Maris Briedis. Never heard of him. Latvian. Wow! He was giving Charr - who's been in with the best of them - a boxing lesson all fight long, but I didn't see a KO like that coming! And he behaved like a White man too. A negro would have been braying and preening and pounding on its chest but Briedis showed sportsmanship and concern for his downed opponent. Also I think this is only his first official fight as a heavyweight!

There was another impressive performance by Briedis today, taking out Danie Venter in just two rounds. He did better against the tough Venter than Usyk.

Briedis definitely deserves a cruiserweight world title shot.

Too bad this talented cruiserweight couldn't find a more meaningful fight, for example against a ranked opponent.

I agree. His opponent doesn't even deserve to be in with Briedis. Fights like this are a complete waste of time and are to me an indication of poor management.

Once Breidis got comfortable and found his range it was all over. Great display of power punching! It's odd how the cruiser weights get overlooked. It really is an exciting weight class. The punch like heavyweights but can move like middleweights.

In fact they would have been heavyweights up until the modern era. 176 and over was in the heavyweight division up until 1979-1983, depending on which organization.

Briedis dominates Huck to win vacant WBC cruiserweight world title

Cruiserweight Mairis Briedis (22-0, 18 KOs) claimed the vacant WBC world title with a one-sided twelve round unanimous decision over two-time world champion Marco Huck (40-4-1, 27 KOs) on Saturday night at the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Germany.

In a bout that failed to deliver the excitement we hoped for, Briedis frustrated the normally aggressive Huck with his power and movement. Huck, who for the most part was taken out of his game, tried to up the pressure late to no avail. Briedis was simply the better fighter. Scores were 116-111, 117-110, 118-109. In addition to the WBC green belt, Briedis claimed Huck’s IBO belt.

If Usyk wasn't around I would say Breidis is the best. But, Usyk moves around like a Welterweight so Breidis will not better him. It is, however, a pleasant position for whites to be in where the number 1 and 2 of the division are head and shoulders above the rest.

As far as I can tell Whites have all the major belts now. Lebedev is still the WBA champion(Shumenov is the regular champion), Gassiev is the IBF and the two fighters you mentioned are both champions.

As for Breidas his skills look decent but you would have had to favor a prime Huck to chop him down. The wars Huck went through have dulled his reflexes and he is an old 32.

Ps. the Cruiserweight division has never been stronger since the division adopted the 200 pound limit. Before amateur stars would skip this division because it was nearly impossible for them to sweat off another 11 pounds to make weight. Now they can thrive in this division, I remember the days when fat former 175 pound fighters and journeyman won belts and paraded around as champions. That kind of fighter can't sniff a belt anymore.

I like Usyk, but I'm rooting for Briedis to win on Saturday. He's had less opportunity and more to overcome on his way to his WBC world title.

Nothing against Brieds but I would prefer Usyk to win. Usyk is probably the better boxer and would beat Briedis 8, 9 or ten times out of ten. Usyk also plans to go to Heavyweight assuming he wins the tourney.
