I am still ticked that Jaxson wasn't invited to the combine. He has been a great safety for the Aggies on a pretty dismal defense. I am glad he had a good showing at the Pro Day. Notice the code words used to describe him: not big enough (although he is the same size as many of the safeties invited to the combine), not fast enough (even though Texas Tech's Slay ran a 4.84 at the combine).

I have been following Jaxson since high school and he was an outstanding running back and kick returner before being recruited to play safety in college. Just because of his skin color he is assumed to be not as fast and thus not allow to play running back in college. Appel has had some tough breaks this season with injuries and that has hurt his stock with the NFL. Too bad.

According to DD. Appels two forty times were 4.54 and 4.46. He has all the speed in the world to play safety at the next level. Hopefully he made enoug of an impression at his pro day to be drafted.
The Combine sure didn't want white safeties or cornerbacks, which is going to make it tough on all of them to get much of a chance in the NFL. Same old same old. . .
I have a buddy who was an all conference linebacker at the D2 level. He weighed 235, ran a 4.5 at a regional combine, and was, still is real strong. A few of the black LBs he outperformed at the combine he was at were drafted. He didn't even get invited to any camps. He's been relegated to being an all-league linebacker in the NIFL. He could be more. It's a shame.

Utah had their Pro Day Workouts today.Travis LaTendresse ran a 4.53 in the 40 with a 35 inch vertical leap. This should help him get some looks from NFL Teams. He is between 6'1 and 6'2 with speed and great hands. He is kind of a Drew Bennett type.

This isn't directly related to the Draft but I didn't feel like starting a new thread with it. LB Derek Smith has been re-signed by the 49ers to a three year contract. He was an unrestricted free agent.

While a few white defensive players like Urlacher, Z. Thomas and Lynch get publicized, Smith is much more typical of the average white NFL defender in that he is an excellent player but toils in virtual anonymity.

From the article on Smith's new contract:

"Though not one of the NFL's best-known linebackers, Smith has been one of the league's most productive for nearly a decade. He has been the 49ers' defensive leader since signing before the 2001 season as a free agent from Washington, where he was the Redskins' leading tackler in each of his four seasons."

"Smith made at least 100 tackles in every year of his career, including 163 last season, while missing just four games in nine seasons. Only Miami's Zach Thomas (10) and Tampa Bay's Derrick Brooks (10) have longer active streaks of 100-tackle seasons."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2357136

Smith is one of the most productive linebackers in the NFL yet has never made a Pro Bowl and is virtually unknown. If he hadn't been productive right from the start of his rookie year he probably would have been cut or been turned into a White Special Teams Demon like a lot of linebackers are. There should be a lot more Derek Smiths playing linebacker in the NFL, publicized or unpublicized.

Good stuff about Derek Smith Don. I wish him continued success, no matter if he gets rewarded for it or not. He'll get rewarded here if nowhere else!

This sums up why whites at the speed positions can't catch a break in the NFL. Quote from DraftDaddy.com regarding Jaxson Appel:

"Appel is player we had ranked among our top 10 safeties all season and was in our top 5 for a while based on his career production. After he didn't get a sniff at the Senior Bowl or the Combine (which invited 64 defensive backs), we dropped him from our top 15 safety prospects because a source told us he was "too slow", which is why he wasn't really highly regarded by NFL teams....His recent 40 times show Appel is much faster than anyone believed and the sad part is, his great career as a four year starter basically went unnoticed to many scouts. Appel has a chance to be drafted, but history shows about 85 to 90% of drafted players not invited to the Combine are selected between the 5th and 7th round."

Now what made the "source" say he was too slow? Did the "source" time him in a 40 before his Pro Day?

Scott Ware ran a 4.72 and 4.74 at the combine. Eric Smith put up more impressive numbers with 4.69 and 4.67 with a 40 inch vert which was I believe top 5 for safeties. I think he will get drafted. Ware is vert iffy unless he puts up better numbers at his pro day which I hope he does.

AJ Hawk is a complete freak of nature. He ran in the 4.4 range and posted a 40 inch vertical. This kid is just flat out amazing. Can you imagine him in a slam dunk contest with his hair flying as high as him.He would probably tear the rim down.He should go in the first round between the 5th & 8th picks!

The amazing thing about him is he just keeps getting better and better. He also seems like a good guy. He and Urlacher will show you don't have to be a murderer to be the best linebackers in the NFL.

I got this from a akron nespaper this morning that said that Hawk actually clocked in the 4.38 range. Phenominal. That's Urlacher freakish time. Bobby Carpenter ran in the high 4.5's and that is only being at 90% because of the knee.

Yeah the Cleveland Plain Dealer said that Anthony Gonzalez ran like a 4.29 at pro day! That is actually phenomenal, maybe a little fast timing, but still awesome!

It seems like white athletes are getting quicker and quicker lately. I think there are two reasons for it. One, there are alot of speed schools and training programs out there. Two..they realize that 40 times and shuttle runs are everything if you want a pro career or sometimes even a chance for a productive college career.

Nate Soelberg finally ran in his pro day workout and ended up running in the high 4.3 range! That is blazing speed despite the fact that some predicted he might hit the 4.2 range. This kid should get a chance to be a corner. He was a track stud in the mountain west conf. Draftdaddy predicts he will be a late 2nd day pick or a free agent.Good luck to Nate!

ok guys..im a MAJOR ny jet fan...and this is my draft...

#1 AJ HAWK-quite simply the best linbacker to enter the draft sinse brian ulracher, enough said.

#2 MIKE HASS-the best reciever to enter the draft sinse torry holt. we all know the reason why he will slip to the 2nd round, but better for ny :)

#3 NICK HARTIGAN: 6-2 235LBS...and a 4.53 40 yard dash, the white steven jackson, just what ny needs.

#4 NATE SOLEBERG: 6 footer cover corner with 4.38 speed

#5 NICK TURNBULL: Athletic freak, jason sehorn clone, corner/safty hybrid, just as good as michael huff, has everything huff has except skin tone.

#6 ANTHONLY SCHLEGAL: Powerfull MLB, just what we need, may even push much weaker and smaller jonathan vilma for the starting job.

#7 STEVE GREGORY: Another very good cover corner with 4.3ish speed.

there you have it guys..We get the best linebacker & wide receiver in the draft, blaziing fast cover corners, a hybrid sehorn clone, a tailback w/ size & speed & a top MLB prospect. let me know what you think.

There is no way in hell Anthony Schegel will last until the 6th RD. I wouldn't be surprised if he was gone in the 3rd.

the interesting thing about today's NFL is that you wouldn't have to "waste" a draft pick on any of the non-existent white athletes who somehow permeate the game but no one knows about (ie., Turnbull, Hartigan, Soelberg, Gregory, or i could continue if you wish...) because no team will draft them.

a GM, if he so chose, could get EVERY ONE of those guys as an undrafted free agent and use his draft to get players other teams think are better, then trade 'em and upgrade the roster that way as well.

impossible you say? ha! nobody in the NFL really thinks those guys can play. wait and see. this BS negrophile indroctination will leave all of those guys (among many others we know about) on the board and available after the draft. i don't understand it at all, but you can take it to the bank. just look at last year for a recent example. BYU's Brandon Heaney measured out as the fastest and quickest DB available at his Pro Day and showed his toughness by playing through multiple injuries during his collegiate career. where is he now? not getting any snaps in the NFL is where.

the NFL stands for No F*cking Light-skinned skill guys.

Ethan Kilmer...I hope this guy gets a shot. If you guys watched the Orange Bowl he was the WR who made that amazing TD catch.

From Draftdaddy.com

Who was the best special teams coverage player in America in 2005?

Without a doubt, and we've been saying since October of 2005, it's former Penn State walk-on Ethan Kilmer, who recorded an eye-popping 25 tackles (19 solo) on special teams last season. We reported Kilmer's story a long time ago -- probably the only draft site on the Net to even mention his name -- and reported he was an absolute physical freak.

We have just gotten unofficial reports from Penn State's Pro Day today and it appears Kilmer stole the show, running a 4.35 in the 40 yard dash. We imagine his vertical was well over 40". As we said during the 2005 season, he's worth a draft pick on special teams ability alone, with upside at wide receiver. Kilmer, who has very little football experience, is a fascinating story.

Below, we will re-post a story we did on Kilmer several months ago in the blog:

Penn State senior wide receiver Ethan Kilmer, who had 6 huge receptions for 81 yards and 1 touchdown in the Orange Bowl, isn't your typical former walk-on. No, not by a long shot. Few walk-ons possess reported 4.4 40 speed and a Michael Jordan like vertical leap of over 40 inches, which is what Lions QB Michael Robinson claims the "freak of nature" Kilmer can do.

Watching Kilmer, who's been a backup at safety and wide receiver for the Lions, in limited chances this season, we are absolutely fascinated with his potential. He only had 15 receptions in 2005, but gained 238 yards (16 yard average) and 3 touchdowns on those plays. When Kilmer, who's solidly built at a bit over 5' 11" and 205 pounds, gets by defensive backs, it's "light's out", because few players in college football will catch him from behind. Also, perhaps more importantly, Kilmer is an absolute special teams demon -- 25 special teams tackles (19 solo) in 2005.

So, why was a player with his unique set of athletic skills a walk-on?

Well, much of that has to do with the fact that Kilmer had almost no football experience (played briefly as a freshman) in high school, instead opting to play basketball and run track (high jump). Also, he refused to play any sports at the start of his college career at tiny Shippensburg University, because he wanted to focus on academics. Eventually friends told Kilmer he was wasting his natural ability by not playing sports and he transferred to Penn State and tried out for Joe Paterno's team, which he had little problem making (played in 2004 and 2005 only).

At this point, it would be foolish of us to project Kilmer as a likely draft pick. But if his raw numbers are anywhere close to what the folks at Penn State believe, expect NFL teams to get an eyeful of him at Pro Day and then consider drafting him in the latter rounds or signing him as a priority free agent. Also, as we mentioned, he may be the best special teams coverage player in the nation, which is very significant.

As NFL legend Bill Parcells has stated, you draft for potential and look for players with either size or speed (or both). Kilmer seems to have the elite speed and athletic ability NFL teams look for, which may help make up for his lack of football experience. One NFL scout told a Pennsylvania paper Kilmer reminded him of Don Beebe, who was an obscure, small school star in the latter part of 1980's. Beebe literally came out of nowhere to have long and productive NFL career as special teamer and speed receiver.
