This was reported after the Broncos' practice today:

Bronco RB Selvin Young (groin) didn't practice Wednesday and is considered doubtful to play. Rookie FB Peyton Hillis saw a lot of work with the first-team offense Thursday. That's a good indication that he could see more than half the carries Sunday. We'll know more after Friday's practice.

Tatum Bell probably reported 20 pounds overweight and with the stamina of an elderly woman. Man I hope the Broncos' line (3 whites 2 blacks) opens up some nice holes for Peyton on Sunday.

"rookie FB" is it that hard to call the guy a "RB"?? And he's only going to gethalf the carries?? Who's going to get the rest? I also can't believe Tatum Bell showed up on a roster after the way he left the Lions. The lengths an NFL team will go to prevent a white guy from running the football is amazing.

now Shanahan changed his tune saying he is surprised with how good of a shape Bell is in... don't expect Hillis to get more than 10 carries, and big backs like Peyton need more than that... it is possible that Broncos jump to a lead though, in which case he might get enough carries to wear out the defense and show his skill. they also need to throw to him a lot!

Did Spencer Larson get to lead block for Peyton or did they line Peyton up in a single set backfield again? Peyton is the type of running back that needs 20 carries and a lead FB in front of him to be most effective! He only got 10 carries this game, but had a solid 4.4 YPC. Did Peyton at least have his lead FB in front of him?

The AP article on ESPN's site on the Denver-Atlanta game -- which is the article that will run in newspapers across the country tomorrow -- doesn't even mention that Hillis scored two touchdowns. His first mention is toward the end of the article, when he's lumped in with Tatum Bell and P. J. Pope: "Coming off a 447-yard effort against Cleveland, Cutler completed 19 of 27 passes for 216 yards. Peyton Hillis, P.J. Pope and Bell combined for 113 yards rushing on 21 carries."

Even further along Hillis' two yard TD run is mentioned, but the fact that he scored twice somehow escaped the writer's attention asa relevantdetail. Any time a running back scores two of his team's three touchdowns, it's prominently mentioned in a detailed recap of a game. It should be even more of a story given how Hillis is the "fullback" who was pressed into duty as the main ball carrier.

Don, You are so right. A black rookie 7th round pick fullback pressed into service at TB scoring 2 touchdowns - one from 7 yards out at 100mph knocking off his helmet in theprocess - would get more than a mention. I am thinking hollywood movie.

<H1 =articleTitle id=articleTitle>It's finally coming around for Hillis</H1>
<DIV =articleSubTitle id=articleSubTitle>A tailback early in his college career, he's back at that spot for the Broncos.
<DIV =articleSubTitle>
<DIV =articleSubTitle>

One tailback from the University of Arkansas heard his name called with the No. 4 overall pick in the NFL draft last April.

Another Razorback back had to wait until No. 227, midway through the final round of the draft.

Darren McFadden, the Oakland Raiders' first-round pick, signed a massive contract with a signing bonus worth tens of millions of dollars; the Broncos' Peyton Hillis quietly signed a deal that included a bonus of just less than $50,000.

Yet when NFL games kicked off last Sunday, it was Hillis, not McFadden, who was starting at tailback for his team. It likely will be the case again Sunday when McFadden's Raiders face Hillis' Broncos at Invesco Field at Mile High.

"I always like to keep my expectations high, but I'd be lying â€â€￾ I never expected this," Hillis said.

The irony of the situation was not lost on McFadden and fellow former Arkansas tailback Felix Jones, another first-round pick last April, by Dallas at No. 22 overall.

"It's something that we'll crack jokes on, like, 'Hey, Peyton is starting, and us two guys aren't,' " McFadden said Wednesday.

McFadden and Jones have battled injuries throughout their rookie seasons. McFadden was so bothered by turf toe he had to sit out three games. Jones partially tore his hamstring and has missed the last four games. McFadden returned last week at Miami and had three carries for 13 yards while backing up Justin Fargas. He said Wednesday he's feeling better. Jones was back at practice for the Cowboys on Wednesday and could return Sunday.

So while the stars he blocked for in college have been ailing, Hillis has returned to the spotlight, a place he remembers from his days as a Conway (Ark.) High School standout and as a freshman for the Razorbacks, when he scored eight touchdowns in 2004.

McFadden and Jones arrived in 2005, and Hillis was moved to fullback. He made his last start at tailback that fall in the team's second game, against Vanderbilt.

Hillis did not hide his frustration, and at one point even told reporters he wanted to move to linebacker.

"Peyton was mad at us for a while for not being able to play tailback, but we knew his position would be as an H-back in the professional ranks," said former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt, who is now at Ole Miss. "When you've been playing tailback since pee-wee ball, it's a very big difference, but what gave us the best chance to win was to have Darren, Felix and Peyton at their best positions."

Last fall, the final season at Arkansas for all three players, McFadden and Jones rushed for more than 1,000 yards with Hillis as their lead blocker. Hillis, who has been described by Nutt and Broncos coach Mike Shanahan as having the "best hands" on his team, was the Razorbacks' leading receiver.

"It was a pretty rough transition for me," Hillis said of his reduced role in the running game at Arkansas, "but the real players have to step up and do the best they can and play where they get put at."

How Hillis ended up as Denver's starting running back has been well-documented: a groin injury to Selvin Young, then season-ending injuries to Michael Pittman, Andre Hall and Ryan Torain forced coaches to move their fullback to tailback.

He has played well enough in his two opportunities to stay there, for now. Sharing carries with P.J. Pope and Tatum Bell last week against the Falcons, Hillis had 44 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. He also scored a receiving touchdown against Miami on Nov. 2.

"Obviously he has been very effective the last couple of weeks, and hopefully he can do it again this week," quarterback Jay Cutler said.

Tell us Houston, exactly how you "knew he would be an H-back"?

I don't like the writers tone either, with her "for now."

Man these people make me mad!!!!!!

another article about Peyton.

It's only fitting a Broncos class that is as much blue-collar as blue-chip would include Hillis, who still could be spotted in his scouting combine sweat shirt this week.

He was drafted No. 227 out of Arkansas, and after serving mostly as a blocking back early in the season, he busted out with seven catches for 116 yards and a touchdown against Miami, then took over the tailback job two weeks ago.

It hasn't changed his good ol' boy manners or mannerisms.

He still says "yes, ma'am" and "no, sir," with a bunch of daggumits and goll-lees in between.

"When he first got here, I thought he was doing impressions of someone," cornerback Karl Paymah said. "Then one time in the training room, I heard him talk, and I'm like, 'Man, you really talk like that.' It's just him, who he is. Snakeskin boots, big belt. That's how he do it."

Friends from Arkansas can attest.

Before the big showdown against top- ranked Louisiana State last year, Hillis asked his coach if he could ride home with his parents afterward.

He did, even though he ended up scoring four touchdowns in the Razorbacks' 50-48 triple-overtime upset.

"It was duck and deer hunting season," Arkansas running backs coach Tim Horton said. "He wasn't about to let some celebration get in the way."

They don't get much more country than Hillis.

If he keeps doing it, the avid hunter might have some more game balls to display along with the 10-point deer he has mounted on his apartment wall.

"He's a big dude," injured running back Michael Pittman said of Hillis, not the deer. "You can tell he wants to do everything right. He's got a good heart, is a good person and is very coachable.
To me, he's like (former Tampa Bay teammate) Mike Alstott, actually a little faster than Mike. He could be a household name in this league because he has some of the best hands I've ever seen."

* PEYTON HILLIS, fullback/running back

The lowdown: Seventh-round pick started at fullback early in season, then took over as starting running back in second half against Cleveland. His seven catches for 116 yards against Miami were most by a back since Floyd Little in 1974. Three touchdowns in past three games.

The rookie wall: "Everybody has aches and pains. Nothing real serious."

Biggest surprise: "All the running backs getting hurt."

Ahh, 'blue collar,' I wonder why they would use that term for a white athelte? Probably just a coincidence.

blue collar = high motor = lunch pail guy = overacheiver = blah, blah, blah

They're all just simpleton code words for you-know-what. It really is facsinating that the caste system is even evolving new lauguage and technical jargon.

isn't it "funny" how none of these "reporters" mention in their "news" stories that Peyton Hillis, at 6-2, 250-pounds, is FASTER than one of the greatest Denver Broncos tailbacks of all time: terrell davis?

that's right, 5-11, 210-pound terrell davis was SLOWER than Hillis.

hmmm... kinda makes you wonder what the difference is in these two players that would make the bigger, faster, stronger athlete into a blocker instead of a featured ball carrier, doesn't it?

They even talk about his accent. I haven't read every article about every black player ever to be written, but of the many I have read, I have yet to see any of them talk about ebonics, and 'that's just how he talk, man.'

An extremely good point and well-spoken. Emmitt Smith had to commit genocide on the alphabet before he was even criticized in the MSM even in the slightest, and I think he still has his old job, just in a decreased role. Hillis gets joked out because he says "please" or calls his elders "ma'am".

The annoncers even admitted that Hillis at 250lbs has 4.5 sppeed in the 40. I bet that surprised a few people who were listening that just is'nt supposed to be the case no white running back should be allowed to be that big and run that fast. Some body in his family tree has to be black lol.

plus BEll had a terrible game. his only real rival from now on might be Young when he comes back. too bad tha game didn't go as expected because then we'd easily see Peyton break 100 yards.

Perpetually injured rookie running back Ryan Torain showed some class when he said of Hillis: "Peyton is doing big things and I'm happy the rookie class is stepping up like that, all over the field."

Good for Torain.

You know, it seems as though these NFL offensive coordinators and coaches don't know what they are doing. Denver seemed to totally change their gameplan once the score was 10-3 in favor of the Iggles, and they never had any rhythm after that. It really baffles me sometimes.

Another thing about the whole accent deal with Peyton Hillis, is that being from the Deep South, when I am out of the area and talk to older folks using the usual yes sir, no ma'am, etc., I find that theyalmost never hear polite speech.

Some people ask me "are you from the South or the military." What a shame it is that this anti-Southern bias still exists, as shown in this article. No offense to any Yankees here at CF, but I guess I should just go around and beimpoliteand loudso people won't put me down because of my background and raising. Edited by: Colonel_Reb

Broncos just signed a fullback, might be a sign of Spencer getting a fulltime defensive spot and Peyton staying at a tailback!

from rotoworld.com:

Broncos signed RB/FB Andrew Pinnock, formerly of the Chargers.

Pinnock is likely being added so that Spencer Larsen can focus on being a linebacker and Peyton Hillis a tailback.

on another hand, Young is getting close to coming back from the injury, we'll see what split will look like. Pope and Bell are still in the mix...
