Miscellaneous Boxing News

The boxing schedule for this weekend starts on Friday. The major fights are on Saturday, not many White fighters, but they have a good fight card. Benavidez vs Morrell should be good, and Figueroa vs Fulton will also be good. Azim vs Lipinets looks good on paper, but Lipinets is getting on in age and has been in some wars.

Yes the ppv snuck up on me and is probably a sign that it should have been a network fight. I saw the fight week press conference photo and figured that Figueroa vs Morrell was having an opening press conference as the "Mexican Monster" looks huge and was probably 190 pounds at the press conference. If he cuts weight properly he should have a huge size advantage as the Afro-Cuban looked only about 10 pounds or so above 168 pounds.

White Mexican Brandon Figueroa fights Stephen Fulton in a rematch, he was last seen getting screwed by an iffy decision favoring Fulton. He will need to decisively beat Fulton to earn the rematch win or he could get the short end of the stick again.

As you noted Lipinets fights tomorrow but he has looked washed in his recent outings I think BOXXER promotions is banking on that to not challenge the green Azim too much.

I just looked up Liddard and it came back to me and he is prospect with some potential. If he does make it to the top he could draw women to his fights as he is quite handsome. Hopefully he isn't the randy bachelor type as many fighters have their careers ruined by chasing down women or having a relationship with a crazy woman or a string of them...

PS I looked up the main event of the PPV and the fight is at 175 pounds so the Mexican Monster was 200 pounds at the press conference. I figured he was going back down to 168 after his flat performance against the "Nail" but if he is that hulking before a weigh in he would be "dead" at 168 or not make weight.

Updating the bouts from Friday and George Liddard easily handled his Afro-Brit club level opponent. As I speculated this was a showcase bout for the British prospect.

Also about an hour ago Sergey Lipinets was stopped by Adam Azim. This is the first stoppage loss in the natural division for Lipinets and judging from the wire reports he was never in this one and the referee showed mercy on the fading veteran by waving an end to the one sided bout.

Hopefully Lipinets sees the sign to retire but I have no idea if he has much of a nest egg to walk off into the sunset so he may fight on as a B side trial horse for prospects.

On Saturday night Brandon Figueroa lost his WBC featherweight title to Stephen Fulton and this loss had no ambiguity about it as he just didn't throw enough punches to overcome the better quality work of Fulton. Even Fulton stated that was the reason why the White Mexican-American lost this one.

Figueroa may need to move up as he looked like a POW at the weigh in and the volume punching that made him a fan friendly fighter wasn't there last night. One problem I see for him is he will be fighting larger men at 130 pounds and his height and reach advantage will diminish.

In passing the Mexican Monster won going away against Morell but he still didn't look like a true PPV threat to whomever emerges from the light heavyweight showdown later this month. Both Beterbiev and Bivol would have to age out for Benavidez to be anything more than a live dog against the previous two fighters.

Lipinets was over match in this fight, He took a few nut shots that didn't help, but he took a bad beating. Azim looked like a middleweight. Joe Gossen ruined Lipinets when he had him go up two weight classes to fight Boots Ennis.

I didn’t catch any of the undercards as I got to my friends house just in time for the main event. Morrell/Benavidez was a good fight. Both fighters stayed busy and in the end it was pretty clear that Benavidez’s size and physicality was too much for the smaller Morrell. I don’t see Benavidez having success against either of the two kings of the division though. He has good power and is durable but he is there to be hit and can be out boxed pretty easily by guys like Bivol and Beterbiev in my opinion. Morrell might be in a tough spot as he won’t probably be able to beat the top competition at 175 and will have to stand in a long line to ever have even a snowballs chance of getting Canelo at 168 for a payday.

This is a pretty slow weekend of boxing it looks like. If anyone knows where another fight card is taking place please post it. There was a card in Montreal last night, but HW Bakhodir Jalolov had to withdraw because of an injury.

Feb. 8: Manchester, England

  • Derek Chisora vs. Otto Wallin, 12 rounds, heavyweights
  • Willy Hutchinson vs. Zach Parker, 10 rounds, light heavyweights
  • Masood Abdulah vs. Zak Miller, 12 rounds, featherweights
  • Jack Rafferty vs. Reece MacMillan, 12 rounds, for Rafferty's British junior welterweight title
  • Nathan Heaney vs. Sofiane Khati, 10 rounds, middleweights
  • Nelson Hysa vs. Todorche Cvetkov, 10 rounds, heavyweights
  • Walter Fury vs. Joe Hardy, 4 rounds, junior middleweights

Yes it's a slow weekend for North American televised cards. As far as I know the Quebec based card and the English based card are the only two cards this weekend. The Super Bowl err the Big Game is the 1000 pound gorilla in the room and promoters won't stage North American cards on the weekend.

I listened to the weekly Talk Sport podcast and thought the world was upside down with Chisora being touted as the "favorite" in his fight with Wallin. But bookies have the Swede as a solid favorite and he should be due to age and mileage alone. If Chisora hadn't pulled off the miracle bomb against Joyce this fight probably wouldn't have been scheduled.

Wallin needs to win this fight and make a statement a iffy win or a iffy loss or a loss like Joshua would be a disaster which would probably end any chance of being a viable contender in the heavyweight division.

The worst result possible happened in the Chisora vs Wallin fight as the Swede was just as passive as the Joshua fight but he was up against a more suspect opponent so he went the distance but was dropped twice and lost an obvious decision. This ends any serious run for the Swede to the top of the division as even a B side foil. He could receive B side work against a peaking prospect like Itauma if the purse is to the Swedes liking.

Biyarslanov is rising the ranks at light welter. Good addition to the division. Made it look super easy stopping a former European and IBO champ in 2 rounds.

This is a tough assignment for Berinchyk as he spotting height and reach and nearly a decade to Davis in age. I looked up his boxing resume and Berinchyk fought a bareknuckle fight during the pandemic shutdown so he is fighter which could play a factor in the fight if he can test Davis' desire to win in give and take fight.

Supposedly Teo Lopez delivered a vending crate of bananas to Davis and the Davis camp thought it was the Ukrainian and a brawl nearly happened at the weigh in for the fight. Lopez has said racist taunts against Blacks in the past and this could go back to his days in the Black sections of Brooklyn where he grew up.

The Saturday afternoon card has plenty of White prospects and Catterall should win the title fight as Barboza doesn't look on the level of the Brit in terms of skills and ability.

Updating the Friday night card and Vito Mielnicki seemed to edge out Irish national Connor Coyle in a tight and rugged fight with the more powerful shots coming from the 22 year old New Jersey prospect but the fight was scored a majority draw. These two could easily run it again in rematch which would be a crowd pleasing affair.

In the past the fight could have been marketed as an ethnic war but these days promoters are leery of PC media heat if they took this angle this fight could have drawn more eye balls initially and I doubt many would have channel hopped as the action was quite good throughout.

Berinchyk was dropped and stopped in the 4th round. Body shots did him in. Davis was way bigger and better. Zayas stopped the German Spomer in the ninth round. Zayas is a good fighter but got hurt with several overhand rights from Spomer. Jared Anderson looked bad. He won a unanimous decision but was fighting a fighter who had lost to a 5 wins and 14 losses fighter before last night. Anderson was also hurt in the 10th round. Mielnicki looked good last night.

You beat me to the main event as Davis was 20+pounds heavier than the champion when they entered the ring and the things with the unorthodox Ukrainian fighter that worked against the much smaller Naverette had no chance of being anything more than annoyance to the hulking Davis.

Spomer is not the usual ethnic German he is from the Central Asian stans and is a descendant of Germans that came to farm in the Russian Empire under the invitation of the Tsarina Katherine the Great who was an ethnic German who married into the Russian monarchy. He probably has distant East Asian ancestry as initially thought he was possibly a Mulatto because of Jones being in his corner as his skull isn't built like a typical Nordic as it's round like a ball.

As for the fight the ethnic PR prospect did what he had to do but did survive a chin check where he was literally shaken to his bones by a counter punch but Spong had little time on the clock to follow up and further test the resolve of the blue chip prospect.

Yes I never mentioned the ethnic Greek journeyman as I figured he would be a human target for Anderson but he rattled Anderson twice in the bout and Anderson looked mechanical through out the fight. Anderson's star has faded and is rumored to be a free agent as this was his last fight under his current contract and Top Rank probably will dump him.

Boxing needs to put a stop to these weight bully fights.
Yes it's one of the biggest problems in boxing and PED usage probably enables it as many illegal drugs that fighters have been popped for are fat shedder or water loss drugs.

Rounding up the weekend results and Jack Catteral took a fairly big step backwards as he lost a tight split decision against Mexican American Castizo Arnold Barboza. Catteral just didn't work hard enough and was too fine with his work and Barboza and his team scouted the Brit well as Barboza only tried to touch the target instead of trying and punch through the target which would have helped Catteral dodge aggressive punches.

I don't know if Catteral will ever alter his style as he lost to the former undisputed Josh Taylor in a similar manner. He did win the rematch going away but Taylor is clearly not the same fighter he was when he was the undisputed 140 champion.

PS last week had one tragic and near tragic result as Irish prospect John Cooney died in a regional title bout. Initially when I saw the headline I thought it was the Irish American world famous title challenger Gerry Cooney. God Bless this man and his family.

Also Eurasian former champion Shavkat Rakhimov lost in a cross roads bout against club fighter Justin Pauldo and after he was examined by doctors at a San Antonio hospital he was diagnosed with a brain bleed. The former champion fell apart late in the fight like other fighters with this issue but he lived and many of them have died.

ttps://www.cbsnews.com/news/john-cooney-dies-irish-boxer-injured-super-featherweight-title/Similar to Joe Mesi a good 20 years ago he will never fight again in serious regulated jurisdictions. Similar to Mesi he could fight on in rogue territories but will be shut out from elite fighters and the purses that they can generate.

https://www.boxingscene.com/richard-torrez-jnr-guido-vianello-set-for-april-5-in-las-vegas--205286PS2 I forgot to mention that Richard Torrez vs Guido Vianello was announced. Top Rank seems to want to use the Italian national as a B side measuring stick as his one way traffic beating of Mak should have earned him a spot on a super boxing card in Saudi Arabia but he will have put an O on the record of the peaking White Mexican American prospect to get beyond this level of fights.
