Thanks for compliments. ill keep ac/dc in mind hehe, I was looking for something rough even though i know hes not a power runner. Im sick of dumbasses saying he doesnt have the size to be a runningback. If his frame were any bigger hed be labeled an undersized fullback. He's 5'11 and 185, he'll only add muscle to that frame since he just came out of high school so theres no way people can say he is too small at 5'11 to be a runningback. And since you cant make him a fb the only way to get him from playing rb is to make him a slot receiver which i hope Rice doesnt try to do.

headstrong, thats the song in that tom zbikowski vid right?

Its a great video full of wonderful highlights but THE MUSIC MUST BE CHANGED. LOL. Seriously though AC/DC's new album has got some hot tracks off of it you might want to try.

I loved the highlights but I agree the music is tough to swallow. You can tell how talented Guff is in the highlight (very well put together). His YPC was brought down a lot in the first two games (Utah and Wisconsin) when they basically threw him to the wolves with an unready o-line.

Sam is a true white scat-back. He is absolutely amazing in space. He has already dropped down to 19th overall ranked by NFLdraftscout with his transfer to Rice; which is upsetting to me. Sam was ranked as high as 5th before by their service. There are few guys I have seen juke better in space than Sam and I mean "EVER" and I have watched football a long time. Only Gale Sayers, Barry Sanders and Marshall Faulk and currently maybe DeAngelo Williams come to mind.

Guff still has the talent. I have a feeling he will fall off of people's minds for a while but will BURST on to the scene in 2010!

tough j riggins, i know you are an expert on runningbacks. Well seem to be very knowledgeable about the different styles and types of runningbacks. What would you classify Mcguffie as? i know a scat back but who would you compare his style too? The people u mentioned above or someone different?

but the main thing i was wondering, is if you, or anyone else noticed sometimes he kind of wobbles his left arm or whichever arm doesnt have the football. Does anyone know why he does this and if it has any benefit? and if there are any other rb's who do the same thing. I thought maybe it helped him change directions quicker, but i dont know. Its noticeable on some of the runs in the video. If it aint broke dont fix it, but im just curious to know.Edited by: dwid

Sorry for the long post, but you wanted my full analysis dwid.

I'd compare McGuffie's style to Reggie Bush (slightly less top end speed, slightly more burst; "potential" for more power). Other guys he might compare to are Darren McFadden ("currently" less power, but with a better burst). Joe McKnight is another great example of how Sam would compare; maybe the best example. Sam's that type of body type and all those other guys went/are going through the process of adding 10 or 15 pounds or so in college.

The other runner from Michigan, Michael Shaw, is similar too and I was also very impressed with him. The area that Sam is a cut above the rest from all these guys though is how fast he reaches top speed. He makes his first cut from the backfield and then just like that he accelerates to the hole and past the tackler.

Rex Burkhead has nearly equal agility to Sam; I was very impressed with his agility, but doesn't have as much burst or speed. Luckily for Rex he fights for yards like a junk yard dog and he could be an elite runner in college also. Mike Trumpy of this year is also the cream of the crop in elusiveness (not quite as agile as Sam, but slightly better power), but he also doesn't have the "burst" of Sam.

Brandon Wegher's agility is good, but definitely not quite at the level of Sam or the guys in the first paragraph. Wegher's one of those guys who is "very good at everything", but doesn't blow you away in any one particular running style attribute. Wegher is a "very good prospect" though when you consider how balanced he is overall as a runner and top 5 for this year IMO.

But dwid, Sam is definitely a Scat back. He cuts and hits the hole like lightning when he sees it, but he can really make guys miss in the second level when he gets his wheels going. He barely slows down at all to make his cuts in the open field.

Sam is a mix of darting and slashing styles IMO. Most white RBs I see are darters, but Sam can literally bounce cut off two legs without slowing down much at all. I'm not saying that darting isn't a very effective running style; it is actually the more common one, but that few guys can bounce the way Sam does and just take the defender completely out of the play in the open field. I think the darting style favors the one cut and go style which is great for zone blocking schemes and helps as a north-south runner who moves the chains. But Sam can do both and is one of those rare types that can consistently break long runs.

The record for most 30+ yard runs in a season stood until this year all the way back to when Jim Brown set the record with seven. This year DeAngelo Williams had 8 30 yard runs. In truth this ESPN utter garbage about how every white RB can't make guys miss in the second level or have the speed to break long runs is proven untrue by the fact that the NFL should really be testing a 25 or 30 yard dash when you consider that eight 30 yard runs in a season is the record. Gale Sayers record was 6 and Barry Sanders was 5 I believe.

Also ESPN will outright fabricate and say that any of the top black prospects have that mythical hip wiggle to cut in the open field without slowing down when these guys are VERY few and far between, but McGuffie is one of those very rare breeds IMO.

The only area of Sam's game that isn't elite is his power; which he can improve.

That hell of a program at Michigan didn't help him by throwing him to the wolves in the first two games without blocking, and having him return kicks after having two concussions was very irresponsible.

He looked absolutely great in the Notre Dame game and that is what he could be capable of every week once he feels comfortable and gets even average blocking. If he can add 10-15 lbs. and learn to fall forward better when hit Sam will end up being an elite yards per carry guy, but of course this is mainly attributed to his home-run threat and in-space ability. Sam McGuffie was 2nd fastest (by 1/100th of a second) in the heats of the 60 meters at the Conference USA championships today. The finals are tomorrow.
He came in 3rd in the LJ.
Mind you this is from a guy who spends most of his time focused on football; so pretty impressive.

Wow, a 6.82 is pretty impressive since he has done very little track training this year. Ronald Arajs of UTEP has the 3rd fastest qualifying time. 2 of the top 3 are white.

In college track, the 60 meters would appear to be his event. Or he could give the 110 hurdles a try with his amazing finesse and leaping ability. With a PERSONAL BEST time of 10.86 in the 100 meters in H.S, which is fabulous for H.S meets, he will never win any COMPETITIVE Division IA meet in college unless he can start setting new PBs consistently.

As far as football is concerned: my guess would be that he has better top-end speed than 75% of the RBs WHO GET PLAYING TIME in the NFL, but it is his ACCELERATION that sets him apart. He'd probably be a 4.45 40 guy without the INSANE burst.

Compare Guff's 60 meter time to Pickering's best time this year of 6.57=0.25 sec difference=10/6*0.25 for 100 meters=0.42 seconds and add that to Pickering's best 100 meter time last year: 10.15 (If I recall) and Guff would be running a 10.57 with holding an equal top-end speed to Pickering. He probably actually has ACCELERATION in the same range of Pickering and other world-class sprinters in the world (even Bolt); that is how quickly Sam gets up to top speed.

Edited to add: And he should surely improve his 60 meter times; if he puts more time into track; which is hard to get really focused in with his football commitments. Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

Conference USA Track Results

To be fair TJR, McGuffie only ran the 100m a couple of times in track meets and he did the high jump, long jump, and the hurdles. If he just focused on sprinting and trained to sprint, I have no doubts that he could be one of the best sprinters at the college level. Ronald Arajs who qualified with a 6.84, has run a 10.40 in high school and a 10.27 in college.Edited by: SteveB

With a 7 flat 60m I cant see him running a 4.3 40 yard dash. Maybe a high 4.3 or a low 4.4 though.

TJ,
normally i agree with everything you say but i have to disagree with your statements that Sam has a better burst than Bush and McFadden. its way too early to compare Sam to these guys. he's just a freshmen right now and i definitely think he will develop into a college star rb. but comparing him to darren or reggie right now is not realistic and its not fair to Sam. lets give him time to heal and lets cheer the loudest when he shines.

cheers

Reggie Bush was a huge "COLLEGE SUCCESS" behind USC's great o-lines and offenses. McFadden had a great college career, but again he had more time and Arkansas offenses were better than Michigan. McFadden ran a 1.5 flat 10 yard split which is a good time for a RB, but not "eye popping". In fact Jacob Hester ran the same 10 yard split.

The record for 10 yard dash used to be Eric Weddle at 1.43; Chris Johnson just broke the record last year with a 1.4 flat split. Trust me IMHO McGuffie will go sub 1.5 at the combine for 10 yard split. His RIDICULOUS 40 time of 4.32 is more his burst than his top-end speed which is also good, but not unbelievable.

He has got to put together a great college career at Rice. Even so, it is still a huge uphill battle for him to break thorough.

But what can the NFL say about McGuffie if he has eye-popping production at Rice. They can't lie and say he's slower than any decent RB prospect like they did with Hillis. They might try the weak competition line; but what about all the blacks from weak conferences and lower levels. Maybe McGuffie, Hillis, Hester, Tre Smith and Jesse Lumsden could get a class action lawsuit together against the National-FORBIDDEN WHITES-League. I have a dream too Martin Luther King and suing the NFL is my dream.

Danny woodhead was picked up (even though he wasnt drafted) and he's d2. The announcers on the draft day were making the case for him saying "if the kid can run, then he deserves his shot" and such. Either way, i feel mcguffie will get his chance through a combination of his youtube hype and the things hes done/will do in college.

I think he has great burst and if you can compare the two if you look at reggie bush's high school tapes compared to reggie bush's. Sam Mcguffie has freakish athletic ability. One thing i noticed, his equipment at Michigan didnt seem to fit him quite right, maybe I am just seeing things but it didnt look like it fit his body better than his equipment in high school

I just looked it up Sam finished 7th in the final running a 10.84, which is better than his PB of 10.86 from H.S. The winner ran a 10.4. Still quite an accomplishment for him making the C-USA finals!

Edited to add: I saw that Sam ran faster in the Prelims with a time of 10.70 making the finals as the 8th qualifier.Edited by: ToughJ.Riggins

And he ran 10.70 in the prelims. His most amazing event is the long jump, though. He got 7.52 and second place. If he were not such a good runningback I would say he should try and go pro in the long jump. 7.52 meters!

7.52 meters converts to 24 feet 8 inches. That's an amazing jump for a Division I athlete- especially a guy who doesn't do track full time.

Is there any way, C Darwin, that you could rename this thread to reflect the fact that Sam is now at Rice? It would help, as I know a few people aren't sure where Sam went to when he left Michigan.
