Pittsburgh Steelers General Thread

Will Howard looks to be the complete package at QB to me -- tall, very fast, accurate, unafraid to go for the big play. Almost but not quite Matt Jones like in his size-running ability combo, but of course his running ability was considerably downplayed. Leads his team to the national championship and gets little but disrespect from the same suspects who now know it's mandatory to have at least one Black QB at the top of the draft every year, while several of this year's White QBs were drafted dramatically lower than where they should have been.

Would love to see Howard succeed A-Rod in a year or two. I like Mason Rudolph but he seems to be perennially screwed by the NFL, mainly by Mike Tomlin. Howard has talent to spare.

I daresay if Howard was the magical color he'd have been taken early, who can doubt that.

Last year the Steelers had one of the worst QB rooms in football. This year they are arguably among the best.

Rodgers was statistically good last year with a poorly coached and overall lackluster Jets team. If he holds up, he should be good within the Steelers structure. Rudolph, with this team, is a top backup if something goes wrong. Howard is the upside QB of the future who steps in next year or the season after. What’s not to like?

I'd be surprised if the Steelers trade Watt. T.J. had this same kind of "hold-in" before signing his last contract. The team has made some big-time moves this post-season for once in an attempt to become relevant again besides finishing 9-8 to keep Tomlin's meaningless "never had a losing season" streak going as it's going on nine years now since they won a playoff game, so they need Watt. The difference in their win-loss record with and without Watt is startling. He makes as much of an impact on a game as any defensive player in the league.

I noticed when the Steelers traded for TE Jonnu Smith the other day, that every analysis and report I read had Smith leapfrogging over Pat Freiermuth as the number one tight end. Smith finally had a good year last year, but it was his eighth NFL season after being a third round pick by the Titans, while Freiermuth while not a superstar has been a very good tight end from the get-go and has had a better career than Smith. But "athleticism" and "upside" and all, with the hive mind always promoting a Black tight end over a White one even though the White one usually prevails sooner or later.

There was a lot of chatter on the local sports radio programs yesterday about Watt and the possibility that the Chiefs might go after him. Talk about trading 1 or 2 first-round picks along with WR Rashee Rice were most prevalent. Personally I think that would be terrific. TJ starting opposite George Karlaftis with Chris Jones (black, but still good) in the middle would be potent, and fun to watch.

Good to see that Scotty Miller is being mentioned as a contender for the WR2 spot. Austin, Woods and Wilson are nothing special so in a fair competition Miller would have a good shot. However with the Tomlin Steelers, will Scotty be seen as anything more than a depth receiver and special teamer?

Would be awesome to see Scotty get time for Pittsburgh this season!

This Steelers beat writer has Miller being cut. One of Miller or Skowronek should stick as a WSTD, but Miller as the number 2? Same odds as Hunter Luepke being Dallas' starting running back this season.

Yea, you are probably right. I was surprised when I read it myself. I guess the ESPN reporterette Brooke Pryor and Ray Fittipaldo are at odds with what they are hearing and / or seeing.

Here's to hoping Miller can have a huge preseason and carve out a valuable role.....

Austin is 160lbs. Doubt he stays healthy all year. Not that Miller is that much bigger lol.

Be nice if they kept Skowronek and Miller!! cut Woods! Ya still having one overachiever at WR for Pittsburgh ain’t too shabby, but I’d like both.

QB Will Howard will miss the rest of preseason with an injury to his hand. It sounds like he was starting to get comfortable in the offense. He wasn't going to play this year due to the presence of Rodgers and Rudolph but it helps get the reps in. Luckily it is not a major injury and he should be ready for the season.

There's already concern that rookie Kaleb Johnson, drafted to replace Najee Harris, may turn out to be slow-footed and lumbering just like Harris, who was allowed to sign with the Chargers (and promptly suffered an eye injury on the 4th of July that has kept him off the practice field since). But remember, with very few exceptions White men have been incapable of being capable running backs since that extinction event circa 1985.

Hallelujah!! Most of the national media mourns, while Pittsburgh DWFs cheer, and this is one time I'm right there with them!

A move six years overdue. The firing of John Harbaugh made this more likely. Lots of speculation about whether Tomlin was pushed in that direction by the noted invertebrate Art Rooney II, we may never know. At least he's finally gone.

Note: Keep posting in the 2025 team threads until the offseason begins after the playing of the Super Bowl.

Heard an interesting stat today -- of the Steelers last 12 first round picks, only one signed a second contract with the team (T. J. Watt). Although Tomlin wasn't officially the GM he had a lot of influence over who the team drafted during his endless reign. I really hope Tomlin continues coaching just so another team -- and the national media who adore him -- can see just how incompetent he is.

BTW, keep posting in the 2025 team threads until the post-season. I mentioned this two posts above.

Wow. That’s awful drafting. Maybe indicates that Tomlin is actually a good coach, just a terrible judge of talent.

A couple more articles with lots of praise for Will Howard, others can be found in the 2025 Steelers thread:

BTW, Mike Tomlin has seemingly dropped off the face of the earth since resigning. Won't be surprising if he eventually resurfaces complaining about all the non-existent "racism" he had to deal with.

Joey Porter Jr. doesn't like Big Ben.

Joey Porter is a thug who's always been protected by his black privilege. He was arrested for assault at a Pittsburgh bar in 2017 and charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and public drunkenness. He ended up pleading guilty to a summary offense of disorderly conduct and was fined, in other words nothing happened to him.

He was arrested in California in 2010. He also managed to get shot in the ass outside a Denver bar in 2003.

He ended up coaching for the Steelers and his best buddy was none other than Mike Tomlin. Makes you wonder if Tomlin had the same opinion of Roethlisberger but didn't say anything because Big Ben carried the team on his shoulders for many years, not only winning two Super Bowls but Tomlin's "never had a losing record" string would never have come close to happening without Big Ben.

This is a copy and paste from a post in the 2016 Steelers thread. At the time Porter was 38 years old and Tomlin was 44. Tomlin was always one of the boys and it's very likely other incidents like this were covered up due to his hallowed stature as the poster boy for the Rooney Rule.

Pros need to show respect in public

by John Steigerwald

You would think that most high school football programs would be thrilled to have a former Steeler as a head coach and the sons of the current head coach and one of his assistants as players, but, if there was a thrill for Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic, it’s gone now.

Jason Gildon, a former Steelers outside linebacker who held the franchise sack record until James Harrison broke it this season, was the head coach, and he was fired shortly after the season ended.

Soon after that, the sons of Mike Tomlin and outside linebackers coach Joey Porter, transferred. So did Porter’s nephew.

It’s safe to say that there aren’t many people in the North Catholic community who are sorry to see the parents go.

By all accounts, the kids weren’t the problem.

Joey Porter was a big problem.

He made a spectacle of himself at home and on the road, even though he was with his head coach at the time.

During a game at Riverside in October, Porter ran onto the field to badger the officials. Remember, he’s a Steelers assistant coach and only a North Catholic parent.

North Catholic was penalized 15 yards and the officials asked the North Sewickley police to remove Porter. According to eyewitnesses, Porter told the cops, “If you want me to leave it’s gonna take more than just you.”

The officers working the game had to call for extra help.

Porter finally calmed down when the referee threatened North Catholic with a forfeit.

Mike Tomlin was also at the game, but not involved in the disturbance. But Tomlin did, on at least one occasion, according to a witness, pay a visit to the North Catholic locker room and drop multiple F-bombs while trashing the officials.

And during a home game at J.C. Stone Field, Tomlin and Porter were less than cooperative with Allegheny County police when they were asked to move away from a fence where they were obstructing the view of some fans.

The game ended before the cops had to remove them.
