I wish Michigan would have redshirted him one year. He could have adjusted to life in Michighan and then he could have really shined on the biggest stage in college sports. It would have been incredible. Oh well. At least he will be the main star at Rice. They do appreciate him and he will get a chance to shine. I just hate the fact that Rice is rarely on tv. Maybe ESPN will show a few more games with Sam the Man playing there.

Yes we don't have to run to the dinner table at birth to be assured a spot at the table. The brotha's have to mature faster because it is survival of the fittest in their screwed up worlds.

I hope to see Sam running the ball in several games this season and wish him the best on a productive and injury free college career!

Sam will do well here at Rice. He loves it here and we love having him.

I sure hope so. As a Michigan native and former UM supporter I wish Sam the best at Rice. Nice nickname BTW.

As we get closer to the beginning of the college season, it's fun to watch the Houston-area newspapers as folks there are stoked about McGuffie playing this year, being the focal point of the offense. It's an unusual occurence to have a white RB as thego-to guy at an FBS school, to say the least.

<TD ="caption">Sam McGuffie was a HS YouTube sensation</TD></TR></T></T></TABLE>Sam McGuffie wasn't very comfortable while playing football at Michigan. He suffered several concussions. He was a bit of a loner. He missed his family. He was a long way from home. All of this was written in various stories after the 2008 college football season. So he was granted permission to transfer to Rice. With a slight catch. He had to sit out for a season.

But that season has passed, and he's ready to play football again.

"It's wild. It's been a wild ride so far," McGuffie said of his time off. "I believe that we have something special here [at Rice], that not everyone knows about, but the people in this building do. I just think with a little a bit more practice, a little bit more coaching, and just a couple of more opportunities I think we're going to be something special here in the near future."

<A name=more></A>It was tough for McGuffie, standing around on the sidelines and watching the Owls suffer through a 2-10 season a year after winning the Texas Bowl.

"It's been a tough year for him, and us, knowing that he's over there and can't play," Owls coach David Bailiff said. "But he is so excited to get out there today [and practice]. He's one of those, a lot like James Casey. One of the first here and the last to leave. He loves football, and he loves to practice. And the beautiful thing is we have a lot of young men like that now. That absolutely love this game and are passionate about it. We're really thrilled Sam chose us, and we can't wait to see him out there in the blue carrying the ball."

That McGuffie had to sit out a year, however, shows some of the unfairness of the NCAA rules. A coach can break a contract and go to another school without NCAA penalty of any type. Despite a contract saying that a guy is the coach of Cincinnati, that coach can just bolt for Notre Dame at the drop of a hat and not only does nobody care, but nobody could stop it if they wanted. But should a player decide that Rich Rodriguez is not the right coach for him, or that he just doesn't fit into the school or the system, then that player has to sit out a season.

If that is, the school even allows him to transfer.

Normally, for a player to transfer from one FBS school to another, the player must first seek written permission from his current school. Even then, the player's current school can dictate the schools to which he can transfer. It doesn't matter if the coach who recruited the player leaves or is fired, the player must stay. So even though Brian Kelly gets to completely soak up the atmosphere of Notre Dame, the players he recruited are stuck at Cincinnati.

The NCAA isn't totally heartless, however. When USC got hit with some major penalties for issues arising from the playing careers of Reggie Bush and O.J. Mayo, the NCAA allowed the players on the team to transfer to just about any school they wanted without having to sit out for the season. The only exception is that they couldn't transfer to another school in the PAC 10.

But McGuffie, who was playing for a coach who appears to be a walking NCAA violation, but whose school was not yet on any type of probation, had to sit out the season even though he just wanted to play closer to home and to his family.

"That's going to be special to me," he said. "I remember all of the little kids that used to come to my games, and all the people from my city, and around my city, and my area coming after the games, and being able to talk to them and hear their stories about their days....I think it's going to be just a perfect opportunity to play for them and put on a show."

It's been a long wait for McGuffie. And it's one that he shouldn't have had to sit through. Then again, the NCAA has never been accused of being a rational, logical, or compassionate organization. But maybe this year away from the game will make the first time McGuffie hits that hole and puts on a burst speed to get into the defensive backfield that much sweeter.

McGuffie or someone he knows should've been reading CF, it would have saved him a lot of trouble.

I have a dream ....that one day white football players will live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by their athletic ability! I have that dream!!!!

Great quote jaxvid. I like that one alot. I think McGuffie sitting out a year is a blessing in disguise. Those concussions he had are nothing to fool around with. He needed to be 100% healthy and head injuries can take alot of time to heal properly. I'm sure he is ready to go. One thing he needs to do though is to learn how to get low before they take his head off. Sometimes he stays upright and at this level, it's dangerous. I expect him to have a huge year!

Sam has a tough task ahead of him in game one. Rice plays #5 Texas in their first game. It will be a tall task for him to have a big game as Texas has one heck of a Defensive Line. I'm not real sure about Rice and their offensive line but I'm hoping for the best. If he can go for over 100 yards in this game, it would really make a statement.

His best hope is probably to get more passes in open space and pitches to the outside as there might not be much room to run b/w the tackles with the run blocking vs the dline for Texas. Just pass him the ball in the backfield and let him do the rest. I am sure he will be able to get 100+ yards with rushing/receiving combined.

Sam McGuffie showed flashes of being great considering the circumstances of how the game was played. He wasn't given that many carries. He only lost yards on 2 plays out of 15. Given a few more carries I think he could have hit a homerun. His line was overmatched and there wasn't much there, at Michigan he never had a problem with dancing around and reversing field, because there was usually some type of crease there. His first season he lacked bulk/power (not to mention trying to adjust to the college level) and it looks like he beefed up quite a bit, and has shown an increase of power in his running. Out of all the backs, Sam still looks to have the most potential with size/agility/speed etc. Except people may bash him and want him pulled out of the game the first time he loses yards, no one bashed Sanders or wanted him pulled out of the game for losing yards, and I believe he had the most negative rushing plays in history of the NFL. Once Sam gets some decent blocking and the o-coordinator has a decent game plan he will light it up. The coach even said they weren't trying to win this game, they were trying to see what worked best, and who worked best in what packages. He said "im not trying to win the big-12, im trying to win C-USA". He should have had these things settled in camp/practice, not against a top ranked opponent, but whatever, the point is it didn't leave much opportunity for Sam to shine.

I agree with snow- Sam had one lousy decision, but other than that- he played well for his first game back against the #5 team in the country. The Rice passing game was anemic most of the game- and Texas started stacking against the run, but Sam still showed he can create yards with his explosiveness- when little is there- and he looked like he has gotten significantly stronger- and a bit bulkier- without losing his speed.

On the other loss yards play McGuffie had- the black defender made the perfect hard tackle without getting dirty. I think some of you guys wrongly assume that MOST black players desire to injure white skill players. That black DE for Texas could have literally tried to take Sam's head off (a helmet to helmet hit etc.) and make it look like an accident- from the angle Sam ran right into him. The black defender handled it exactly as he should of, a good clean and hard hit.

After 1 quarter, Sam has 3 carries for 3 yards and a 51 yard TD catch.

no prob. Man the run blocking is worse than it was in the Texas game, when i tuned in it said Rice had 9 rushes for 5 yards. The coach probably drilled it into McGuffies head that he should go north and south all week, but there is nothing but a brick wall, if anything, this is a team McGuffie can reverse the field on and make a big play happen, North Texas isn't filled with a bunch of guys that are close to McGuffie's level

Sam has 6 carries for 11 right now, and NT is hanging in there. Bad blocking by Rice's OL is the biggest problem so far. The Rice D isn't doing too well either.
