In an attempt to bring this thread back to Guliyev, I think in two weeks our wish could be granted. A caucasion sub 10. And for the record, he is caucasion, and may or may not have European descent. His father was a sprinter for the USSR. I would like to know his family history.

I have always said that if we could get a couple of our sprinters to disprove the myth, then more kids of future generations will take up track. Why don't you see many white sprinters? For one they don't have any role models that look like themselves to look up to. Second they have been told for generations that they can't compete. We here know that with great genetics and hard work(training), anything is possible. Why can't a white kid from anywhere in the world not dream about beating the Bolts, Powells and Gays of the world? Anything is possible despite what they tell us. I want so many european sprinters to break 10 seconds so they can never tell that lie again. I also want to see more sub 20 guys in the 200. I want our guys to get back to where they are feared and respected.

The world still laughs at most white sprinters. That can and will change in the future. We have to earn their respect and we will. Thanks to guys like Ramil Guliyev, some people are sensing that we can compete. Keep it up Ramil and best of luck to you in the European Junior Championships. He just might pull the rare double gold!

I know there have been many many disappointments in the past, but I can really feel it this time. The Euro Juniors are going to be explosive, very uplifting for all of us.

Guliyev and Lemaitre are prodigies.

Guliyev clocked a phenomenal 10.08, the second fastest 100m ever by a European junior, at the European Athletics Outdoor Classic Meeting in Istanbul on June 13, while Lemaître continues to prove his top class credentials with a French junior record of 10.17 recently.

Over 100m, the pair is a long way ahead of the rest of Europe, led by Germany's Robert Hering who has 10.34 to his name.

The Azerbaijan teenager from Baku showed his stunning form was no flash-in-the-pan by storming to a European junior 200m record of 20.04 at the World University Games in the Serbian capital Belgrade less than two weeks ago.

"For the rest of the season, I'm chasing a European junior record in the 100m and I'm also looking to go under 20 seconds for the 200m. Whether that comes in the European juniors or at the World Championships in Berlin, I don't mind," said Guliyev, after winning in Belgrade.

I love his confidence. That is very important in any sprinter. You have to belive you can be the best. Both Ramil and Christophe have a ton of confidence and a little swagger as well. Ramil is probably a little more intimidating than Lemaitre but they both have it. No doubt about it. I can't wait for this weekend. History in the making I hope. I want to remember this weekend a decade from now!

Just bumping Ramil back towards the top. He took the silver medal at the European Junior Championships today in the 100 running a 10.16 wind legal. There really wasn't but a trace of a wind. Tommorow he runs in the semis and finals of the 200 meters. I'm hoping he can break his 20.04 p.b. from two weeks ago. You can do it Ramil.

French sprinter Christophe Lemaître ran a fantastic 100m at the 20th European Athletics Junior Championships in Novi Sad, leading from gun to tape before stopping the clock in a European junior 100m record of 10.04.

Lemaître's performance was the highlight of an outstanding second day in Serbia's second city, at which four other championship records were also set, three of them coming in field events.

The long-legged Lemaître was quickest out of his blocks in the men's 100m final, with the amazing reaction time of 0.120 for a sprinter 1.89m tall, and was straight into his running. Daylight shone between himself and the rest of the field by 40 metres.

His winning time was also the second fastest ratified mark ever by a junior athlete. The previous European junior record was 10.06, set by Dwain Chambers when the British sprinter won at the 1997 European Athletics Junior Championships.

"I was only focused getting to the top of the podium. Of course, I was motivated to make a good time but in a championship it is always at the bottom of the list of priorities," reflected Lemaître after his record run.

"I thought that the junior record of France might come, but the European record, I did not expect me at all. I am a bit speechless. Now, I'm going to rest and give my best so that, with my friends, we can also go back with a relay medal. Now I'm looking forward to Berlin (the IAAF World Championships next month). I think that I can do something great there, I can run even faster," he added.

Azerbaijan's Ramil Guliyev, who had run 10.08 this year but deliberately taken it easy during Thursday's two preliminary rounds, had a relatively sluggish start but started to motor from the halfway point and started to close on Lemaître during the final 20m but had to settle for the silver medal in 10.16.

Ramil ran his 10.08 with a 1.3 m/s wind, and ran a 10.16 with no wind here. With a better start and the same wind, he would have beaten 10.08, and Christophe would have made bigger history. Nice to see that that is his goal in Berlin! The two fastest men in Europe are white, and the fastest juniors ever. Nice. Sub 10/20 between the two of them soon! Nice call on the upset WL.

A little disappointed in Guliyev - he was the easy favorite to win, so I wished he would have pushed himself to a faster time. But he was excited just to win. On the other hand that's understandable, given his loss to Lemaitre in the 100m; and 20.33 is still a great time - meet record!

Ramil Guliyev won the gold medal in a time of 20.33 into a slightly negative wind. He had a false start when they first lined up so he had to make sure he stayed in his blocks to keep from getting disqualified. He also started celebrating with around 10 meters to go. This is a very nice time and he could have gone at least a tenth faster if not for these things combined.

Robert Herring took the silver but he really died out coming down the stretch. He was close to Guliyev on the turn but had nothing left. It was a clean sweep for us in the mens 200 just like the womens. We also had 7 out of 8 men in the 200 Final!

I'm very proud of these guys. Congratulations to Ramil especially. To still run a 20.33 after 6 races in 2 days is amazing. Not to mention the other factors. The kid is a star. He walks with a swagger and he reminds me alot of Wariner. He even stretches the same way as Jeremy when he gets in the starting blocks.

I can't wait to see him line up next week in Germany.

great time considering the wind, false start, and number of rounds he ran. Herring should have taken it a little easy in the rounds. he was running each race like it was the final. he could have taken it allot easier and saved some energy for the final. Berlin is going to be awesome!

Your forgetting that most of these guys race next weekend in Germany on August 2nd. It will be the last major meet in Germany before the World Champs. Guliyev is just one of many elite sprinters going there.

I noticed the "swagger" too, WL. Guliyev has it all, the leg cadence,the stride, the endurance. But perhaps the critical differentiating factor is: CONFIDENCE. The belief he has in himself is all over his face and in his demeanor, and I'm most excited about that! Once he breaks 20.00, which will be soon, he will have the competition scared sh**.

Guliyev should focus on the 200 in Berlin if he wants to be competitive in the finals. He ran his 10.08 on an easy day and same with his 20.04. He is more competitive in the 200, and can make the finals and maybe medal. Doing the 100 too is too much I think, especially with the amount of heats he'd have to run.

It's a tough call for him to make. I have a feeling he will still run both. I just saw the medal ceremony. Ramil just looks like a star. It has that certain something. He has the look, the swagger, the attitude and all the talent in the world. He also is a nice guy after races as he shakes hands.

I noticed when he was in the last 10 meters of winning the 200, he looked just like Kenteris as he put his hands out to the side. It was really cool and brought back memories. I wonder if he was ever a fan of Kenteris? Either way, this kid is doing it the right way. People everywhere will know his name soon. Congrats Ramil.
