The James Webb Space Telescope was launched this morning.

Its ability to image infrared light will allow it to directly see some planets orbiting distant stars. While it is very unlikely that the facility will be able to see Earth-like planets, it will be able to see the reflection of infrared light off planets comparable to Jupiter, and it will be able to see young planets that are hot enough to be molten -- much like Earth was when it was first formed. Detailed information about exoplanets will allow scientists to better understand how planetary systems are formed and give us a better idea of whether our own solar system is unusual.

I remember the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope many years ago and the subsequent successful repair missions. This, of course, was when America had its own Space Shuttle and didn't have to resort to hitching rides with the Russians.

All great scientific achievements are by white people: Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Edison, the Wright brothers, Yuri Gagarin, Neil Armstrong, Edwin Hubble, James Webb, etc. The non-whites should be grateful.

It's important to note that whites "punch above their weight" when it comes to innovation, much more innovation relative to population size. This is important to adjust for when comparing accomplishment.

Every reasonable, intelligent person on the planet recognized the tone of that and respected the Apollo astronauts, the space program, and their achievements. Even the Soviets congratulated NASA after Apollo 11 landed on the moon.

While that's an unfathomable price tag for regular joes like me and you, our government ships that much to the Ukraine (via laundered defense contracts) every few weeks now. All of which seems patently obvious to everyone here and likely to everyone that we each know well. The trouble is that somehow we keep supporting the regime.

I have no clue how to change it or if it can be changed at all.

one thing I do know is that when I attend sporting events now and I hear the national anthem, it no longer makes my chest swell with pride.


If anything, It makes me feel angry for ever feeling proud given how messed up things have become in just my lifetime.

NASA isn’t likely to make any huge breakthroughs is my guess because it’s so difficult to commercialize any of it so it’s just interesting sink hole for our money.

The money spent on the Webb Telescope is but a tiny fraction of the trillions spent on the useless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And you are correct, the government sends many times more to Ukraine, so that Russians and Ukrainians can kill each other while (((Kerensky))) and (((Blinken))) gleefully smirk.

The first few photos are amazing. I've always had a strong curiosity about what's out there, and the Webb telescope is bringing the universe into much sharper focus. Scientific advancement is always worth the money.

We went to the moon. This is a fact. On July 20, 1969, man first stood on the moon; on December 18, 1972, man stood on the moon for the last time. What happened to end the dream of space exploration, left instead to the colorful imagination of Trekkies and science fiction fans believing some diverse band of humans could navigate the heavens in a Utopian future?

The US Government neutered NASA by forcing a much different mission upon the space agency: diversity and the promotion of blacks. We went to the moon. On multiple occasions.
