Lions acquired QB Jared Goff, a 2021 third-round pick, 2022 first-round pick and 2023 first-round pick from the Rams in exchange for QB Matthew Stafford.

A rare big blockbuster trade. My initial feeling is the Rams gave up far too much. If Goff can bounce back, the trade could be totally one sided with all those picks.
In the salary cap era trades like this never happen, but both players are roughly making similar money.

This will be interesting because if Goff can be what he was in the SB run for the Rams then it's a steal for the Lions as he is a good deal younger than Stafford and hasn't had the injuries that Stafford has piled up lately.

PS you can't say McVay isn't a gambler as he jettisoned Gurley the minute he looked shot and now this gamble a more conservative coach would have gone back to the drawing board with Goff.

The Rams got fleeced - they gave away a young franchise caliber QB for Stafford who has been a gritty, good QB on a bad franchise for many years but is also 33 years old.

My guess is the Rams think that they have a 2-3 year window with their defense in place and offensive playmakers. I don't believe Goff was holding them back but they just went all in on Stafford. Stafford has been beat to hell in Detroit but managed to be a very good QB. Goff is only a few years removed from a super bowl appearance. The Rams have to win the Super Bowl in the next couple of seasons or this trade blows up in their face. Detroit looks like a real winner here. Hopefully Goff and Stafford both have success.

I strongly dislike the Rams team building approach, with their reckless contracts and discarding of draft picks. Looks like there going to have around 5 great players, and 40+ replacement level players. I think the Rams playoff season last year was a fluke, with the 49ers down year being a big reason. Poor Matthew Stafford may have been better off staying in Detroit.

The Lions will be interesting to watch from a racial perspective. Dan Campbell looks like an old school white alpha male on the surface, and he'll be working with a black GM, OC, and DC.

Overall, the Lions look like big winners. Campbell got a 6 year contract, a good indication that ownership will be patient, so eating Goff's huge guaranteed money the next two years will be easy. Goff could even be a viable long time starter, though Anthony Lynn at OC is a very questionable hire.

The Rams have traded away alot of draft capital - I just read that the last 1st round pick they did not trade away was for Goff in 2016. They should be expected to dominate the NFC West for the next few years based on this trade - Snead and McVay clearly believe that Goff was what was holding the team back and Stafford is going to be the cure for what ails them. Expectations and hype will be through the roof and the pressure will be on McVay to deliver a super bowl. The NFC West with the 49ers and Pete's Plantation is a competitive division. Winning the division each year will be necessary for McVay and Snead not to look like complete fools. I do think the Rams are a solid team though and they have impact white playmakers on offense and defense. Whitworth is 39 and may retire, return to the Rams or play elsewhere.

I hope that landing in Detroit is a clean start for Goff. Rooting for him as he has never garnered the respect he deserves since entering the league. Mark Brunell is the QB coach in Detroit as well.

I like Goff better than Stafford anyways. The Rams gave up a ton for a middle of the pack at best QB. I wonder if Goff has some screwed up thing medically or life problems type thing?

Stafford knows the clock is ticking on him. He has the talent to win a Super Bowl ring and knew he probably wasn't going to get it in Detroit. He was right to jump ship, but jumping to the Rams is questionable.

As for the Rams, they never should have given up one first-round pick in that deal, let alone two. Honestly, Goff + a third-rounder for Stafford would have been fair.

This could be one of those rare times in their franchises history, that the Lions made a great trade. A young franchise QB plus all those picks should really jump start their rebuild. Hopefully Hockenson takes the next step and the Lions bring back Amendola. Drafting someone, like Dax Milne, would also be a wise move.

This is ridiculous. Only the J-E-T-S are supposed to make trades of this magnitude of stupidity as the Rams just did. Maybe J-E-T-S ism is spreading through the league. There should be a vaccine developed to protect any more GM's from catching J-E-T-S fever and they must be forced to be inoculated against the plague of stupidity before it spreads throughout the league.

Give them time - They still have the ability to make an even worse trade for the crybaby quota Watson

I agree with the consensus that the Lions got the better of the deal, especially with Goff being so much younger than Stafford and already leading a team to the Super Bowl. The draft picks alone make it a steal, now we'll see how the respective QBs fare with their new teams, hopefully both excel in new environments.

The Lions organization has been an NFL bottom feeder for literally generations, but one thing they did have in recent years was a good offensive line. Not sure how it stacked up in '20, but that's a ray of hope as Goff will always be a QB that needs time to scan the field and throw. He's never gonna be a scrambler, but that's ok as long as a team plays into his strengths as very few QBs can throw an accurate ball as well as he can.

This Weenieworld blurb shows how sour things became between Goff and McVay:

Jared Goff said he's "excited to be somewhere that I know wants me and appreciates me."
Goff's relationship with Rams head coach Sean McVay was clearly broken beyond repair. McVay repeatedly refused to endorse Goff as the team's 2021 starter, taking the extraordinary (and some would say unnecessary) step of talking up John Wolford as a legitimate starting option for LA. Now a Lion, Goff will probably be the team's starter for the next season or two if he can manage not to completely collapse in a far inferior offense. Goff in Detroit profiles as a borderline streaming option for fantasy purposes.

I’ll miss my boy Stafford but I can’t believe the haul they got for him. And Goff! I really hope Stafford has success in LA. He’s a great guy and a good QB.

Poor Goff. Another victim to the slaughter by Lions.

Don’t worry, the Dolphins will have them beat when they trade away Tua (who’s on a cheap rookie contract) and a sh*t ton of picks for Mr Unlimited Upside Deshaun Watson. They’ll then build a new stadium in the Liberty City section of Miami and be re-christened as the Liberty City Dolphins.

The Hock agrees. This is a George Allen "future is now" deal for the Rams. If Stafford isn't a difference maker Rams coach and GM are goners. If Goff bombs the Lions still have the draft picks. Which, being the Lions, they stand a good chance of wasting.

Either way a real attention getter.

My memory is hazy but I believe I had a distant relative who lived in that area, but kind of got stuck there because his wife became a big time pro life supporter and what money they had went poof into the political hucksters' pockets.

I'm OK with this 'win now' mode from Rams.

Donald wants a ring, and so do those veteran OL, Kupp is in his peak, you can sense that they
don't think Goff is going to win Super Bowl, considering their D did well when playing Patriots.

Just like Osweiler deal, Stafford worths 1 1st round + 1 3rd round pick. Another 1st round pick is for Lions who eat Goff's salary.

it’s one of the worst black ghettos in the country. The caste pushers always refer to that neighborhood as the number one hotbed of NFL talent. As I’ve mentioned before when you’re driving around in South Florida, sh*t can change real quick. One minute you could be driving past million dollar homes, minutes later end up someplace you can’t get the hell out quick enough

Yes many tourists looking for directions have died or been maimed because of this. I recall in the 90's staged accidents were common in this area and the Miami Dade Police changed their policy on accidents where if it was just a fender bender for the two parties to drive to the nearest police station and file a report.

There are rumors that the Bears are going to try to trade for Matt Ryan. If I were the Falcons I's ask for Mitch Trubisky in the deal. They could start a rebuild with him.

I brought it up before on here, that I used to root for the Saints. I don't anymore, for reasons already given but this just freaking cinches ever so much more. Check out some of the comments after this story. "Watson's the second best qb in the league." "I'd give EVERYTHING for Wonderboy." My God, you hear about people this stupid, but it's appalling to actually see the gears and sprockets in their little heads turn over.
