White Sox lose 119th game, 1 away from '62 Mets

Luis Robert and the White Sox tied the American League record with their 119th loss Saturday night, dropping a 6-2 decision to the San Diego Padres, moving Chicago just one loss from equaling the post-1900 record of 120 losses by the 1962 New York Mets.

Given that an AAA team would typically be expected to win about 25% of its games if it played a season against major league teams, the 2024 White Sox are statistically worse than about half of AAA teams.
 
I thought this was an interesting statistic. There were only 7 hitters in MLB that hit .300 The second lowest ever.

According to Opta STATS, Alonso is the first player in MLB history to hit a go-ahead home run while trailing in the ninth inning or later of a winner-take-all game.

It's a jarring stat at first glance. There are so many iconic late-game home runs in MLB postseason history, but none occurred in the ninth inning or later of a Game 7. Or in this case, a Game 3 of the wild-card round.

Joe Carter's game-winning homer in the 1993 World Series was in a Game 6. Kirby Puckett's iconic home run in the 1991 World Series was in the 11th inning of Game 6. Kirk Gibson's walk-off blast in the 1988 World Series occurred in Game 1. The game was tied when David Ortiz hit a series-clinching homer in Game 3 of the ALDS against the Anaheim Angels in 2004.

Shades of 1968, when Carl Yastrzemski was the only .300 hitter in the AL, just barely reaching it with a mark of .301. Danny Cater finished second at .290. There were five .300 hitters in the NL that year, led by Pete Rose's .335. But unlike 2024, a number of pitchers put up spectacular numbers in '68.

It's rumored that in 1968 pitchers actually pitched complete games. What a concept!
 
The first billion dollar baseball player isn't far off. What do those of you who follow baseball closely think of Soto? Looking at his stats I see nothing special, a .288 career hitter with good but not great power (201 homers in seven seasons), rarely steals bases, good but not great fielder. . . drawing a lot of walks seems to be his most notable speciality.

 
I think Afro Latino hype job. No way he lives up to that contract LOL. Total Mets move.

Nothing really jumps out at you with Soto, except the OBP career .421, but that's about it. He did hit a career high 41 HR's this past season and really hasn't led the league in much except the Covid shortened 2020 season and NO MVP'S! He's going to get double what Trout got!! Trout is a 3 time MVP and despite missing the equivalent of four seasons is the active leader in WAR. Trout WAR 86.2/Soto WAR 36.4.
.....and as you stated doesn't run the bases well and isn't a great fielder. Ridiculous!
However, if someone is dumb enough to give him the money, it's not his fault.
 
The salaries are inflating year after year. If a young Trout or Harper were FAs now, they’d get the same offers. The money is stupid but the years are worse. If he doesn’t opt out after 5, the Mets will be paying him into his age 41 year. He’s an old 26, with 8 years of MLB wear and tear on him already.

As an aside, how much money does it take to become wealthier than the entire DR government? Wonder if a wealthy baseball player(s), could just buy up the country at some point.

The Mets will rapidly become a very anti white organization as they are lead by a jewish owner and have a jewish GM (Stearns). Would expect them not to re sign Alonso and their roster will look darker and darker in the coming years. Expect them to flop like the early 90s.

It seems the salaries are inflating due to newer richer owners flexing their financial wallet. Otherwise the salaries would be going up at roughly the inflation rate which is what they were going up after the Yankees became rational with their spending.

Soto should be shot his last 5 years of the deal and be the highest paid pinch hitter in the game. No rational GM would ever sign off on the deal.
 
The Yankees are slowing getting a little whiter one player at a time. Happy for Goldy as he needs to finish his career on top. Hopefully
in the World Series!
