Nebraska's Taylor Martinez faster than Denard Robinson, tougher for Michigan State to stop

"He's faster than Denard (Robinson). Even though he (Denard) thinks he's as fast as (Usain) Bolt or whoever, (Martinez) is flat out faster," said defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi when asked to compare the Cornhuskers' third-year starter to the other dual-threat quarterbacks Michigan State has faced.

and the dwfs posting in the comments can 't believe it. Criticizing the coach who said it, some saying he was only saying that because his defense got slaughtered and then they compare high school nike combine times, 4.38 for Denard Robinson and 4.47 for Martinez. Yes nobody improves their speed since high school. Martinez kind of reminds me of Matt Jones when he runs, when he finds and open hole, hes gone, outruns angles with ease.

There's also the fact that Robinson, at 5'11", 175lbs. suffers a much greater speed penalty from his pads and helmet than does the 6'1", 200lbs. Martinez.
Nobody ever takes that into account, but it's a serious factor in "in game" speed.
It doesn't suprise me at all that Martinez is faster on the football field.

(It's another reason why Jones was one of the fastest players to ever play the sport. Nearly all of his track speed translated to the field.)

This is probably the reason why many world class sprinters were busts in the NFL in the 60's and 70's. Prior to PED usage in track and field most sprinters were spindly guys who's game speed didn't compare to their work out speed. They also couldn't take a pounding that a sturdier player could take.

Beau Blankenship is about to play on national television ... you should check him out, if you've never had the chance.

also, tomorrow night on ESPNU Louisiana-Monroe takes on Arkansas State. if you like dual-threat quarterbacks and lots of offense, this one might be a treat. Browning (for ULM) and Aplin (ASU) are both dynamic playmakers, with either their arm or legs.

A-State also features a good, albeit vastly under-utilized, White wideout in Taylor Stockemer. their best defensive players is a White linebacker, Nathan Herrold, who is a beast. if he played in a bigger market, he'd likely be a household name. the Red Wolves' best d-lineman is an "overachiever," as well: Timothy Starson.

ULM's top receiving threat in an exciting passing game is a "precise route-running, blue collar, gym rat," Brent Leonard. Colby Harper is also a big part of the air attack. finally, fleet-footed "fullback" Mitchell Bailey gets a token carry every once in a while, in addition to being a White Special Team Demon.

it should be a fun game to watch, if you get the chance.

i've got the Ohio-Bowling Green game on while surfing the intra-webs, and an interesting spotlight just came on a player that i wasn't familiar with.

Bowling Green's Chris Jones, a senior defensive tackle, is tied for the national lead in sacks with 11.5 coming into tonight's game. wow! that's more than 22 FBS teams, according to the graphic.

here's an interesting profile on Jones: http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2012/11/bowling_greens_dt_jones_is_a_m.html

does it surprise anyone that he was lightly recruited? i thought not.

"The best thing about Chris is how good he is and how hard he works," Roussos said. "He never puts himself ahead of anybody, from freshmen to fifth-year seniors. It's always about the team, and he has every right to be different, with all of his accolades.

"On the field what sets him apart is his relentlessness, his physicality and endless energy. He never stops. He inspires you as a player. If Chris can go that hard, I can go a little harder."

All of this from a player who was lightly recruited out of Brownsburg, Ind.

"It came down to us, our rivals to the north [Toledo], and Ball State," Clawson said. "Part of it is he was undersized. He's not a 6-3, 6-4 guy. I think every Division I program, it's kind of a height range at every position that you want to recruit. But I think now we've become a little more apt to look at smaller tackles for two reasons: No. 1 is Chris. No. 2 the guy at Kent [Roosevelt Nix]. I mean, a lot of people passed on him because of height, and I think we all regret that.

"Now we consider more sawed-off guys at defensive tackle that play hard, play physical and play with a motor because of being able to play with Chris, and having to play against Nix."

i'm sure he's been mentioned on CF before, but i must've missed it. perhaps he'll get a shot at becoming one of the rarest figures in sport: the White defensive tackle in the NFL.

I looked on ULM's website, but I couldn't find any information about Browning's injury or his current status. Did you find a report that says he's good to go on Thursday?

Big weekend for two of our marquee guys and the top 2 heisman candidates:

Johnny "Football" Manziel goes against Saban and his affletes. Manziel will have the help of two of the best OTs in the land in Joeckel and Mathews and one of the best WRs in the country in Swope.

Colin Klein affirmed his worth last week when he was knocked out of the game and KSU was unable to move the ball. The media is making a big deal out of his injury but I have no doubt he will play. I also expect Klein to be rising up draft boards.

I sure do hope so, but I wouldnt "expect" it. Of course its an undeniable fact that if he was a negro he would be a top three pick for sure.
