Yes the White Wolf was there to win. He was in reasonable shape and didn't have a sparring partner attitude like when he fought Valuev. It was a better win for Helenius than the Peter fight.

Lyakhovich gave it his best effort, and was ahead in the fight going in to that last round.

But Helenius is a beast - what a finish to the fight!

Very interesting. From Fightnews:

Unbeaten heavyweight Alexander Povetkin (22-0, 15 KOs) scored a twelve round unanimous decision over former WBA titleholder Ruslan Chagaev (27-2-1, 17 KOs) to claim the vacant WBA “regularâ€￾ heavyweight title on Saturday night at the Messehall in Erfurt, Germany. A very close fight over the first five rounds. Chagaev seemed to be coming on in the sixth and seventh. Povetkin had a strong round eight while Chagaev suddenly seemed to be fading as the bout progressed. Povetkin was in total command in rounds ten and eleven as Chagaev looked spent. Knowing he’s behind, Chagaev went on the attack in round twelve, but it was two little, too late. Scores were 117-113, 117-113, 116-112. Of course, Wladimir Klitschko remains the WBA heavyweight “superâ€￾ champion. Rumor has it that Povetkin could make his first defense against Evender Holyfield, who was quite visible during fight week.

First defense against a 50 year old man? There are plenty of more deserving white fighters that should be getting title shots but instead Holyfield may get one? Nope, no agenda here at all. Holyfield has dozens of kids with multiple baby mommas so they have to give the brutha big fights so he can stay out of bankruptcy. Maybe they can bring the 62 year old George Foreman out of retirement to face Povetkin. After all he did fight a mere 14 years ago and as well all know these super black athletes never lose their athleticism even going into old age.

I won't complain about a fight versus Oldyfield. It will heighten Alex's name recognition. Sadly enough, most DWFs will never hear the results of this fight against Chagaev on ESPN. Thye will know when Evander is KO'd by Povetkin though.

You are right. It certainly will give Povetkin some recognition when he beats Holyfield. However, boxing careers don't last forever. The goal in boxing is to try and be as successful as possible and the ring and of course make the maximum amount of money you can. Holyfield made millions upon millions of dollars earlier in his career. He had huge paydays and only he's to blame for blowing all that money. I could name you at least twenty white fighters that deserve a nice payday against Povetkin before Holyfield does.Basically, if Holyfield gets the fight, he's taking food out of some white fighters mouth. Giving this old man another title fight while younger and much more talented white fighters continue to fight chump after chump is just not right.

I hear ya, man. But since a white man ended Tyson's career it would also be cool to have a white man end Holyfield's career.

Not that I dislike Evander. He is not my race but he fought with some pride and respect for his opponent (unlike Tyson). Also unlike Tyson, he never made racist comments about whites.

fighting Holyfield is LOSE/LOSE, when he beats him it will be because of
"Holyfields age", if he loses he was overhyped. It's like fighting a retarted kid, even if you win you look like an *******.

I don't mind watching Povetkin beating the hell out of Holyfield.

Well, the white guy won...and the white guy lost. Don't know what to make of it, really. I figured Sergei's body attack would give Helenius problems. You get the feeling that as long as the check clears, Sergei can live with losing while ahead on points again.

A Holyfield challenge, now there's an interesting fight, kind of like Mick Jagger taking the stage piques the curiosity, the question being how much does he have left, and how bad might he look. The dumber white chumps and saps will buy into it because they don't know any better.

I won't deny it, I was hoping the White Wolf would pull the upset. I was stoked when he was taking Robert to school with the body attack, ring generaship and superior boxing skills. I was the White Wolf's biggest supporter. Also, it was obvious he bit the bullet and game into the fight in tip top condition, minus the flab.

His corner after the the 8th should have known he was in the driver's seat in pulling out the win. Alas, kudos to Robert in have the fortitude to pull the trigger in KO'ing Sergie. Great fight. Too bad the White Wolf had to lose. It was obvious he knew it was do or die fight. Sergie was within 3 minutes to winning that big fight and advancing to a big pay day with Wlad or Vitali. Oh, well life goes on, hopefullly Sergie gets a nother fight and wins and makes some big money.

I was a little dismissive of Sergie without having watched the fight. Now that I've seen it, wow, what a fight. The White Wolf was in great shape and he fought his heart out. Helenius's power and chin were the difference. He's not the most stylish, but he's tough and hits hard. That finishing combo in the ninth round was brutal.

This fight should have been on HBO or Showtime. I wonder what the problem is?

Sergei Liakhovich Update

After his brutal knockout loss to heavyweight contender Robert Helenius on Saturday night in Erfurt, Germany, former heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich was taken to a local emergency room in the early morning hours where a CT scan revealed that his nose had been broken in two places during the bout. Gasping for breath from early in the third round when the first fracture occurred, until the fight was stopped in the ninth by veteran referee Stanley Christodoulu, Liakhovich suffered fractures of the bones located high up on the bridge of both the right and left sides of his nose.
“Sergei was unable to breathe through his nose from the moment the first break occurred in the third round,” Manager Tony Cardinale said. At the same time, Liakhovich began to swallow copious amounts of blood as he attempted to catch a breath through his mouth.
“Sergei proved last night that he is one of the toughest fighters in the heavyweight division.” Cardinale continued. “Despite a painful handicap that made it nearly impossible for him to take a proper breath, Sergei kept on coming. Even after the knockdown, he came back swinging. Had Sergei not been so severely injured, I think he would have won the fight.”
Doctors, last night, advised “The White Wolf” to remain at the hospital and have immediate surgery under general anesthesia. However, later on Sunday morning, a surgeon determined that the bruising and swelling was too severe to operate right now.
Liakhovich, whose trip back to the US has been postponed due to travel restrictions caused by Hurricane Irene, intends to have the necessary surgery later this week when he returns to his home in Arizona.
“Those who say that there are no exciting fighters in the heavyweight division haven’t been paying attention,” promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events said. “Sergei has now participated in two of the most action-packed heavyweight fights of the past 10 years and he let me know this morning that he wishes to remain as active as possible as soon as he recovers.”
The Belarusian, who has been inactive for 17 months due to a contractual dispute, a training injury and an injury suffered by Helenius earlier in the summer, fought under the Main Events banner for the first time, last night.
“A fighter needs to stay active to be sharp,” Duva continued. “While fighting through the pain and barely able to breathe, Sergei actually improved his performance during the middle rounds as his timing started to come back. When Sergei fully recovers from his injuries, Main Events intends to treat Sergei’s fans–and I know he made a lot of new ones last night–by keeping him very busy.”

Helenius has now beaten Liakhovich, Brewster, Sam Peter, and Taras Bydenko and easily has one of the most impressive heavyweight resumes around despite only 16 fights. I have to be honest though, I was rooting for the White Wolf.

Sergei is 35 years old and is inactive most of the time. It was better that 26 year old undefeated active fighter Helenius won. I just wish he didn't have to rely on a KO to overcome huge point deficits.

Povetkin is undefeated and a year younger than Chagaev. It was better he won to give Wlad another possible undefeated opponent to face.

This fight has shown just how deep the talent pool is today. Liakhovich is 35, a former world champion and only lost three fights, but he can't even make the top ten today. In the 70's 80's and 90's a fighter like that would be ranked at the very worst 3 or 4...
