Payton Wilson is generating a lot of positive publicity, he could end up being the steal of this year's draft:

The Steelers' receiving depth is non-existent. George Pickens is the clear number one and he's talented, but he's also one of those selfish prima donnas with "character issues" Pittsburgh is so fond of drafting and it remains to be seen if he'll have a big year or not.

The rookie WR Roman Wilson has some kind of injury now, potentially serious. Other receivers on the roster include journeyman Van Jefferson, tiny Calvin Austin who caught just 17 passes in his rookie year, and the immortal Quez Watkins. Scotty Miller is also on the team but will need Hillis Curse type luck to have any role other than possibly as a kick returner.

Russell Wilson has been sidelined by some kind of calf injury, while the reports on Justin Fields are the same as they were in Chicago -- makes some good plays mixed with many not good ones. Wilson apparently hurt his calf while participating in a blocking sled drill, which has resulted in an instant firestorm of criticism that a 35 year old QB was forced to do that.

Steelers DWFs have been giddy ever since the team signed Wilson and Fields and jettisoned Kenny Pickett, but that's already beginning to fade as reality seeps in. I'm hoping the Steelers do something un-Steelers like and trade for Brandon Aiyuk, which would certainly make it more likely that Ricky Pearsall has a big role as a rookie for the 49ers.

I was reading how Kyle Allen was looking good. Noting that he was the “clear” #3 QB. Wilson is washed up and Fields is a slash. Allen may end up surfacing for us....

I figure that the chance of this happening are slim and none, and Slim just left town on the last stagecoach. No, if Wilson can't go because of his various ailments, Justin Fields will be the starter, period. Gotta give those Steeler fans hope and perhaps a return to the glory days of Kordell Stewart. :grazy:

Agreed. However, both Wilson and Fields are perpetually injured and the Steelers have a poor offensive line. They might be forced to turn to Allen at some point depending on how things go.

I dunno, Cam Newton and Tedy Bridgewater are still available I think. Josh Dobbs would be front-and-center choice but he went to the 49ers to be Brock Purdy's backup.

Looking forward to seeing Wilson on the field this season. An absolute beast with size/speed and productivity that overshadows most black LBs. It would be great to see a LB renaissance in the NFL as we have with the TE position. Guys like Wilson, Anderson, Chenal are among the best athletes at the position in the league. It’s asinine that he dropped to the third round.

Steelers signed WR Ben Skowronek to their practice squad. I somehow don't have high hopes.

The Steelers already have Scottie Miller, who they’ll likely give very few snaps to. No way they roster two White receivers no matter how bad the guys after Pickens are.

Wilson's lingering calf injury dates back to when he was asked to push a blocking sled during the team's first practice back in July lol. The team's DWFs have moved from being thrilled that Wilson was brought in to replace Kenny Pickett to something currently close to a panic state. The o-line looks as bad as ever and the team has journeymen at best at WR after George Pickens, who will likely be double-teamed regularly now. Pickens is a hothead prone to sideline temper tantrums so it's not looking good but it's always premature to draw too many conclusions based on the preseason.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Russell Wilson’s (calf) status is “firmly up in the air” for Week 1 against the Falcons.
Wilson was added to Thursday’s injury report as “limited” after practicing in full with no designation on Wednesday. Coach Mike Tomlin named Wilson the starter over Justin Fields near the end of training camp, but Wilson’s calf issue has evidently continued to linger even after he played through it during the preseason. What a mess. Whereas Wilson has zero fantasy value, Fields’ dual-threat would immediately put him in the low-end QB1 mix in fantasy. We should have a much better read on the situation 24 hours from now.

I listen to the talk shows all of the time. Almost all of them are thankful they have Wilsin and Fields than last years guys. Me, should’ve kept Mason and Kenny. Mitch backing up in Buffalo is ok.....This year is going to be a circus.

This long-time Pittsburgh sports writer believes Russell Wilson will lead the Steelers to 10 wins, while covering his ass by also writing that it might all fall apart this season. But overall he's a true believer, as these excerpts attest:

"Having said all that, 52% of me believes big-time in Russell Wilson. . .

"I think Wilson’s a winner. He operated with an inordinate amount of class last season when his obnoxious coach, Sean Payton, tried to break him. Payton even lowered himself to screaming in Wilson’s face on the sidelines. You don’t do that to a player of Wilson’s stature.

"I also believe that Wilson played good football for most of the year, despite what people like former Broncos lineman Mark Schlereth might say.

"I watched Wilson out-duel Josh Allen in Buffalo and beat the Bills, engineering two fourth-quarter drives built largely on ad-lib brilliance.

"I saw a guy who could still play despite a coach and an organization seemingly working against him. It also seems to me that Wilson has belied his prima donna, corporate image his whole career. He really isn’t that kind of quarterback. He’s a courageous, blood-and-guts battler who overcame his smallish stature and draft status (third round) to forge a Hall of Fame career.

"Maybe you didn’t see that guy in Denver last season. I did."

Talk about watching games with rose colored glasses! I once sent the author Joe Starkey a critical email after Peyton Manning retired and most of what he wrote, instead of recognizing a classy all-time great, revolved around the ridiculous accusation that he had "mooned" a female assistant while at Tennessee some 20 years earlier, a tall tale that was rebutted by a number of people while no one backed the feminist's side of the story. He replied with something nasty and then so did I, ending with calling him a beta incel who must still live in his mommy's attic.
