As the receivers dropped ball after ball during the Pitt-Cincy game tonight, Cris Collinsworth

came up with a classic, speculating that a drop by Hines Ward was caused by a snowflake going in his eye, temporarily blinding him.

During a rainy game a couple of years ago, Collinsworth excused the drop-a-thon taking place by saying that they were caused by the receivers' "slimy arms."

Do you think Collinsworth was being serious? In other words, was he making excuses for poor WR play out of an unwillingness to criticize? Or was Collinsworth mocking Hines Ward?

He wasn't mocking Ward. It was just Cris being Cris. He will on occasion criticize things like a drop or a poor play or a lack of fundamentals, but it's always countered by lots of lavish Caste-based praise.

For example, he was really talking up LB Lawrence Timmons at one point, predicting imminent greatness for him, when by any objective criteria Timmons, a first round draft pick in '07, has been a bust so far. (If only Bobby Carpenter would geta thirdas much playing time to establish himself as Timmons receives.) He was raving about what great games Steelers linebackers James Harrison and Lamar Woodley were having, when all Harrison had was 2 tackles and an assist, and Woodley had a sack but no other solo tackles for the entire game. At one point Bengals LB Brandon Johnson ran through a huge opening and tackled Willie Parker, which caused Collinsworth to wax poetic about the mediocre Johnson's speed and athleticism.

Collinsworth is sharp but he's a Caste hound through and through. Edited by: Don Wassall

They also seemingly wasted a 3rd round pick this year on LB Bruce Davis-an athletic "freak of nature" type-that can't even find a spot on the active roster on gameday.

Did anyone bother to ask if these guys can play football? Or did they just get all hot and bothered after seeing them in their jockstraps at the NFL Combine?

I watched some of the same so-called athletic freaks play pathetic defense for Miami all night in the Georgia Tech-Miami game a few hours ago.

Meanwhile, undrafted white rookie LB Patrick Bailey out of Duke continues to impress as a budding White Special Teams Demon for the Steelers.

On another thread, i wrote about Cris Collinsworth being a big media favorite starting in his rookie year of 1981. Cris had two things going for him.

One, he was articulate (Collinworth would graduate from law school) and quotable. Many of the players whom it was fashionable to praise would either blow off writers or have little to say if they did talk. Two, Cris was obviously intelligent. A little secret was that many writers liked a smart football player. They could see themselves in him.

By the late 1980's, a player no longer needed to court the press to be highly popular. A name player could make millions of dollars in TV endorsements without speaking a word to the writers covering the team.

I recall a magazine article about Bo Jackson that described Bo as the Second Coming. Toward the end of the piece, Bo was called a "grouch." It seemed that he did not talk to the writers. Bo gave interviews on TV, but not to the print press. He did not have to.

Collinsworth is even caste when it comes to mocking his own career, let alone what he says about "his" fellow white players.

Collinsworth is so "smart" that he doesnt even know how cliched and boring and typical he sounds on air. Mr. Lawyer (the most PC wimps on planet earth) has bought the caste system in every way possible.

However, Don's correct, sometimes he'll make up endless excuses for dropped passes, missed tackles, buffoonish fouls....then the next game he'll rip certain black players and all-black teams to no end. My diagnosis of Collinsworth is either....

1) He's a real weirdo.
2) His caste network bosses give him lists of black players, teams, and coaches which are off limits for any of his insults.

He's particulalry c*cky on the Caste-Mecca, "Football Night in America," where he smirks and laughs and jokes next to super-liberal girlies like Keith Olbermann.Edited by: Thrashen

Collinsworth is a jerk, but he does actually do his job and occasionally point out interesting things on the field. He's probably the best commentator that I ever happen to see.

One time he was commentating on a Thanksgiving Day game and another commentator (Aikman?) held up the statue of the turkey (to be awarded to winner) next to his face. It was almost identical to him. I laugh every time I think of it.

Another funny thing about Collinsworth is how hard he strives to distance himself from kickers/punters by his slights toward them. It's so obvious that he's only doing it because his features and build are so typical of a kicker/punter, and he's afraid to have his career misidentified.
