Now the Red Sox are too white

These articles just keep getting more ridiculous...

The Red Sox look very white.

The trade of left fielder Manny Ramirez and loss of shortstop Julio Lugo to injury left the Sox with a predominantly Caucasian roster.

Why bring this up now, with the Red Sox in the American League Championship Series? Well, the free-agent market will open in about a month. The makeup of the Red Sox's roster could be a concern for players they pursue, whether it's this offseason or in the future.

Of the Red Sox's current players in the ALCS, the only African- American is outfielder Coco Crisp.

The only Latin Americans are designated hitter David Ortiz, who is from the Dominican Republic, and utility infielder Alex Cora and reliever Javier Lopez, both of whom are from Puerto Rico.

Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury is Native American. Pitchers Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima are from Japan. Reliever Manny Delcarmen is of Dominican descent, and injured third baseman Mike Lowell was born to Cuban parents in Puerto Rico.

The Sox's composition is surprising in an era in which rosters are more diverse than at any point in the game's history, even as the number of African-American players continues to decline.

Of the other remaining teams in the postseason, the Phillies feature a similar number of non-white players, but two of their biggest stars  first baseman Ryan Howard and shortstop Jimmy Rollins  are African- American.

The Dodgers' postseason roster is more than 50 percent non-white, and the Rays' percentage is nearly as high. Both of those clubs feature a number of prominent young African-Americans.

The Red Sox's sudden abundance of white players, though, appears nothing more than a coincidence, a fluky snapshot in time.

"Our player-personnel decision making is completely color-blind and always will be," Sox general manager Theo Epstein says.

I don't doubt him, but if the Sox's roster struck me as odd, I can't help but think that prospective free agents will think it's odd, too.

If not for the Red Sox's past, if not for Boston's reputation, the issue might not be even worth raising.

But the Sox carry a special burden.

They have a shameful history of discrimination, one that their present ownership group has tried to address. And a perception has long existed among some African-American athletes that Boston is hostile to players who are not white.

The question is not whether the Red Sox are turning away from blacks and Latins; in recent years, they have parted not only with high- profile Dominican stars such as Ramirez and pitcher Pedro Martinez, but also high-profile white players such as outfielder Johnny Damon and pitcher Derek Lowe.

The question is whether the Red Sox will lose players they want because of the makeup of their club, the perception of the city or both. Players generally seek comfort as well as money when they make career decisions.

The Sox, with few needs, do not figure to be terribly active in free agency this off-season. They almost certainly will show interest in pitcher CC Sabathia, an African-American, but probably not in the few other top non-white free agents  closer Francisco Rodriguez, second baseman Orlando Hudson, shortstop Rafael Furcal and outfielder Bobby Abreu.

Still, the Red Sox could be even more homogenous next season if they trade Crisp and Lugo. You never know when they might need a particular player  either one on the open market or one with a no-trade clause  in 2009, 2010 or beyond.

Sabathia, the top pitcher on this year's market, would not necessarily reject the Red Sox because the team lacks African-Americans; he was perfectly comfortable with the Indians, who had a similar mix during his tenure in Cleveland.

Would a player like CC Sabathia hold the Red Sox's past against them? (Jonathan Daniel / Getty Images)

Then again, Sabathia might prefer to join a team with a greater number of black players or live in a different city. He became good friends with veteran outfielder Mike Cameron in Milwaukee. The Brewers, who feature a sizable contingent of African-Americans, were an unusually close team.

The Red Sox, who have drafted African-Americans with their second pick in each of the past two drafts, are not the only team with a shortage of black players: Only 8.2 percent of major leaguers in 2007 were African-American, according to Richard Lapchick, the director of the University of Central Florida's Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports. That percentage is the lowest in the two decades that Lapchick has conducted his survey, and less than half than what it was 10 years ago.

Latinos comprise a far higher percentage of major leaguers. Several of the Red Sox's top prospects are from Latin America, and the team signed Lugo to a four-year, $36 million free-agent contract after the 2006 season. The Sox won the '07 World Series with Lugo at short.

Since then, they've signed first baseman Sean Casey as a free agent and traded for outfielder Jason Bay, pitcher Paul Byrd and outfielder Mark Kotsay  all white players. Bartolo Colon, a Dominican who joined the club as a minor-league free agent, did not last.

Also this season, the Sox have added two more white prospects  shortstop Jed Lowrie, who got his chance when Lugo went down with a strained left quad, and reliever Justin Masterson  to a group that already included first baseman Kevin Youkilis, second baseman Dustin Pedroia, closer Jonathan Papelbon and left-hander Jon Lester.

Youkilis, Papelbon and Pedroia are All-Stars, while Lester already has thrown a no-hitter and won a World Series clincher. Not even the most skeptical observer could argue with the Sox's motives in advancing those players. Their trade of Hanley Ramirez, a Dominican shortstop who became a star, for right-hander Josh Beckett, a white pitcher who became an ace, also made perfect sense.

Your thoughts?
Ken Rosenthal wonders if a predominantly Caucasian roster and a city with a checkered past where race is concerned will keep non-white free agents from signing with the Red Sox. But what do you think?

Clearly, this is not the same franchise that passed on Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays before becoming the last club to integrate in 1959, 12 years after Robinson's debut. The Red Sox did not sign an African- American free agent until 1993, and their failure to win a World Series for 86 years was due in part to their racial practices.

All that changed after a group led by John Henry purchased the team in 2002. The Sox established diversity and community-outreach programs, and the team's message of inclusion extends to the clubhouse, where manager Terry Francona fosters a diverse, tolerant environment. The Sox's 2004 World Series championship team was an exuberant mishmash of cultures and personalities.

Boston, once derided by former Celtics great Bill Russell as "a flea market of racism," also has come a long way. Ortiz, the Celtics' Kevin Garnett and Patriots' Randy Moss are among the city's most popular stars, as was Ramirez.

To some, though, the perception of the city is still negative. In 2004, Barry Bonds said he would not play in Boston because it was "too racist." In '07, Angels outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. said Boston was "one of the few places you'll hear racial comments."

The Ramirez blockbuster was not about race; it was about money. Ramirez acted out when the Sox would not trade him or allow him to become a free agent. He pushed down the team's traveling secretary, Jack McCormick, 64. His manager and teammates no longer could trust him to play every day.

Yet, fairly or not, Ramirez's messy divorce with the Red Sox could raise suspicions that the team prefers a certain type of player  unassuming, conformist, white. The current makeup of the team's roster might create similar notions, even as the Red Sox say that nothing could be further from the truth.

The Sox's agenda is winning. They would be foolish to start acquiring mediocre non-white players to achieve greater racial balance. But frankly, my opinion doesn't matter. The players with choices will decide.

Yes, this has to be the silliest one yet. Butthe hypocrisy and double standards arealso enraging. I tried to write a comment but you have to have an account and I don't want one with Fox Sports. People should realize that Fox is run by neo-conservatives, who are not in any way, shape or form "conservative." An anti-white agenda in sports is part and parcel of the neo-cons' overall agenda for America.

No such articles on the Angels nearly all-black starting lineup.

Must be white skin privilege.

As I wrote on another thread, this is an old story. I can't tell you how many times I have seen writers refer to Boston's "racist fans," which causes the Red Sox and (during the 1980's) the Celtics, to load their rosters with white players.

The 1970's Busing riots are often referred to. Another theme is that Boston fans prefer white stars like Havlicek, Yazstremski, and Larry Bird. Black stars on Boston teams, such as Bill Russell, are "unappreciated." Sportswriters in and out of Boston have beaten their breasts on this topic for decades.

set aside the alleged "truth" of "racist" Boston for a moment and consider the bigger problem here.

Boston has a winning team, yet that is irrelevant.

the Red Sox are winning despite their "deplorable" lack of blacks, yet the author would prefer more blacks even if it meant losing. this is truly another brain-dead manifestation of the Caste System.

Just the level of underlining hypocrisy in these articles blows me away... And they seem to be getting more brazen lately. But judging from the majority of posts on this article's page, I think the DWFs are possibly starting to see through the double standards, or at least questioning this BS. (I hope).

I wondered earlier where the articles were at. Now here they come. It probably is just the start of the "Boston is too white" tirade. This will give them an excuse to have a "good discourse" on the problem, and soon, just like Houston, Boston will load up on black and hispanic players. Jeez.

They talk about these figures but they never mention that blacks only make up about 16-17% of the population. Yet they usually dominate the rosters of all sports teams. Like others on here, I wonder when oh when will they bemoan the lack of whites in sports.

If you think they are more brazen now, wait till Obama gets elected. You will think we are living in Africa then. No whites on tv, sports or at jobs. Its coming.

I have a suggestion for this idiot writer. How about he live in an entirely black neighborhood for a year and have his kids go to school with them. If he is still alive or hasn't suffered from bodily harm then he can tell us all about his wonderful experience and his children's as well.

"Separation or extinction."

The Boston Red Sox are "too white".

Yeah, well Hollywood is "too Jewish".

The Steelers are "too black".

Congress has "too many women".

Los Angeles is "too Mexican".

Out of all these statements, only one is acceptable to the media.

I wonder which one?

This article is agreat rebuttal to those that argue that there isn't any affirmative action or racial manipulation in sports because in sports the only thing that counts is winning. But it's not about winning, it's about having a politically correct racial mix on the team in baseball, football and basketball. An all or mostly non-white team is always acceptable whether it wins or loses. But a mostly white team is always unacceptable even when, in the case of the Red Sox, it's the defending world champion. Ditto the NL champion Astros a few years ago. There's not an owner, GM or manager who isn't aware of this, the same with college football and basketball coaches and recruiters.

A great comment from the comments section:

"I think Ken should be replaced by fox sports with a black writer"

Nuff said... Classic! "Pack your bags Ken, FOX needs more African-Americans. You are just TOO White!"

Amen Don. I'm under the firm belief that a lot of the super-elite corporations who now own these major league teams would rather just "do well" and please the masses with a diverse team, rather than "win it all" with a predominantly White one. I can list oodles of predominantly minority ridden sports teams (from almost all sports) that either don't win regualarly, or just plain lose miserably.

The Arizona Cardinals of the last few seasons...almost all black, and arguably THE worst team in the NFL for a number of years.

The Saints fell into the same category a few seasons back as well, until the team "magically" got "Whiter" and actually starting winning. Surprise surprise.

What about those 1-16 (I think) Miami Dolphins from last season. 11 Whites on the roster, I beleive. Pitiful.

And lets not forget "Africa's Team"...the Jax Jaguars from a few seasons ago. Another team with like 10 White guys on the roster, that stunk up the field miserably. Good ol' Black Jack Del Rio embarrassing himself once again by putting crappy black QB's on the field over and over and over...

And thats just football, now on to basketball. Remember how bad the Knicks were a season or two ago? They had like one White guy on their team, and he almost never played. That team finished at or near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

In soccer, those frog-humping schmucks over in France thought it would be a good idea to load up thier team with Africans, only to lose to an all-White Italian team in the World Cup. Guess the joke was on you France.

Hopefully the "diversity" trend won't favor well in hockey. The elites have been desperatley trying to destroy my favorite sport for years, but have been unsuccessful for the most part. Every now and again, a non-White player will pop up, but I'll be a long time, if ever, that we see hockey go the way of the NFL and NBA.

The hatred toward Boston as a "racist" city goes back to the mid-1970s when working class whites fought strongly against forced busing for several years. Just about the entire country by that time had capitulated to the radical revolutions started in the late '60s; Boston was one of the last holdouts. When whites organize and stand up against the powers that be they earn their eternal enmity in return. Think Jimmy the Greek and Al Campanis except on a city-wide scale. Just another indicator of the never forgive never forget attitude the system operates by when it comes to white survival.

If a professional sports team were completely black (with the exception of basketball, where it already happens a lot) I think people really would start to scratch their heads and ask questions, but for the most part I think the powers that be retain just enough whites on any team or in any sports league league so that the uninformed masses in America will be bamboozled into thinking there's at least some modicum of fairness in roster selection.

It all comes back to the ironically racist believe held by those who supposedly aren't racist, that only whites are capable of racism. Or rather, the racist belief that, though all groups are capable of racism, only whites have the financial and institutional advantages to use their racism to inflict harm upon others.

Some blacks have gained a lot of respect from the white Boston/Massachusetts fan base. Troy Brown and David Ortiz come to mind. The Sox really should trade Crisp.

The guy once charged the mound after getting hit with a curve ball!

Watch out though. The media lead by Caste Whore and wife beating advocate Bob Ryan will surely point out David Price's natural superior athleticism based on a couple of good innings, and how the Red Sox will need more fast twitch muscle fiber to hit his pitches.

The "racially aware" people are really going to have a problem with the Red Sox now. The closest guys they have for blacks on their team are David Ortiz, and Ramon Ramirez. They will also probably release or trade Lugo shortly. Tonight against the Blue Jays, 8 out of 9 players in their lineup were white, also Buchholz was starting for them tonight too. Most of their pitchers and relievers are white. They also have Dice-K and Okajima. (They are better than black pitchers.) They also have Jacoby Ellsbury. Hopefully, this team will win the world series with their majority white roster.

Lugo Release Likely

Jacoby Ellsbury is at least 50% white, and also Native American. His father looks pretty white to me.

living in new england and going to boston a fair amount i can say that boston is in fact a racist city. However it is not a white on black problem, but more of a black on white problem. I remember one time i was walking through the subway and there was a black guy who wanted to give me some sort flier with information about an event going on in Roxbury. (a very black neighborhood in boston) anyway i kept walking because i dont stop for those types of things and as i was walking away he said "oh sorry, i dont want you to be late for your klan meeting" and that really pissed me off. i walked back up to him and said "you better call al sharpton because i didnt accept your flier." he had this look on his face that said "wow did a white guy really just stand up to me?" and i walked off.

I love it. Boston got whiter today. They traded one hispanic to St. Louis for white outfielder Chris Duncan and then an hispanic shortstop to Pittsburgh for white first baseman Adam LaRoche.

Even though I am a Pirates fan of many many years, I say....GO RED SOX

The Red Sox got a little darker at the trade deadline, trading for hispanic catcher Victor Martinez. The Sox also traded Adam LaRoche to the Braves for 1B Casey Kotchman.
