Earlier today, Khabib Allakhverdiev, 18-0 (8 KO) became a WBA and IBO unified world champion at Light Welterweight (140 lbs) by defeating Joan Guzman.

This is a tremendous win for Khabib, as only 2 or 3 years ago, Guzman was genuinely spoken of in P4P-level terms, and was thought as being a very talented, speedy boxer. I even remember there was a time when Guzman was seen as a possible "tough challenge" to Floyd Mayweather. Guzman was also undefeated before this fight, which makes it even more satisfying. For Khabib to claim this win is a great achievement!

Khabib's win further strengthens European hold in the sport, and its amazing to see Europeans not only dominate in higher weight classes, but also lower weight classes such as 147 and 140.

Looking over Khabib's record he also has some solid wins over South African Kaizer Mabuza (KO 4), Ignacio Mendoza (TKO 7), and once-solid Nate Campbell (W Tech. Dec. 6).

I actually had the pleasure of watching one of Khabib's early pro fights, his fight with Roberto Acevedo back in 2007. At that time, I thought Khabib looked very good but not quite championship level. Obviously, he has improved quite substantially since then and is now a world class champion!

Great to see another European world champion champion (a unified one no less) and he totally deserves his own thread!

Actually, he often works out with Kostya Tszyu, a former great of the past, and the same trainer who works with other successful Russians of today such as Alex Povetkin and Denis Lebedev.

Great to see Russians adding another accomplished champion to the sport, and its especially great that Europeans are succeeding in lower weight categories.

Everyone is aware of European dominance in the higher weight classes. So its nice to also see smaller Euro champs as well.

The referee Pabon did all he could to help Guzman, not counting at least two knockdowns and repeatedly admonishing Khabib for nothing. Guzman basically quit because he was getting beaten up, it should have been a TKO.

Even some in the mainstream media have acknowledged the ref was unfair to Khabib last night:

The knockdown in the 4th round couldn't have been any cleaner, the ref was obviously shady.

The referee was on the take.

I knew Allakhverdiev had a great chance to win this fight. He has terrific speed, combinations and doesn't neglect body punching. His victory was no surprise to me having seen him fight a couple of times before.

Unified World Champion Khabib Allakhverdiev won by 11th round TKO today over French-African Souleymane M'Baye.

Allakhverdiev dropped the African twice, and then stopped him in the 11th after knocking out his mouthpiece with an uppercut. Allakhverdiev showed some nice punching power and timing.

To give credit where its due, the African was in great shape and gave a great effort and fought bravely. Actually, the fight could have been stopped earlier than it was but M'Baye fought with a lot of heart to keep the fight going.

Great win for Russian World Champion Khabib Allakhverdiev.

He's the real deal. I would say that I wanted to see him VS either Broner or Bradley, but then again I know that even if he wins 11 out of the 12 rounds against them he will get robbed!

Khabib was robbed in his last fight 18 months ago, he should have won the title. Since then, the promoters have been ruining his career by keeping him inactive.

But finally he'll be back. On Saturday night, he'll be fighting for a vacant title against Adrien Broner.

Allakhverdiev was robbed in his last fight and being White, Non-American, and fighting a Negro American in Cincinnatti, OH he can expect no favours from the referee, judges, or media.

Allakhverdiev is a solid fighter, great boxer with good skills but a somewhat limited punch. Broner hits hard but defensively not very sound and he is liable to be outboxed. I see this as a 50-50 fight, depends which man comes to fight more with a better game plan. Unfortunately with the fight being on Showtime and in Ohio (Broner's home state), Broner will have every advantage possible in this fight.

I could see a scenario where Khabib outboxes the Negro only to be robbed by the corrupt Amerikkkan judges.

I'll be rooting for Khabib to pull the upset, but I think it will be unlikely and even if he wins he will be robbed. I cant stand these sh1tty Amerikan fighters who have every advantage on their side in the fights (referees, judges, media).

How is $50,000 every 18 months supposed to pay for training costs and everything else? How is he supposed to live on a fraction of that, after expenses?

And Broner is getting $1,000,000? This is a clear example of black privilege in boxing.

Not to mention like BS2 said, this fight is in the US so Khabib probably needs a knockout. You know if Khabib out boxes the loudmouth he will get robbed by the home cookers. This fight worries me because Khabib doesn't have great power.

Out of all the despicable fighters out there, and there are quite a few, Broner may be the worst offender yet. He's very arrogant and just an all around pos! He barely got past Malinaggi and I think Khabib is a better fighter than Paulie.
