They showed the Bengals running the Oklahoma drill on NFL network and Burkhead looked phenomenal. He only had 2 hands put on him by a defender once out of 4 or 5 times through the drill. Even Giovanni Bernard (the 1st RB taken in the draft) had 2 hands on him by a defender twice.

Burkhead is extremely shifty! Rex also is smart to know that being overly emotional for not being treated right will get you blackballed in this league (just look at Hillis' situation). Rex has done tons for the community and was a great friend to a kid with terminal cancer. It may take BenJarvis Green-Ellis getting a high ankle sprain for Rex to get significant time this season. However, even without that, I'm confident Rex will at least get the Leonard role with the Bengals. Rex will provide more efficiency than Leonard in this role!

Ourlads has Burkhead as fifth on the depth chart. Jesus! Is he even going to make the team?

Wow! I thought at the very least he'd be third. Given how he looked at Nebraska when healthy, and how he's looked in camp based on ToughJ's description, he should be a lock.. in a fair world of course. In a fair world, he would've been taken in the 2-3 rounds, and not having to fight a bunch of recycled bums for the third RB spot.

Also, Rex plays on ESPN tonight, for those that are interested.

Also of note, screwed over former Bengal Chase Coffman gets the start at TE for the Falcons tonight.. I hope he shreds them!

I wonder if he's going to get a single carry. Hasn't so far. The rest of their backs have been pretty sad.

I should have said "hopeful" not confident. Burkhead is better than Leonard even though he has less top end speed. Rex has about equal speed to Alfred Morris whom I compare him to.

Rex was still faster than 4 or 5 afrolete RBs at the NFL combine if I recall correctly and was a top performer in all other drills. At least 7 Rbs ran faster than him by only the skin of their teeth. Rex is shifty, with burst and great vision, balance, hands etc. If he were black he'd have been drafted just ahead of Stepfan Taylor due to better measureables and slightly better efficiency against stronger rush defenses.

Welcome back, TJR! This is exactly the kind of post that I've missed while ToughJ has been out. Very well thought-out unbiased analytical posts that the rest of us can use to pummel stooopid DWF's with when we venture to their sites.

A lot of great posters have left. One of my favorites Lost, Groundfighter, and Bart just to name a few. I wonder what has happened to them?

burnout, how much torture can you take? getting hopes up every year only to be let down and things get worse. I don't know why I keep paying attention, hoping that I along with others can change things for the better, but the small progress can be discouraging, because its a long term process.

Truth about Rex Burkhead.

Stigma's such as these have followed him his entire career:

Power Back
Plodding
Lunch Pale carrying
Deceptive
Hard worker etc. etc.

Truth is:

He is a freak and top notch athlete with incredible football knowledge.

Lets compare him to the Bengals 2nd round and 1st RB pick of the 13 draft:

40 Yard Dash:
Gio 4.53 Ranked 8th

Rex: 4.73 Not Ranked

Bench Press:
Gio: Not Ranked
Rex: Ranked 13th

Vertical Leap:
Gio:33.5" Ranked 15th
Rex: 39" Ranked 2nd

Broad Jump:
Gio: 10'2" Ranked 6th
Rex: 10'5" Ranked 2nd

3 Cone Drill:

Gio: 6.91 Ranked 9th
Rex: 6.85 Ranked 4th

20 Yard Shuttle:
Gio: 4.12 Ranked 3rd
Rex: 4.09 Ranked 2nd

60 Yard Shuttle:
Gio: 11.41 Ranked 3rd
Rex: 11.51 Ranked 5th

So in head to head physical athletic tests Rex beats Gio: 5 tests to Rex and 2 to Gio.

Now you go and check out the NFL combine draft score and they show GIO as the #1 ranked RB draft prospect, yeah right ROTFLMAO.

Lets go to the highlight tape:

http://www.youtube.com/embed/XnxHQ2dhMF8

vs

http://www.youtube.com/embed/PyfpctaI99Y

NOT EVEN CLOSE, yet the bias there is in Marvin Sanders is obvious.

During the draft recap he stated Rex Burkhead played some FullBack at Nebraska. No he didn't.

Burkhead is a complete runningback. He can catch, block, read defenses, and most importantly RUN. His combine 40 was his only mistake and he is no 4.7 second back. He is a legit sub 4.6 and anything else that is required by an RB he has produced elite athlete type of numbers.

But Bennard from what Marvin Sanders is saying in code is basically he is safe, assured a spot and Rex will have to beat someone out and if not may be practice squad material.

Total BS.

Rex has as good or better agility, acceleration, vision, power, size, hands, and imo most importantly combination of all those skills. The only thing I would give Bennard is top speed and Bennard doesn't possess much more of that like many would like to think.

By the way, been lurking for awhile and decided to join, tired of the anti-white athlete BS that is taking over every sport imaginable in the U.S espeically college and especially NFL football.

Excellent post. Lightning throws a TD pass with his first post!

Welcome.

Well just saw the 1st episode of Hard Knocks featuring the bungles. If there is another team to root against this is it.

It was an infomercial of affelets. They spent approx 5 minutes talking about Dulton and high draft pick TE. The rest on the nearly all negro team.

I saw glimpses of Burkhead but not one word about him. Maybe in the up coming episodes they will mention his name. Not. counting on it.

This is the second time that HBO is featuring the bungles. Maybe most teams did not want the distraction of cameras. But I suspect the very dark hue of the team is part of the reason it is put out to the masses. I suspect maybe 10 to 12 whites will be on the 53 man roster if that. Depressing.

If you watch Rex, you'll notice his brilliant vision and instincts as a runner, which is something Brian Leonard has never possessed as a runner despite being faster (BL Is blessed with remarkable athleticism otherwise and is a great receiver- though certainly not as shifty as Rex either).

Most DWFs are dumb and don't remember statistics that they look at that might wake them up that white skill players can compete. I can name 4 black RBs at the NFL combine who were slower than Rex w/o even looking it up and only looking at the list a couple times. Robbie Rouse 4.8, Ray Graham 4.78, Stepfan Taylor 4.76, George Wynn 4.75.

Rex ran a 4.72...A couple names I remember that ran barely faster than him are Jawan Jamison: 4.68, Theo Riddick: 4.68, Miguel Maysonet: 4.66?

Alfred Morris ran a 4.67 and had a remarkable rookie season last year- and there are several other NFL RBs that get significant playing time that can't crack 4.63 in the 40 (that is less than 0.1 faster than Rex; 0.1 in the 40 is a hair under a yard difference). Both Blount (4.71) and Ridley who dominated 4 the Pats against the Eagles can't crack 4.63. Lacy didn't run at the combine, but was hand-timed in the mid 4.6s (equates to 4.7 at the combine?).

Some guys who know they'll be slower than ideal don't run or some are injured. A white man trying to make it as a RB in the NFL basically has to run and his stock will fall more with a poor 40 time than a black back. A guy like Rex, whom speed isn't his best gift, must feel incredible pressure when getting ready to run this make it or break it 40, which will be harsher judged for him than a black back.

Johnathan Dwyer and Marc Ingram were basically exactly 4.63. Emmitt Smith the league's all time leading rusher was said to run about a 4.6 as was said about WR Jerry Rice!

As JC says; Elite track speed is like icing on a cake. It certainly helps to have, but you can still be a successful NFL RB without it. The cutoff to me for being a solo complete workhorse in the NFL is 4.7. The cutoff in speed, for evenly splitting carries with another back, (which if I were coach I'd have Rex do with Bernard) is 4.85.

Plus it takes time to research things. If we get our facts wrong, as occasionally happens, Maximus=Texas Tech (or some other guy who supports the caste system) will come in here and tell us we are wrong (even though I've caught him with misinformation before.)

That is why I reposted, only with the 40 times I remembered.

The bottom line here: is Marvin Lewis would be very stupid to not IN THE LEAST have Rex play an upscaled version of BL's old role. I'm confident Rex would already perform better than Lawfirm this year if given the same chance. And by the way, Lawfirm is another player who's only marginally faster than Rex!

If the Bengals really want to win, they'd be at least grooming Burkhead for BJE's old role, and Sanzenbacher would have won at least the #3 WR role with his performance in the first preseason game. Combined with Tyler Eifert as a solid receiving option, that offense would be fun to watch.

Marvin Lewis' history suggests otherwise, however. It would certainly be ironic if two of the best offenses to root for this year turn out to be the Eagles and the Bengals.

I'm cautiously optimistic that Burkhead will get to run the ball some. Maybe not this season, but all it takes is an injury to Green-Ellis or Bernard and he'll be in the game. Many are realizing that Bernard is too small to be an every down back, and just about nobody thinks of Green-Ellis other than as a mediocre journeyman, so Rex is in a pretty good spot. And if the Bengals are stupid enough to cut Rex or put him on the practice squad, you have to believe another team will pick him up. I believe he's the best all-around back in this year's draft.

Watched the 2nd episode of Hard Knocks. Still no mention of Burkhead? Just a couple of groups shots of him in the group. They did however, give alot of time to Margus Hunt. The rest of the time, affelete upon affelet.

As I mentioned in the 2013 Steelers thread, this year's most talented all-around rookie running back is in a battle just to make the roster:

Burkhead, Herron in Tight Race for Bengals' Roster Spot

by Joe Reedy

With two preseason games remaining, there isn’t any separation in the battle for the last running back spot between Dan Herron and Rex Burkhead. Neither one is making it easy.

Herron is tied for the team lead in carries (17) and has the highest yards-per-carry average among the running backs at 6.5. Burkhead is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, with two of his 15 carries being for 15-plus yards.

“They both have shown a lot of promise in every phase of the running back competition. That’s what makes it tough, and it’s going to be important they keep doing that in the last two games,” said offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.

After being under the radar for much of training camp, Herron made his case with 81 yards on nine carries in last Saturday’s 27-19 win over Tennessee. That also included a 40-yard touchdown during the fourth quarter where he went right, got bottled up and then quickly reversed field.

Herron was among the final roster cuts during the preseason last year but was signed to the practice squad. He remained there until being added to the 53-man roster before Week 13 and played in three games. His greatest impact came on special teams, when he partially blocked a punt against Dallas and blocked a punt at Philadelphia.

Coach Marvin Lewis has been pleased with Herron’s progress throughout the offseason, and running backs coach Hue Jackson has been pleased with how physical Herron has been, not only running but in pass protection as well.

“My thing was trying to get better overall – blocking, catching the ball out of the backfield,” Herron said. “Any time you have a pretty good game it is encouraging, but you have to understand you can’t read too much into it. I have to keep working.”

Burkhead had the most yards for the running backs in the preseason opener at Atlanta (52 yards on nine carries). Against the Titans, he had a 22-yard carry around right end to the Titans 23.

During the combine, Burkhead’s 40 time was a subpar 4.73, but he shows a quicker burst on the field, especially getting to the outside.

“I feel like I have good speed and I feel like game speed is a lot more important than what you time out at. I feel like I see the game fast and play fast,” he said.

In the end, the decision on who to keep could come down to two factors – who can make a bigger contribution on special teams immediately and who has more potential.

Both play all four units on special teams. Burkhead is a personal protector on punt coverage and a guard on punt returns. Herron’s forte is blocking punts. Besides what he did last year, he nearly got his hands on one at Atlanta.

When it comes to potential, Burkhead might have the edge. Some projected him as a second- or third-round pick going into his senior year at Nebraska before his stock dropped due to injuries. Burkhead has also drawn comparisons to former Bengal Brian Leonard because of what he can do catching the ball and his ability to pass block. If Burkhead is released, there are doubts that he could clear waivers and be added to the practice squad. Herron still has practice squad eligibility.

“Part of it is the 46-man roster (who is active on game days),” Lewis said. “The way I look at it is if I woke up tomorrow and I didn’t have that guy, how would I feel between A or B. Tomorrow and a week from now, who would disappoint you the most if they were no longer on the team and how that fits going into Sunday.”

When it comes to potential, it’s also about who can help you win today. In that respect, Herron might have the edge based on special teams play.

Burkhead will have a homecoming during Saturday’s game at Dallas. He is from Plano, Texas, and has played at Cowboys Stadium twice, when Nebraska was a member of the Big 12 and played in the conference championship games.

With the third preseason game usually being the dress rehearsal for the starters, both players don’t figure to get that many carries. Both, though, will see plenty of work in the Aug. 29 preseason finale against Indianapolis.

“We still have a lot of work to do, like I told our guys. The second week there was improvement. We just have to put our head down,” Jackson said. “I’m not surprised by anything the guys are doing or aren’t doing. I see it every day. My job is to try and enhance their strengths and try to make their weaknesses stronger. We’re just trying to create that environment so they can keep getting better.”

Amazing, the 1st pre season game, he did well, no mention of him the 2nd episode. One thing is for sure, Rex better make a impact game 3, or he will be put on waivers or asked to be put on the practice squad regardless! Amazing the continued hosing of our most promising and talented athelets. F'ing NFL.! Remember Danny Woodhead 3 years ago, the most yards by a RB in pre season game and excellent preseason. Then is cut for epic affelete, McNight whose most noteable accomplishment that preseason was vomiting all over "hisself". UNREAL.

Just finishing the 3rd episode of Hard Knocks. Minstrel show, white coach enablers, sympathy for affeletic 1st round busts and no mention of any new White talent. Yeah. Rex Burkhead.....no. Funny, about the only person featured that I had respect for other than Dalton, Hunt for 20 seconds was Lawfirm a player who always brings it and a sportsman.

Just finished the recent episode of Hard Knocks. Affelet fest no doubt. But alot of time spent on Margus Hunt tho. Rex Burkhead...nothing, except a quick shot of him in the player meetings.

I purposely do not watch pre season games. Anyone here watching the Bungels pre season games? How is Rex doing? No news is good news. So I guess he is still on the team going into the 4th preseason came.

Here is a short article about Rex Burkhead making the final Bengals roster. What pisses me off is that he is listed as 1 of 5 running backs on the team. How many teams keep that many rbs? He will probably barely play at all unless it's on special teams. So the best running back prospect we have had since Gerhart will basically disapear and ride the bench for the next 3 years. Explain to me why this only happens to white running backs!! What couldn't he be on a team that actually needs a running back where he can play right away? We know the powers that be just don't want to see white running backs. Complete b.s. Another waste of one hell of a talented running back.

My hope for a White marquee RB or at least one getting alot of touches that actually influences games will be Danny Woodhead. Gerhart will the feature back in Minn if AP goes down. In SD, Mathews is a stiff wind away from pulling his hamstring, so I anticipate Woody being an impact player there, unless of course the castesystem mysteriously relegates him to splinter collector status. Man I hope I am wrong.

Westside, I agree with you that Woodhead represents our best shot this year at a White RB getting meaningful carries, however, when it comes to the caste system, I have learned to always expect the unexpected. In this situation, based on his past history, we expect Matthews to get hurt and miss games, and in turn expect Woodhead to be the beneficiary. But it wouldn't surprise any one of us if the Chargers scouted and signed every affletic bum on the street before promoting Woodhead to primary ball carrier.

This writer for the Lincoln Journal Star deserves to be in any contest for 2013's DWF of the Year:

Burkhead's situation signifies NFL talent level

by Steven M. Sipple

America's love affair with the NFL is partly the result of immense respect.

We immensely respect the product. We respect the talent. The level of talent is ridiculous.

An example: A player as gifted as Rex Burkhead barely made a regular-season roster.

"I can't imagine anybody not wanting him," said Nebraska running backs coach Ron Brown, who has an inherent bias, having coached Burkhead for two seasons.

The 5-foot-10, 220-pound Burkhead on Saturday received word he was part of the Cincinnati Bengals' 53-man roster. Cincinnati opens the season Sunday at Chicago. According to a Bengals.com report, Burkhead edged former Ohio State star Daniel "Boom" Herron for the last running back spot.

Burkhead, an All-Big Ten choice in 2011, is listed fourth on the depth chart behind BenJarvus Green-Ellis, fellow rookie Giovani Bernard and Cedric Peerman.

It is significant that Burkhead beat out Herron, a native of Warren, Ohio. In addition to being a local athlete, Herron enjoyed a strong preseason, rushing 31 times for 167 yards (5.4 per carry) and a touchdown.

Burkhead rushed 28 times for 130 yards (4.6) and a touchdown. A sixth-round draft pick, he also caught five passes for 39 yards and played well on special teams.

One would think Burkhead's vast skill set, intelligence and character could keep him in the league for years. I think he will surprise doubters.

"He's a tremendous football player," said Brown, his voice rising. "I mean, you've got to be kidding me. That guy, playing on special teams, as a running back, as a fullback, a great 'team' guy -- he's a great all-around player. One of the best I've ever been around."

Which, of course, is saying a mouthful, given Brown's nearly 30 years of coaching experience.

"In terms of a running back who could do so many things well, Lawrence Phillips was awfully good," Brown said. "Rex doesn't have Lawrence's speed. But Rex is a complete football player."

The fact Burkhead fell to the sixth round wasn't a complete surprise, considering his injury issues last season. According to Nebraska coach Bo Pelini, Duke Tobin, Bengals director of player personnel, liked what he saw in Burkhead all along.

It also helped Burkhead that Pelini retains a relationship with his former Ohio State coach, John Cooper, a scouting consultant with the Bengals.

Pelini long has expressed frustration that people tend to overlook Burkhead's athleticism (his vertical leap is nearly 40 inches). Pelini bristles when Burkhead is labeled a "throwback" or "overachiever."

"Let's face it, people also say he's a white guy," the coach said. "People stereotype — that's what society does."

As Pelini pointed out this week, "Rex had doubters when he came here. But there are just so many things he can do to help a team."

Burkhead's versatility got him on the Bengals' roster. If he doesn't stick in the league, it merely represents yet another testament to the NFL's extraordinary talent level.
