skills.
The great thing about McGuffie at Rice is that he is getting the black running back treatment. He is getting carries and being allowed to develop as a running back. They are making a conscious effort to make him the feature of the offense. Rice is not in a win now pressure cooker with a huge alumni base of dwfs screaming for more affletes. Sam has the tools, he just needs coaching and experience.

Sam McGuffie finished with 18 rushes for 81 yards (respectable average) and 3 receptions for 20 yards, in another one sided loss for Rice. I hope Rice can get better so Sam can put up the numbers he's capable of in the next 2 years. It's hard to put up good rushing stats with a terrible line and always behind forcing a team to pass...

Until the legacy sports media is wiped out and replaced with entities that report fairly, this will always be the case. The bulk of White American football fans believe that Water=Wet and Black=Runningback.
Do not worry about Sam getting less carries as a result of any punishments for mistakes. Coach Bailiff has repeatedly reiterated the need to get the ball into Sam's hands. Sam reminds me of an Indy car in rush hour traffic. Plenty of speed and horsepower, but no room to go. Everyone close to the program knows it is just a matter of time until he breaks out big. We all know our O-line and play selectionis subpar at the moment and it is hampering Sam's stats. The good news is that help is on the way. He runs in the 4.45-4.5 range. Completely different type of runner than McGuffie, but a great compliment if they ever see the field at the same time. Yes, most of us are VERY disappointed in our OC's playcalling thus far)
Rice also has a TE named Vance McDonald (Soph)that they don't use nearly enough. Want to know his style and measurables? Think Jason Witten with 4.5 speed and a little taller.
Also Scott Soloman(Sr. DE)is was injured before the season and should be getting another year.

Seems Rice is a little different than most in that almost ALL of the players that the fans are screaming to see more of are not affletes. In fact, the offensive 6-pack most would like to see on the field consists of Petersen (non-afflete) at RB, McGuffie in the slot, McDonald (n-a) at TE, and Kubiak (n-a, son of Texans Coach) at WR. True freshman Eddington at QB and RsFr Donte Moore at the other WR.

McGuffie had 19 carries for 63 yards and 1 reception for 24 yards in a 34-31 win for Rice over Houston.

Another thing that I found quite interesting. Sam's dad told me directly that there never was 3 concussions. He did have one concussion though. He told me thatRich Rodriguezknew Sam was going to be leaving Michigan after the season was over. Sam was Michigan's leading rusher at the time and RR knew how bad it would look for his program if his leading rusher transferred. He made up the concussion stories and benched Sam so that he would be passed up as the leading rusher by someone else. Sam's dad was noticeably disgusted with the whole situation and is not a fan of RR's.
Good thing is though, now Sam is at Rice where he is 110% appreciated and is happy. I know the stats don't always reflect everything, but most of you will be happy to know that Sam is still quite the electric RB he has always been. He wows the crowd at every game with some athleticly freakish feat. He has just been bottled up with our O-line underperforming lately, but you can still see he is like a Ferrari in rush hour traffic. All kinds of speed and horsepower but no place to go. He will break out sooner or later and put up the stats that should accompany his immense talent.

I like the fact that Sam is in a better place at Rice but what if they don't upgrade their offensive line by next season. If his stats don't get better he may get shunned by the NFL and that will be the end of it.

OutlawOwl, thanks for the "insider info" on Sam, I appreciate it. Unlike many opinions I've seen, I'm not worried about McGuffie and his lack of opportunity this year. I look at this year as his first true year playing college ball, and playing on a rebuilding team at that. Talent is talent. As the Owls get better, and they've gotten better this year from week to week, Sam will get the opportunity to show his talent, even in THAT offensive system.

I hate to say this but my guess is that the NFL will want Sam McGuffie to play WR.
I don't think he'll ever get a legitimate chance at RB in the NFL, regardless of how well our handful of NFL RBs do the rest of this year and the next.

I think I may have come down a little too hard on Sam. There is no doubting his athleticism, I just don't see him as an every down runner. His best shot at going pro would to just be a jack of all trades. Return kicks, line up in the slot, run wildcat with him, and passes and runs out of the backfield and so on. I believe he still has 2 years elgibility left, so hopefully Rice can land some linemen and take a step as a program before Sam's time there is over.

Honestly what's the difference between Sam and Danny Woodhead? Both are super athletic with homerun speed. I know Woodhead is getting a very lucky chance by New England being so fair to him, but still...Van_Slyke_CF said:
Plus, if McGuffie comes in at WR he could be a DeSean Jackson type playmaker (without the attitude). He clearly can catch the ball well.

McGuffie ran for 65 yards on 16 attempts (4.1 ypc)and had 4 receptions for 21 yards (5.3 ypc) and a TD against UCF.

Sam the man McGuffie finally had that huge game we havebeen waiting for. He ran 28 times for 178 yards! Phenomenal Game. It sucks though that it came in another huge loss for Rice. They are one of the worst teams in all of Division IA Football. If he had more talent around him, you would see Sam making more of an impact. Either way it was an epic game by a stud running back. The good news is that he still has 2 years of eligibility left as he is only a sophmore. I sure hope Rice can field a better football team in the next couple of year. Congrats to McGuffie on a huge game!

Sam finished with 15 rushes for 70 yards and a TD with 2 receptions for 12 yards. Afflete Jeremy Eddington had 14 rushes for 104 yards and a TD for Rice. I don't know much about this freshman but I hope he's not going to be splitting carries with Sam the rest of the year and next year too...

Eddington was taking snaps at quarterback, running the option, and part of the reason why Sam didn't have many touches, plenty of times he should have handed it off and Sam would have had a huge hole to run through, he wound up keeping himself and trying to fight through several defenders like some sort of hero. He couldn't throw the ball though, the few pass plays he looked lost and ran, only threw one for 1 yard and even that was off target and the receiver had to adjust. If he could actually run the option correctly it would benefit Sam.
Whatever happens, Rice needs to find an identity on offense, I hate when teams switch quarterbacks up. They need to stick with one thing so things can get into a rhythm. Either Eddington needs to learn to pass or just let one of the other qbs run once in a while. One of the white quarterbacks looked like he could run well. So yeah, Im pretty sure they want to use him as some sort of dual threat qb. He was a quarterback in high school. He lined up at quarterback in another game I saw them play, but didn't attempt any passes, so I guess some type of wildcat formation for right now, where he is running option and zone read stuff, usually with McGuffie lined up next to him. There was rarely a time when Sam wasn't on the field. When they got the other back in they had two backs lined up on either side of Eddington, and other times Sam would motion to the slot.
