He started off the year with a 1-6 record, but nowhe's at 9-10, wilth an ERA hovering at 4.00.If he gets up over .500 he'll probably get a lot of sportswriters votes for the Cy Young. If they can't swing that, he might become the first major leaguer to winthe - Comeback Player-- of the year award.....for the same year.

Dontrelle Willis does it off smoke and mirrors. He is not that talented. Most of the young guys on their staff are more talented than he is

Willis' career record in four seasons -- 56-38. Take away his 22-10 last year and he's 34-28. His career ERA is 3.75, considerably higher than genuine superstars like Clemens, Maddux and Johnson. He's not a special talent and will probably have a relatively short career. There's still no "Great Black Hope" in sight when it comes to black American pitchers.

Alot of sucess Willis enjoyed came from his pitching motion but hitters have now gotten used to it and Willis becomes an average pitcher.

To be honest, you can't compare a lot of guys to Clemens or Maddux. Also, 34-28 is still a winning record, but they were making him out to be HOF type guy. He won't reach 300 wins. People with funky motions don't last long in the starting role, Hideo Nomo comes to mind.

Good or not Willis gets media attention all out of proportion to this accomplishments. Last week he pitched a good game and it was Yahoo sports lead baseball story instead of several big pennant race games. That sh*t is just blatent propagandizing.

According to the police report, patrol officers observed Willis
disembark a 2007 black two-door Bentley on the 1200 block of
Washington Avenue. Willis left the vehicle double-parked and
urinated on the street before getting back behind the wheel.

The officers pulled over Willis, who was only able to produce the
vehicle registration when asked for his driving documents. In their
report, the officers noted Willis "appeared confused and disoriented"
and "had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor
of alcoholic beverage."

Willis, 24, failed a field sobriety test and later refused a breath test.
He was arrested and transported to Miami-Dade County jail, where
he was booked at 5:56 a.m. and is being held on $1,000 bond.

Who was the last really good black starting pitcher who had any staying power? Ferguson Jenkins? His best seasons were 35 years ago. Vida Blue peaked in the '70s. It's a shame white racismcontinues to preventGod'sChosen Athletesfrom excelling as pitchers.

How Dontrelle Willis gets any pub while my boy CC Sabathia is quietly having a Cy Young season is beyond me.

Very true, DW...Dwight Gooden, Doc Ellis, the list is long, and it looks as if Dontrelle is ahead of their pace. Black pitchers fade quickly when they hit 35

Career longevity in pitching is definitely another "white advantage", as we discussed in other threads.

Tom Glavine, David Wells, Roger Clemens, Jamie Moyer, Curt Schilling, Bob Feller, etc..the list is long.

Dontrelle is having another banner season, following up last year's 12-12 record with an 8-13 mark so far in '07. His ERA currently stands at 4.96. But at least he'll never lose his charisma.

Might need a new thread but Greg Maddux just notched his tenth win giving him 20 straight 10 win seasons. That's even more than Cy Young. Rarified air indeed.

Quiet, humble, professional and successful. The Professor epitomizes the white athlete.

Saw that in the paper this morning.
I'm a long time Maddux fan, but I'd like to point something out about the legendary Cy Young.
If you take his twenty worst seasons for wins, they still total 425 victories. That's still 82 more victories than Maddux's career total. And that includes four seasons in which he didn't reach double digit victories.

Yeah RW, Cy Young was a beast. I consider his record of 511 wins to be one of the few truly unbreakable records in sports.

Young's win total is perhaps baseball's leading "unbreakable" record, but he had a distinct advantage Maddux. Young started quite a few more games per season, and almost always completed them -- 815 career starts, 749 complete games, 511 wins. Maddux has had 700 career starts with 343 wins but just 109 complete games.

To win just under half his starts in this era of relief specialists is very impressive. I don't know how Maddux would have done in Young's era and vice versa, but I think he ranks among the top five pitchers ever, maybe eventhe best if he can pitch effectively for another couple of seasons or more.

I think Maddux will pass Clemens and be in rarified air in the alltime wins list. He may surpass Warren Spahn as the post WWII alltime wins leader which is an awesome accomplishment.

If Maddux pitches 2 or 3 more years after this one he will probably end up 3rd on the all time wins list, in the top ten in strikeouts with over 3,500, and added a couple more gold gloves to his trophy case. He has also been a model of consistency as he has hardly ever missed a start.

But the most impressive thing about Maddux is what he did in his prime years. He put up numbers that rank #1 in my opinion. He did what guys like Walter Johnson and Sandy Koufax did but he did it in a hitters era, not a pitchers era or dead ball era. If Pedro Martinez didn't have a couple of brilliant seasons, Maddux could have 5 or 6 Cy Young awards.

Sadly, what Maddux does and how he does it goes against the grain of what Major League Baseball is looking for in their players. His quiet, humble personality is too white for their purposes so he almost never receives primetime coverage for his accomplishments.

Dontrelle gave up 7 runs in 3 innings today. His record is 8-15, with an ERA of 5.27! Hitters aren't fooled by his herky-jerky moves anymore.

That's because all he ever had going for him was that gimmick delivery. He has said so himself. He was a terrible pitcher when he was younger. Then he started flailing around and nobody could hit him. But Dontrelle has never had any 'stuff'.
I've been griping about this to anyone who would listen for the past three years. As he gets older, his body isn't going to allow him to make those big exaggerated movements. Once he loses his ability to disguise his release point (and I suspect he only has one good year left), his career will be over. General Managers don't seem to understand this simple concept, though.
I fear my beloved Cardinals will end up with him in the near future, as Jocketty and Duncan have completely ruined the starting rotation by constantly pursuing Duncan's infamous 'projects'.

Dontrelle Willis is supposed to make his first start of the season soon for the Tigers, miraculously overcoming all of his mental problems to grace the club with his presence.

Coming off an 0-2 season in 2008 with a 9.38 ERA while being the recipient of close to $10 million, Dementia Train Willis is finally ready to make more contributions to the success of the Tigers' franchise.

Good luck, Tigers. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

I have to finish some MLB updates today with a Dontrelle Willis report.

The man that was paid about $30 million over the past 3 years bottomed out-and I mean he hit rock-bottom-in the Giants farm system with 8 appearances and a 6.14 ERA. Hopefully, he will find no employer next year. Edited by: Van_Slyke_CF
