Peyton Hillis

I picked up Hillis off the waiver wire in four fantasy leagues. But of course not in the two leagues I'm in with fellow CFers -- white players are always at a premium in those leagues!

just saw on nfl network, peyton hillis is one of the rb's nominated for player of the week for fedex ground along with westbrook and deangelo williams, please go and vote for hillis everybody, maybe if he gets alot of votes people's perception of him will change http://www.nfl.com/fedex

I voted for him, I also watched the video and Hillis has a distinct advantage over black running backs, he doesn't follow the unspoken agreement that a half assed effort at a tackle by a black defensive back will result in a ball carrier crumbling to the ground.

On a couple of Peyton's long runs the DB's made their typical lazy effort at a tackle and threw themselves on the ground in front of him as he was running. Most times this results in the RB crashing to the ground so as to avoid more physical tackling by groups of defensive players. From what I say Hillis just plowed over the prone defensive players and continued on. I think the DB's are going to contact their union steward about Peyton.

I watched him against Oakland, and he knocked three or four Raiders out of the game, at least temporarily.

Funny thing, I was paging through some old threads to pass the time and I stumbled upon the John Riggins thread.

In it, Don makes a strangely Nostradomus-esque prediction:

At this point, it's going to take almost a white superman to break down the decades-long ban on starting white tailbacks. Someone at least as big and powerful as Riggins, Staley and Konrad but faster, quicker and with great elusiveness, basically a power back with the moves and speed of a great scatback. Someone who gets to start at a I-A school and smashes all kinds of records, someone who is obviously a man among boys.

Sounds a little like Peyton, eh?

I don't think that Peyton meets all those criteria, as he wasn't even a career long starter at HB at Arkansas. He did set records for a RB for catches and receiving yardage, and he has done great things so far at Denver, catching and running the ball. I hope he does emerge as a Caste-buster. I won't hold my breath though. I don't have any faith in any NFL coach giving a whiteRB/WR/DB a fair chance.

Yeah, great point, it very rarely has to do with ability of the white skill player...it's always the same old story, "fair chance from the coach."

BTW, nice find, PhillyBirds, you're quickly becoming a rising star (like Hillis) at CF! Keep it up, man.

Watching Hillis (and rookie LB Spencer Larsen) play the last few weeks has renewed my interest in the football season. The fact he's been starting on my fantasy team for the last 3 weeks has only made it sweeter. He really looked great against the Jets. I'm crossing my fingers that this Hillis experiment lasts through the playoffs and into the forseeable future. I think he's already won over a lot of the Denver faithful. He just has too many dimensions (receiving, power running, pass protection) to not be getting tons of snaps.

Don was spot on with his post with the exception that Hillis was not really a star at Arkansas. I think that worked in his favor though. If he had come through more highly touted like Hester and Leonard they would've been ready to shoot him down right away but Peyton got to hide on the depth chart until attrition gave him a chance and he's making the most of it.

Peyton won a rookie of the week award and he also won (along with Cutler) FedEx Air & Ground Player of the Week!

Voters on NFL.com and via Sprint wireless service have made their choice. Broncos Fullback Peyton Hillis is the Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week for games played on November 27-December 1, the NFL announced Friday.

Hillis totaled 129 rushing yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts in the Broncos' 34-17 win against the New York Jets.

Hillis was selected from among five finalists through fan votes on NFL.com/rookies and via Sprint wireless service. The other finalists were quarterback Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens, running back Chris Johnson of the Tennessee Titans, quarterback Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons and running back Steve Slaton of the Houston Texans.
