Hey guys. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Matt Jones was arrested and charged with possesion of cocaine and some weed residue. How stupid was he to be in a car cutting lines with a credit card. He is 25 years of age and he will get what he deserves.

I'm not taking the blame away for an idiotic act of stupidity. However, he has been depressed for a long time because of how his coach and teammates have treated him. That could have helped lead to this but the bottom line is he needs to man up, grow up and move on. Get your life straight and hopefully get another chance with some other team. To have his ability and throw it all away is very sad.Edited by: white lightning

Being a white man and having to play on Jacksonville would drive anyone to drugs.

Bottom line, however, is just how stupid athletes are. They make a ton of money, have fame (if you're black that is) and can live a very good life. So you sit in a car and do drugs. Real smart.

And The War on Drugs claims another victim...

When are we going to wake up in this country and start treating this stuff for what it really is. It's a public health issue, not a criminal one!!

Well, I guess Matt is going to have other things on his mind beside camp opening. Too bad.

Sad news indeed. I don't really know what to say other than I hate it happening. It always seems to be something.

Can't really make an excuse for the guy, I was a big fan and wanted him to do well but this is his own fault. He should of concentrated more on his play on the field rather than getting high. No double standard can be made here, no excuses either...it was a stupid decision on his part.

Ditto. It made me very sad to see this news scroll across ESPN a hour ago. It now gives the Jaguars the excuse to do what they have wanted to do anyway, cut Matt Jones or drop him so far down the depth chart at WR that he effectively is off the team anyway. I hope he gets his life together, man up and get a chance somewhere else. All that freakish talent just wasting away.

I'm glad nobody here is defending him...I think we've done that long enough.

Judging by this idiotic move, maybe Black Jack Del Rio was right, Jones is a f*cking lazy screw-up. I would never think someone of his level of "faith" would be involved in this horsesh*t. I will never speak another kind word about him, as I always have since watching him at Arkansas.

Think about it, all this time we wasted anaylzing this buffoon, and he's no better than the black thugs who were playing ahead of him in Blacksonville! I'm disgusted with this loser. I'm sure a white skills player (and legendary draft "bust") who now has a criminal record, will never see the field again. After reading this story, I'm not too saddened by that fact.

I am very saddened by the fact Thrashen but make no excuse for his stupid decision to use drugs and worse, get caught. I would like to hear more about this story and what may have been going on in his personal life before I have to start hating on him too much. For our purposes at this site, this is terrible news. Nothing changes the fact that he is freakishly athletically gifted and up till today was being screwed over by Jacksonville.

I'm not ready to throw him under the bus. I want Jones to receive the same pampered treatment as the rest of the NFL's blackthletes: apologize, go to rehab, and get signed by some team for millions of dollars.

The sad truth is that he will probably never play in the NFL again. Compare how this will be handled compared to how much of a pass Mike Vick was given when he was accused of dog fighting and possession of paraphernalia. How about the multiple arrests for DWI of 'Hands of Stone' Koren Robinson? Or getting essentially a speeding ticket for a hit and run that left a woman with broken bones? Or actually SERVING TIME in prison for distribution, but coming back to play running back? How about striking a police officer with a vehicle, or pissing hot on a drug screen multiple times?

If they want to give black athletes a pass for everything, I demand the same for Matt Jones.

Man did we lose a lot of talent there. But Del Rio has attempted to destroy him since he got to Jacksonville. Their QBs never threw to him enough.

Of course, there's the double standard. Blacks like Pac-Man Jones and Ricky Williams get so many chances. How about the Jags stand by him? He'll be compared to murderers for the rest of his life.

There are 2-3 other threads in Jacksonville Jaguars forum discussing Jones' situation. Might want to join in there.

An article brings more evidence of how the Jags were partly to blame regarding the play and maligning of Jones last season for a mere 3 drops or so. I hope some other team picks Jones up after he serves his impending suspension for coke and goes through rehab. This is just a shame. I truly believe if Jones got with a QB who was good at throwing down field and believed in him, he could become a Pro-bowl caliber player. Here is the article:

Wasted talent? Bucky Brooks > INSIDE THE NFL

Matt Jones' recent arrest will likely end his disappointing tenure with the Jaguars. The former first-round pick never developed into the big play receiver the team envisioned, and his inability to transfer his outstanding athleticism into production was surprising to several league observers. "He is a phenomenal talent," said an AFC scout. "It's hard to find an athlete with his size, and combination of physical skills. It's a shame to see a talent like that wasted."

As one of the top athletes in his draft class, Jones had most observers thinking he would have an instant impact as a red zone receiver for the Jags. With nine touchdowns in his first two seasons, Jones appeared to be on his way to becoming the impact receiver the Jaguars envisioned when they selected him with the 21st pick. However, he appeared to regress last season, and his questionable work habits led the team to reduce his role. "He is such a great athlete that the game has always come so easy to him," said a Jaguars' official. "But he needs to improve his work ethic if he wants to be successful in this league."

Although Jones' career has been plagued by inconsistencies, some scouts believe the Jags haven't done enough to tap into his potential. "He was a former college quarterback and basketball player who is still relatively new to the position," said an AFC scout. "Yet, they put him in the slot and have him run routes over the middle. That is a big adjustment for a kid who has never been hit."

While the Jaguars attempted to exploit mismatches by placing Jones in the slot against smaller sub-package players, his imposing size and leaping ability makes him a more viable threat on the outside or in the red zone. By using Jones on the perimeter, the Jaguars would have been able to create a number of favorable jump ball situations for Jones on an assortment of fades and fade-stops. In addition, the use of Jones on the outside would allow the team to take advantage of his speed on vertical routes off play-action.

Regardless of whether Jones has been used correctly or not, the fact he has only five career starts and has been maddeningly inconsistent throughout his career left him squarely on the bubble even before his recent brush with the law. The team's offseason additions of Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson upgraded the talent of the receiving corps, and they join key contributors, Reggie Williams and Dennis Northcutt, ahead of Jones on the depth chart. Thus, Jones enters camp locked in a battle with Mike Walker, John Broussard and others for the final roster spot.

Unless the ultra-talented Jones dazzles during the preseason, the odds are against him suiting up for the Jaguars in 2008.

Bucky Brooks played for five NFL teams in a six-year playing career and spent seven seasons as a college scout for the Seahawks and Panthers

How can Dennis Northcutt be in front of anybody? The whole case for our arguments at Caste football can be made in full just by the fact Dennis Northcutt is on a NFL roster.

Well he certainly shouldn't have been a starter last season anyway. That was pathetic. Benching Jones for one dropped pass. And the fact that Reggie Williams was given one more year than Jones to finally come around when Jones was new to the position and got benched for a few dropped balls is pathetic. And now the Jags are giving another black retread who has failed miserably in the league with more dropped passes than Jones Troy Williamson a legit shot over their own drafted player.

I think this coke charge has "black supremacist" Jack Del Rio nailing the final nail in Jones coffin.

I just hope Jones can serve his suspension and catch on with a new team, he is way too talented to have his career over already when he was the Jags leading WR in his second year at the position in his life and was used incorrectly last year!

well, here's some good news on Matt Jones: apparently he is having the best camp since he got in the NFL, and even Del Rio praises him. we shall see what will come of it, but glad to see Matt still has some desire left in him.

The guy has clearly got to be used correctly and playing this huge freak of a man with a long stride in the slot like Wes Welker (short stride) is ludacris. Jones is an athletic freak and should be used more on down field routes. Sending Jones across the middle too much is not his forte.

I think this could actually be the year where Jones revives his career. However, Jones will have to learn to make the catch better in a crowded endzone. He seems to prefer working with some room. He had 2 drops I noticed in the regular season, which isn't all that bad compared to some stone handed black starters, but he dropped an important pass in the playoffs too that really hurt the team. The Jags have to use this beast of a man better though. Just because he is white doesn't mean he is the same style as Wes Welker.

I don't know, Shogun. I lost about 95% of all respect for him after learning of this little ordeal. I don't have to explain how I feel about drugs. Remember my little speech a week ago in the UFC thread about Chuck Liddell? Same goes for Jones. I don't know the finer pints of the story, but I guarantee he wasn't alone in the car, and that his "company" probably consisted of some "bruvahs" from that black-hole of a football team he plays on.

Coke (and other drugs) destroys people, Shogun. It changes the way a person thinks and can make them do things that they wouldn't ordinarily do. It is, by far, the WORST drug a person can consume due to the extreme nature of the high it produces. I've lost THREE friends in four years to hardcore drugs, Shogun. Thats three families who will never be the same again. Have you ever seen a father's hair turn completely grey in a week because he's in such a terrorized state-of-mind caused by his son's death? I have.

Unless Jones does something "magical" to change his life within the next few months, he's nothing more than a junkie in my eyes.

Under your comments about Liddell, I posted my comments about why things like this do not matter to me. White athletic performance pretty much trumps everything for me in sports.

Keeping up with Jones

Koetter <Jags OC> said the Jaguars need to find more ways to get the ball to leading receiver Matt Jones.

Jones, who has caught 16 passes for 173 yards this season, has emerged from what appeared to be his last season in Jacksonville to become the team's go-to receiver.

"We have to continue to find better ways to use Matt [Jones]," Koetter said. "Let's face it. He has some talents that other guys don't have."

Jones ranks No. 11 in the AFC and 25th in the NFL in receiving yardage.

Haha, what happened to "superstars" Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson? Wow, what a turnaround. From drug-addict to finally getting motovated. If only David Dink and Dunk Gerard could actually stretch the field (you know, like every NFL QB should be able to do).

From the Jaquars notebook:
Matt Jones in select company

Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones is the only AFC player and one of just six in the NFL to catch five or more passes in each of the first four games. Jason Witten (Dallas), Reggie Bush (New Orleans), DeSean Jackson (Philadelphia), Santana Moss (Washington) and Greg Jennings (Green Bay) also have done it.

"I have always said that I do not always have to have a go-to guy, but Matt has definitely turned into one of those guys," Garrard said.

It is definitely encouraging to hear the QB speaking so strongly about a receiver. I'm glad to see Jones' long over due emergence. I am still fearful of Black Jack unwarrantably demoting Jones behind those slow footed, stone handed losers the jock sniffers love to drool over.

Baring an act of stupidity by pea-brained Del Rio , I would love to see Jones get some more big play opportunities. Garrard is a game manager and doesn't air it out much and as a result Jones' size and speed are still being underutilized. IMO if Jones had Brees, Brady or any of the other strong armed QBs, he could have Randy Moss like big play ability.

To follow up what Kaptain said, I found this quote on Jones' fantasy notes:
"Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones became the first Jacksonville
receiver since Jimmy Smith in 2001 to have five-plus receptions during
each of the first four games of the season. <cite>(KFFL)"</cite>

Welcome to the board, Freethinker.

I still see a lot of fantasy sites that are very reluctant to give Jones credit. The gist is often that as soon as Jerry Porter is (finally) healthy, Jones will immediately become a backup. Porter has to be one of the most over-rated players in a league of over-rated players. A former first round draft choice he's now in his ninth season and has yet to have a thousand yard season. If Matt Jones is a "bust," then Porter is a bust times three. Yet Porter's still treated like a star despite his perennial underachieving, constant injuries, and bitching and moaning like a little girl.

I can't see Jacksonville having a good passing game anytime soon. Jones needs to keep doing what he's doing and then sign with a team witha vertical passing game and he'll really put up some numbers.

Thanks for the welcoming Don. Great job with the site as well.

You are right on point with that last post. Why any team would give this 30 yr old bust a 6 yr deal is proof that a caste system does exist.
