NFL News, Rumors and Musings

The Madden video game served as a jumping off point for me (my first real caste related conversation was with my older brother during the Brad Hoover MNF performance). I used to go through the rosters to search for the White players and make all-White teams which led me to getting more interested in the NFL - particularly White athletes and then finally got me into the draft - all starting around 2002. Hard to believe it’s been 20 years.

As for Madden - he was always a gregarious type of announcer. I really didn’t listen to him critically and dissect his analysis like I do now. I enjoyed the Summerall/Madden broadcasts.
Madden and Summerall were such a good team because they were friends watching the game similar to two friends watching a game in one friends man cave. Once Summerall moved on and it was Rabbi Al it was much more clinical and lost some of the flavor of the broadcast.

WR Bailey Gaither has had tryouts with the Colts and Bears recently. I don’t know what he was going through in training camp but “retiring” definitely hurt his NFL career. He was making headlines at camp and was pretty much guaranteed at least a practice squad spot. Hopefully he can find a home next season. He was one of my favorite college WR’s over the past 5 years.

Madden always seemed to having fun and enjoying himself. I remember he did have a fear of flying so he had a big bus he travelled in. Much nicer I'm sure than some of the bus rides I took back in the day.

Maybe the NFL should have more White players so it's less of a "plantation"?

Former NFL RB and Coach Dan Reeves dies at 77. Reeves won a Super Bowl as a RB with The Dallas Cowboys in 1972. He went on to coach the Denver Broncos, NY
Giants and Atlanta Falcons. He went to three Super Bowls with Denver and lost all three. Later took Atlanta to one in which he lost as well.
Reeves was a devout Christian. May he rest in peace.

I think Reeves threw a half back option pass for a td in the "Ice Bowl" to Lance Rentzel but my memory is hazy. I do know this he was a solid tweener halfback/fullback for the Cowboys and was very underrated as a head coach.

Casual fans are hard on his record as a coach but he was smart enough to not force a rigid box around the dynamic Elway. He also transitioned the wild but dynamic Michael Vick into a starting qb. He probably would be a hall of fame coach if he had been fortunate to have one of his heavy underdog teams win the SB, sad news indeed.

Reeves was one of the better head coaches in recent decades as far as being relatively White friendly. I remember his Falcons teams having almost half White starters at one point including five starters on defense. He had players like Tim Dwight, who had a really nice second half in '99 as a receiver, but then was demoted back to being mainly a kick returner. He had fullback Bob Christian, who could have been a very solid starting RB in the league, but who got only the occasional handoff. Like other relatively White friendly coaches, Reeves only took it so far, undoubtedly aware of the unwritten rules and boundaries of the Caste System.

The 2001 Falcons starting defensive line was all white:
LDE: Patrick Kearny
LDT: Travis Hall
RDT: Shane Dronett
RDE: Brady Smith
Also, the starting MLB was Keith Brooking

Wow, now that's an NFL Defense I can cheer for. I was a youngin when these guys were in their prime.. Definitely remember cheering on Tim Dwight at return man and underrated Keith Brooking! Far cry from '01. I feel Atlanta has gotten even darker as a city and team.

His Denver teams were majority White starters at least in the early years of the teams. He seemed to have a bunch small conference players on the team. One of the Achilles' heels of those teams were they have never had a bell cow back and had to rely on the legs of Elway too much to pull rabbits out of the hat in the playoffs. Sammy Winder was the best back that the Broncos had back then and he was really a high end journeyman, something similar to Reeves in Dallas.

Reeves was the starting QB at the University of South Carolina in 1962.

if I recall, around the same time, Matt Stewart and Mark Simoneau were also starters in the LB corps.

Smith and Hall were very underrated. I don’t remember Dronett at all, had to look him up; solid statistically..

I watched that when it happened. A big game, and at Mile High Stadium no less. A total classic. An epic hit for sure!

Simoneau was on the Atlanta roster in 2002, but didn't start. He went to Philadelphia after the 2002 season where he became a starter for several years. Matt Stewart and John Holecek who came from Buffalo became starters in 2002. Atlanta went to a 3-4 and 3 0f the 4 LB's were white. Brooking, Stewart , and Holecek. Holecek broke his forearm after 11 games and may have had some knee injuries too. His consistent career came to an end. Stewart suffered a shoulder injury in 2007 and for the most part ended his career. Brooking was a staple at LB for almost 15 years. He started 193 of a possible 210 games as the first string LB. It was only in his rookie season that he did not start, but played in 15 games. His career ended after the 2012 season with Denver.

The passing of John Madden has brought about more genuine sadness and grief for the death of a White man since. . . who?
