I'm hoping that this second round game will be the last time we have to hear a female color commentator this year. It's not as if she isn't pretty bad at it. I can't imagine this particular voice, or any female voice, tests well with any focus group of college basketball fans, even the DWF sh*tlibs or normiecons who would not be so explicit. I visualize a 6'1 butch lesbian with spiky short hair, which is not the mental image I want to have when watching anything save maybe gymnastics, volleyball, or olympic fencing.
This raises another question. Can you imagine something like 'Miracle on Ice,' or even a regular buzzer-beater, being called by a female? The excitement and inflection in a man's voice relays the significance of the moment. Wouldn't you subconsciously think that an excited female just wants to rut with the winning male athletes? Even if you had to suspend the butch lesbian mental image, I would assume biology trumps any cosmopolitan appreciation of sports. No one voted for it, and the majority should not want it.
Of course, our preferences are not the point. They are just
selling us "burgers."
I noticed one or two very mundane black commentators shoehorned into token duty in the first round. On an upbeat note, I actually really enjoyed listening to Avery Johnson call games. He's enthusiastic, upbeat, and has a lot of insight on technique and mentality. I thought that his strong southern drawl was very endearing; unique to hear on a national broadcast, but ironically this will probably cap his career ceiling.
