Honestly, McNair was probably popular to NFL fans but outside of football he wasn't well known. He may of gotten plugged for the bills in his wallet and nothing else. That woman may have just been a witness. Some people will kill for fifty bucks so who knows?

they left out the little domestic abuse issue from a few years back. The news-media PTB will only remember the items we're "permitted" to hear and see.

When was this spousal abuse incident? I don't recall ever hearing anything about it.

Come on folks, enough with the nasty comments. Where's the regard for human life here? Someone has lost a son, a brother, a father, and who knows what else?

Don already said everything I was going to say. Compared to the thugs we have the in NFL these days, this was a good man. He competed hard on the field, and as a whole package, was a pretty decent QB for quite a few years.

And despite a few minor transgressions off of it (no one is perfect), he was known for doing some good work in the community. Just this year, he financed 3 youth football camps with his own money, and has always been involved with giving back to the poor.

May God have mercy on this soul.

Yes Mcnair wasn't the rat bastard so many other NFL affaletes are, and yes he was a pretty good Qb in his prime, and yeah ESPN and the sports media should be complimentary of him in his untimely passing. But I don't see why a few negative comments on this site are out of place. It's not our place to celebrate the guy and we were pretty hard on him during his career. I don't think it's a big deal to mention his shortcomings or transgressions, nobody here is whooping it up because he's dead and for sure no one else is going to bring up his personal failings which had something to do with his unfortunate passing.

I seriously doubt anyone with a personal attachment to McNair is trolling this site and feels depressed because of some less them complimentary remarks on his death.

Ironically he received the caste treatment going into college. I'm with Don on this on, save the attacks for media, they are horrible.

"Ghouls," huh? I'll remember this thread the next time you say anything less than complimentary. Oh wait, I wouldnt even care enough to do that.

I apologize for not giving a sh*t about a 36 year old black multi-millionare, former 1st round draft pick, former MVP who abused his wife a few years ago....and was most likley dating a young girl barely out of high school (while still married with 4 kids). I feel bad that he's dead, because despite the infinate media praise he received for playing injured, he was a pretty great player.Edited by: Thrashen

I agree that negative comments aren't out of place. But I thinkthe analogy by Thrashen-- who usually throws little but bulleyes in his analyses -- to Von Brunn was not a good one. There's agigantic differencebetween murdering and being murdered whether ideology or some "cause"comes into play or not. McNair was a "character" player, the lack of which is what we so often decry among affletes and the media and caste system that enables them, and was basically a Mississippi country boy not a thug (and I admit to being unaware of domestic abuse charges concerning McNair and I follow the endemiclegal troubles of black athletes pretty closely). Very few white athletes haven't gone through some bumps in the road in their lives; the upside down "culture" we live in all but ensures it. Edited by: Don Wassall

Yes Von Brunn/McNair not a good comparison.

Also BTW the media has not been easy going on him treating his affair as a scandal. I guess they like to defend the real thugs not the half way decent black players.

I recently saw a trailer for a movie, a real miscengenation special where a gorgeous blond white woman was doing a "Fatal attraction" thing with some black guy. It was one of those hollywierd specials, you know the type, hot white woman will do anything to be with the smart, high acheiving black businessman, but he will have NOTHING to do with her, just like black guys in real life

! She even nabs his kids just so she can "mother" them, (like Angelie Jolie or Madonna). The McNair situation is somewhat similar. Probably help the box office for the movie.

As Don writes, more than a few white athletes have had problems in their lives. My brother lived in the same area as McNair and saw him around occasionally. He seemed a nice enough fellow.

The girl's familiy said she told them that Steve and his wife were separated, and headed for divorce.  It may or may not be true, but their house was put on the market April 11th.

Um yeah that was definitely Steve's house up for sale. There was a picture of him in his Titans uniform with his son on the wall. I just saw McNair on "Pros vs. Joes" and he seemed, yet again, like a good person. I liked him because he came out of a small college, Alcorn State, and never showboated, just wanted to win. Sorry to see him die so young.

RIP, Steve.

That said... didn't someone recently mention on CF that McNair got more mileage than anyone in history for *almost* pulling something off (that CF'er IIRC didn't mention what he almost pulled off but it obviously was victory in SB XXXIV)?

Rocco Mediate hasn't gotten any windfall that I've noticed for *almost* overcoming Tiger in last year's US Open.

RIP Steve.

That being said, does anyone else think the incident looks similar toThe Natural, in a limited way?

McNair was always hyped up and praised endlessly for his toughness. White QBs would have been called "injury prone". McNair was praised eventually for his determination to play Quarterback. Eric Crouch was considered "stubborn" for his determination to play Quarterback. Matt Jones was moved to Wide Receiver and then released because of such a terrible drug problem :(. If Roy Hobbs was a hidden talent that was shot, McNair was the opposite I guess. He was an overrated player that was shot.

McNair was a good, tough quarterback. If he were white, they probably would have moved him to fullback though.

But, that really has nothing to do with McNair's tragic death so

RIP and God bless Steve McNair.
