My wife got me the $100.00 AncestryDNA.com test this past Christmas and after a long wait, my results finally arrived this past Friday. It's essentially what I predicted (heavily "Europe West"), however, I'm not sure how I have any lineage from "Great Britain" or "Scandinavia," but I thought the results were very cool and wanted to share with the CF community.

The test suggests that I am "100% European," comprised of:

95% - Europe West
3% - Scandinavian
2% - Great Britain

Obviously, I blocked out my name for privacy reasons. The image was too large, so I split into two pictures:

Ancestry DNA Scan 1.jpg

Ancestry DNA Scan 2jpg.jpg

It goes without saying that these results are only testing the 23 chromosomes I inherited from my parents. Therefore, if had, say, an Irish person or a Italian person in my lineage I would never know unless I inherited some of their DNA, which I clearly didn't. It's a very interesting topic, particularly for European Americans with family that has been in the U.S. for multiple generations.

I have heard about these DNA tests but have never actually seen one. That is fascinating the way they break it down in graphs. So like you said you are primarily made up of Western European stock. Interesting.

Very cool Thrashen! I have been wanting to get my DNA tested as well. I know my immediate family history on my father's side - Italian and pretty confident my lineage can be traced far back on the boot. Pretty sure my mom's side is a mix of Irish and English but I'd like to find out for sure.

I think genealogy and the availability of DNA testing can as a side effect instill pride in individuals heritage if they took the time to go back through history to trace their roots to realize where they came from.

I always thought every White European had a sliver of West Asian ancestry from wars and migration. I guess that was either propaganda or I was mistaken.

I remember when out and about lesbian Billie Jean King found out she didn't have any non White blood she whined on PBS about it as she was told that her family had distant Native American ancestry....

A good friend of mind took the same AncestryDNA test that I did a few months back and his results were "100% Ireland" and nothing else. There are many Youtube videos and blogs and social media posts of people showing their AncestryDNA results online and many are 100% European, which is the most important matter! Other people, like this guy and girl below, got a huge mix of European...

Very good information Thrashmeister. :)

I may try the same test. A few years ago, my eldest son & I did some ancestry research & found German kin on my maternal side (albeit in the 1600s). I'd previously thought my heritage to be a mix of English, Welsh, Scots-Irish with a hint of French Huguenot & Norse. However, I now include German. ;-)

I did the test about 4-5 years ago. It showed alot more Scandinavian than I predicted; but that makes perfect sense due to the Scandinavians' well-documented presence in the British Isles and throughout (especially northern) Europe. You may know that your lineage is Irish, Scottish or English... Don't be surprised if that really means Scandinavian by way of the British Isles.
A couple things that surprised me were under "low confidence regions." By results showed 1-2% from Caucasus, Greece and North Africa. and 3% from Finland/NW Russia. I still don't know what to think of that. Reminds me that wars, trade, crusades, etc. had collateral consequences.

Just saw my DNA results.

There's one surprise: according to this, I have a lot more Irish and less English than I thought.

Ireland and Scotland: 71%. This would be mainly Irish, since I have very few ancestors from Scotland, and it points to Munster Ireland as the main area, especially North Tipperary.

England, Wales & Northwestern Europe: 29%. It breaks this down to be mainly from England, with some Acadian (Huguenot) which is originally from France.

That is nice pedigree CM. You are essentially made up of a mix of the"Celtic Rim."

In my humble opinion English stock is the best in the world but it must be said in fairness that Irish women in general are the most beautiful in the world. Some Irish lasses are so striking they can nearly make a man pass out just by looking at them.

I still can't figure out how they end up with what they say are accurate results just from saliva but what do I know.

Yes. My bloodline is English, but my paternal great-grandfather and grandfather married Irish girls.

Despite the risk of being in a database and having a higher likelihood of getting caught if I ever become a spree killer, I got my DNA tested. It confirmed what I already knew, half German and a quarter Polish, and cleared up the grandparent my family was unclear of.

Turns out I’ve got a good amount English/Welch with a sprinkling of Scott/ Irish and Norwegian. It was worth the $50 (sale price with Ancestry).
