This has been a long time coming for everyone here at CF. Today is a good day and I am going to be optimistic about Matt's future. I predict he will have a good season with the Bengals, reestablish himself, then sign a multi-year deal next offseason!

Good news.

It's disgusting though- that guys like Pac Man Jones and Chris Henry (with no disrespect to his untimely passing) were rejoiced for by the media when given second and third chances, but Jones became a pariah. Jones is not a violent criminal and was coming off a good season. He didn't do something that seriously threatened someones life with violence or actually killed someone while intoxicated (Stallworth).

I'm sure there are some black athletes that you could compare Jones to- like Quincy Carter or Lawrence Taylor- who used Coke.

Heck, even Rey Maualuga who drove just barely over the legal limit with a 17 year old in the car (a gf? he's only in his early 20s though) could be considered slightly more "dangerous" than Jones. I think teams were "afraid" to touch Jones until he got a big "punishment" b/c of all the media and fan hate on the guy. There always needs to be a white sacrificial lamb or scapegoat- to make the black athletes look good- in this sick league.

I'll also say that I think Marvin Lewis is improving a bit with his treatment of white players. Maybe he realizes his job could hang in the "balance". Leonard should have gotten a few more carries per game, but at least he sees the field- and I'd say Cedric Benson was actually doing pretty well to justify the situation somewhat. How Lewis treats Jones should have quite an effect on how the Bengals do this season and how I'll feel about em'.

FINALLY!!! The super athletic Jones is signed!

It's ironic, because earlier yesterday (before I heard of Matt's signing), I saw (on ESPN, at the gym) that the "Bungles" was looking at "Pac(ked)Man" YOnes...and I was PO'd (because I immediately thought of Matt getting screwed over). I hope he's still sharp & gets a chance to start & then gets many passes thrown to him.

Dixie, your nicknames you come up with are hilarious. "Pac(ked)Man" YOnes lol. My favourite of yours though is Lame Kitten lol. I detest Lane, so it really strikes a cord with me. Didn't you call Urban Meyer, "Urban Cryer" or something too lol. Good stuff!

We must keep in mind too, that the media's mantra that Jones was a coke addict is not necessarily correct. He was caught with it once and it could have been occasional "party/social" useage. If he was caught with coke a second time after rehab, I wouldn't have felt bad about him being out of the league. But the guy's off the stuff and is a serious talent and deserves to be back in the league.

It's very funny. I think it helps lighten the depressive/angry moods that can come with the amount of white players that get screwed, we all need a good laugh.

You should check RB Nile Knapp and Marc Mauro's highlight videos in the H.S section. Unbelievable that these two freaks don't have FBS scholarships.

I told Dixie the same thing ToughJ. Some of those names he has for players kill me. Anyways now that Jones is signed he has plenty of time to get in excellent shape though I suspect he already is. He's leaner so he should be even better than before. He can be a deep threat for Carson Palmer and I know Carson can get him the ball.

actually, i am worried about Palmer's arm strength, i don't want Jones to be nothing more than a qick slant guy, that will kill him as he's not as nimble as Welker or Amendola. he should be used to his best abilities as a deep threat but can CArson get him the ball? stay tuned!

I had called him Urban Cryer...especially now since he signed NOT ONE full-white in his latest recruiting class out of 28! Didn't like him before..now really don't!!

The Bengals could have used Matt Jones vs the NYJets defense...

With David Lee(NBA-Knicks) getting into the All-Star Game after all...and Matt Jones signing..this week has been a positive one! Now if we can find a new team for Kevin Curtis...hopefully his injuries have healed..he has a few years left in the tank!

I vote Urban Meyer(Cryer) to be the next Massa of college football. Massa Meyer will have no trouble replacing Bowden.

@Dixie, those nicknames are great! We all need a good laugh every once in a while.

Congrats to Matt Jones finally getting signed, it's been a long year or so since he was released. It was very frustrating seeing the Matt Jones thread updated, hoping that it was good news, but just still more waiting. 2010 could potentially be a great year for white WRs with Jones back for the Bengals; Collie and Edelman sure to do well; Welker, Curtis and Gonzalez coming back off of injury; hope for Finneran, Nelson, and Urban to do well; and high hopes for rookies Shipley, Decker, Cooper, Komar, White and Meier!

Also I believe Chris McGaha should get drafted. Meier is supposedly a fullback according to NFLdraftscout. That's pretty ridiculous.

Interesting situation.

For Jones, not so interesting. But, if he's got any sense at all. he's learned an important lesson. Also, any White guy with any hope of making the nfl has learned as well from his predicament. The "good" thing to come out of this thing is he's got a shot at hooking up with a real QB now. All we can hope for is that he makes it and is able to have a good year coming up.

I hope Jones is able to put this baloney behind him and just focus on being the best wr in the league now.

One thing is for certain. Jones has to learn that he cannot get away with things he may see other players do.

Here's a decent article from Bleacher Report. However, it does have a glaring factual error, where the author asserts that Jones' release by Jax "came following a drug test that provided evidence for alcohol in his systemâ€"which was a violation to a plea agreement that had been reached following his second arrest." Actually the plea agreement came after his first and only arrest; the drinking of beer was found to be a violation of that agreement.

Why Matt Jones May Turn out to Be Low-Risk, High-Reward For Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals signed former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones to a one-year deal on Friday in hopes of improving a passing game that ranked 26th overall last season. He received offers from both the Bengals and Tennessee Titans, but felt Cincinnati would be a better fit.

After sitting out the 2009 season since no team showed interest in him, there seems to be mixed emotions from fans around the league about the signing because of Jones and his troubled past. The main reason why he was released by the Jaguars last March was because of his inability to stay out of trouble with the law.

Jones' release came following a drug test that provided evidence for alcohol in his systemâ€"which was a violation to a plea agreement that had been reached following his second arrest. He also received a three-game suspension by the league that season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Now, he looks for a fresh start with a Cincinnati team with a reputation for granting troubled players a second chance. Of course, there's a chance the risk may backfire for the Bengals if Jones is still the same troubled player who continues to run into trouble with the law.

However, what if the move works out in the team's favor?

The Bengals find themselves in a low-risk situation with the hope of a high-reward when it comes to Jones considering they are paying him $700,000â€"which is slightly above the league minimum. They're receiving a player who had enough talent and potential to be selected in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft.

He already has an advantage with his height at 6'6" and has explosive speed for a player his size. Cincinnati is in need of a deep threat after Chris Henry's death and Jones has the potential to make just as much of an impact, if not more.

If Jones can make an impact for the Bengals' offense next season and become a reliable target for Carson Palmer, it will make another success story for a player receiving a second chance and a fresh start. Of course if this happens, there's a good chance the Jaguars may feel the same frustration the Chicago Bears once felt.

If any team knows anything about frustration with one of their former troubled players succeeding elsewhere, it's the Bears. Chicago released Cedric Benson after he saw his fair-share of trouble with the law while failing to live up to expectations as a running back.

In his first full season as a starter with the Bengals, he ran for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games. He even finished with a career high 189 yards against his former team in a game at Paul Brown Stadium in Week Seven.

For all the Bengals and their fans know, the situation with Jones may work out just as good it did with Benson. All he has to do is be smart with his decisions and realize how lucky he is to be given a second chance with a team like Cincinnati.

Otherwise, he'll be back in unemployment before he knows it.

"Anonymous sources" on the Bengals rip into Jones. "Anonymous sources" are ubiquitous in the U.S. media. No one can ever know whether it's a legitimate source or justquotes the writer of the article made up to reinforce his point of view.

Bengals sources unimpressed by the Joneses

The Cincinnati Bengals returned to their roots last week by signing wide receiver Matt Jones(notes) and working out cornerback Adam "Pacman"Â￾ Jones. The Jones boys, a pair of 2005 first-round NFL draft busts, are well-documented examples of recalcitrant youth rather than of NFL success.

That's why the Bengals, who make a habit of giving second chances to troubled players, were kicking the tires off of them. The Bengals, who are desperately looking for a wide receiver to replace the late Chris Henry, signed Matt Jones and passed on Adam Jones

Sadly, the word from two team sources is that neither of the Joneses figures to make it back to the NFL in the regular season based on their condition. Matt Jones, a 6-foot-6, 218-pounder who once ran a 4.37 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine, didn't exactly impress the football people with the Bengals despite getting signed.

"It was one of the worst workouts I have ever seen,"Â￾ one of the sources said. "I don't care how fast his 40 time is or was, he's a slow-twitch athlete."Â￾

What that means is that Jones, who is a repeat offender in the NFL's substance abuse program and did not play in 2009, doesn't move very quickly over short areas, such as the 10- and 20-yard areas where most pass routes are run. That's a major reason why Jones had only one season with more than 41 receptions in his four years with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being the No. 21 overall pick.

"He obviously has great size, but not even that is much of an advantage when you don't move very fast,"Â￾ the other source said. "He's not really the solution to what we need."Â￾

One of his former coaches with the Jaguars said the onus is completely on Jones.

"He has always had the athletic ability,"Â￾ the coach said. "The desire, that's another matter. All I'll say is that it's up to Matt what kind of player he wants to be."Â￾

As for Pacman Jones, the word was even worse.

"He worked out, but he wasn't really ready to work out, if you know what I'm saying,"Â￾ said the first of the two Cincinnati sources. "If he really wants to get back in the league, I don't know what he's been doing to get ready for it."Â￾

Beyond the workout, Pacman didn't endear himself to management very much when he gave a bunch of excuses about his litany of arrests and run-ins with the law over his career.

"There wasn't a lot of consistency with his explanations,"Â￾ the source said.

Sad day when they're comparing Matt Jones and Pac Man in the same article.

Yeah right! He can out run everyone on the field but he is still slow. I hate these guys. Who were the sources? Couple of bruvas? Jason Cole can be a real twit. And lumping Matt with that skunk Pac-man is absurd.
