Duane Bobick, the Great White Hope of the 70s. One of the few people to beat Teo'filo Stevenson. He had a good career going until he met Ken Norton. I certainly pulled for him in every fight. He had a major weakness of not being able to block the over hand right. It finally led to the end of his career.
He had a disappointing career when he turned pro he was viewed as a better prospect than Holmes who he easily beat to make the Olympic team.
It seemed like he had a glass jaw when he fought the elite of the division, though you could say a throat punch from Norton caused him to crumble more than any shot to the temple in his first round knockout loss to Norton. After that loss he lost to Tate in a similar manner and then he retired after another loss.
He led a rather quiet life less the industrial accident(surprisingly I read he became an alderman in his suburb in Minnesota).
This weekend is busy before the big rematch but as far as I know doesn't have a White headliner but should have a few prospects buried on the undercards of the various shows.
As for Fury he hasn't looked good physically since he failed a PED test or even semi fit since Wilder I as he has packed fat and some muscle to fight a rugged style to beat Wilder but he still kept this physique to beat less dangerous opponents like Whyte and Chisora.
I think he is similar to Ali and is past his peak due to less than spartan living out of fight camps and is an old 36.
I started deep diving some undercard bouts and Gurgen Hovhannisyan is fighting this weekend against a non descript opponent and is still as large as ever. Also Gary Culley is fighting Maxie Hughes in a cross roads bout on the undercard of a Matchroom show.
In the main event Uzbek(Eurasian) Murodjon Akhmadaliev is on the comeback trail and is in a WBA interim title fight against Ricardo Franco. The Uzbek is an all action fighter who was a unified champion in the 122 pound division at one time.
Updating the weekend action and reading the wire reports Gurgen Hovhannisyan seemed to meet stout resistance from his opponent who was 309 pounds as the fight went the distance with the "cannon fodder" opponent at times giving as good as he got and winning rounds. This is not a good sign for the future of the prospect. He needs more gym work on defensive techniques if he is to advance beyond this level opponent and be assured of victory.
On the Saturday afternoon card in Monaco presented by Matchroom Gary Culley was thoroughly out boxed and repeatedly rocked by Maxie Hughes as the veteran was able to walk into the wheel house of the taller Irish prospect. Culley needs to work on jab and establishing distance or he will never get beyond this level of opponent as a tall and skinny opponent needs to be able extend his arms to be effective and he never did this beyond flashes in this bout. As for Hughes he will have another shot at an elusive legitimate world title through either an eliminator or a possible world title shot if things break right for him.
In the main event Murodjon Akhmadaliev destroyed his game Mexican opponent with too much power and accurate combos and won the WBA interim 122 pound title and will position himself towards a possible title shot with Monster Inoue. This fight could be a fight of the year candidate if the Uzbek can take the power of the pound for pound Japanese star.
In possibly the biggest news of the day unheralded French opponent Bruno Surace violently knocked out Jaime Munguia. It seemed like it was one way traffic for the Mexican star until the fateful one punch walk off knockout. Surace has the record of a non puncher but he was able to take out the possibly ruined Munguia similar to any huge punching contender. Surace will jump the rankings and could get a substantial raise for a rematch or even position himself for an eliminator with another contender.
There was at least a few other fights with White fighters on the weekend but the cards were numerous and too hard to keep track of all the action.
