Las Vegas Raiders General Thread

Interesting article regarding draft pick Tommy Mellott, who was cut and then not added to the practice squad. It appears GM John Spytek isn't too happy about that, and also about the decision to sign washed up Amari Cooper. Looks like Plantation Pete is calling a lot of the shots in Vegas.

If this is so, the GM doesn’t have the authority to say you need to keep him as one of the 15 practice squad spots? We’re expected to believe that all of those spots are critical and not to develop a guy picked as a development player? Such a farce.

Glad the Raiders are cutting the awful Geno Smiff. It would be great if he, Russel Wilson, Tyrod Taylor and Josh Johnson all just disappeared from the league. They are all washed.

I think Smiff and Taylor still have some value in the league but Wilson and Johnson are washed in Johnson's case I don't know if you could even call him that as that would mean you he some level of competency.

Does anybody think Johnson had black mail tapes on some owners or was a butt pirate to some chicken hawk coach his hanging around the fringes of the league is perplexing to say the least.

I love this signing. The most important thing they can do for Fernando Mendoza is protect him and give him time to throw. A top 3 center is a great way to start the offseason.

At this point, I hope Maxx stays put. They are building a fairly White friendly core and I’m hopeful they can ascend quickly if Mendoza is as good as we think he is.

On the subject of fullbacks and the displacement of the few Whites one left the Raiders sign the awful Connor Heyward who has done next to nothing in his career besides having a successful older brother in the league.

Raiders sign Kirk Cousins, where he'll likely start while Fernando Mendoza learns from him in '26:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Raiders QB Kirk Cousins’ contract is a five-year, $172 million deal that in reality is one-year, $20 million. For the 11th consecutive season, Cousins will play on a fully guaranteed contract. While his contract is technically for five years, $172 million, in reality he’s set to receive $20 million for one year with the Raiders. The Falcons are paying Cousins $8.7 million this season, the Raiders another $1.3 million and the Raiders have guaranteed Cousins a $10 million roster bonus on the third day of the 2027 new league year. One of the greatest bag-getters in league history, Cousins, who turns 38 in August, has another guaranteed contract in hand and is set up to hit free agency again next offseason.

Disappointing decision by Cousins since all signs point to Mendoza as their pick and probably day 1 starter. I figured he would at least wait to hear if Rodgers was returning to the Steelers. I’d rather see Cousins on the field rather than holding a clipboard. Needless to say he is making a lot of money.

I'd say there's a good chance Cousins starts the season and possibly the entire season if he's effective, before Mendoza takes over. He's a wandering very good backup/spot starter at this point in his career. His Achilles rupture really set him back but he's certainly done very well for himself salary-wise.

If Rodgers retires I'd rather see Will Howard and Mason Rudolph battle it out for the starting job. Mike McCarthy has also made noises about drafting a QB, so we'll have to see how the draft goes to get a better picture.
