All the best white players of the modern era grew up in very non-black places.

When Dirk was 15, he was in Bavaria in 1993.

When Jokic was 15, he was in Serbia in 2010.

When Stockton was 15, he was in Spokane, Washington in 1977.

When Luka was 15, he was in Madrid in 2014.

When Nash was 15, he was in British Columbia in 1989.

When Ginobili was 15, he was in Argentina in 1992.

Cooper Flagg grew up in Maine.

Different sport but Riley Moss and Cooper DeJean both grew up in Iowa and played there through University.

It's a well established phenomena at this point. If there are blacks available, the whites will get racially slotted. Most of the exceptions to this rule are either nepo babies or had to walk on/transfer.

Interesting take. The Watt bros are from a town of 30k, an hour outside of Kilwaukee. 92 percent honkey.

this anecdotal evidence supports what i wrote about several years ago in the thread titled Just run, baby!

to summarize, the only place you will find fast White sprinters is where there are only White kids available. if there are blacks available, you won’t find any Whites participating in the sprints.

Absolutely. If Luka was born in Detroit, he’d be an accountant. Jokic, Bird, Luka, Austin Reaves, probably never met a black person in their childhood. I’m pretty sure Lemaitre grew up in a White part of France. They weren’t racially slotted and brainwashed with the myth of black supremacy in sports. Unfortunately, Matthew Bowling grew up in Dallas. Apparently he believed the myth, eschewed the “White Lightning” moniker, and allowed his college coaches to move him to the more racially appropriate 400m.

Kevin Love is, also, from a very wealthy family in rural Oregon. Son of an ex-NBA first round pick and the nephew of Mike Love, iconic Beach Boys. List could go on and on.

Here's a better question: Name some White stars that grew up in ghetto areas?

Who is last notable white player to come from anywhere in (or around) New York City?

Might have to go back 40 (plus) years to find a real good one -- ex-Golden State Warriors star Chris Mullin?

Tom Gugliotta was from Long Island? And I have to assume Huntington Station was probably whiter when he was young -- seems to be a hotbed for MS-13 goblins now?

Was watching ESPN feature on the Hurley's. Bobby Hurley Jr. was basically the only White on his teams growing up in Jersey City. Hurley senior was a modern day White Shadow (classic TV show). But that was well over 30 years ago and he never panned out in the NBA, anyway?

Good question. Can’t think of any from NYC lately, off the top of my head.

Gillespie bros are from suburban Philly if I remember correctly. Donte D is from Delaware.

Hurley was only on his teams in Jersey City because his Dad was the coach there. I think it was at Saint Anthony's? To add some more data points, Christian Laettner was from Angola, which is a small town 20 miles outside of Buffalo. Tyler Herro was born in Milwaukee, but went to high school in a town that was above 90% White. Dalton Knecht went to high school in a fairly Hispanic area of Colorado, but I doubt there were many blacks there.

I think this carries over into high school recruiting a bit where you will very rarely see highly ranked White players out of the deep south for basketball. This contrasts a lot with other states that still have a fair amount of Blacks (like NY, IL, or CA) as those states usually have no shortage of ranked/highly ranked Whites.

Somewhat unfair to say Hurley didn't pan out in the NBA, which is true on its face, but he nearly died in an auto accident as a rookie.

This is a good thread. The key comes in middle school and AAU -- do not put a talented white player on a black team. They have earlier puberty, and will relegate the white kid to being a role player.

Good point. For an example, Cooper Flagg always played his AAU with Maine United, which I would imagine is one of the Whitest AAU teams. By the time he got to Monteverde for his last 3 years of high school, everyone knew about his talent.

Let me chime in here and comment on this if I'm understanding this subject. I've stated many times here that I had my son participate in track at around 10/11 years old. He had been playing mostly travel baseball, a 90% white sport, in the spring and summer, but was a little bored with it and wanted to play more football. I told him that track instead of baseball might be a better fit and it would improve his speed. I saw an ad in the paper from an AAU track and field coach looking for kids to participate. I took my son to a practice, and it was 90% black kids. He had some natural speed and was probably the third fastest kid on the team initially. There were two black kids slightly faster, but they had been training in 100/200M since they 7-8 years old or 2-3 years. After one year of training with the AAU track team, my son became the fastest 100/200 meter runner on the team. He won the NC AAU U13 100 meter state championship and was the anchor leg on the 4 x 100 team.
I don't know about being in the same neighborhood with black kids, but I suggest going where they are and competing with them as far as speed goes, especially in track. Far too many white kids are intimidated by black kids. I believe white kids need to be exposed to other athletes and events such as track and field if they want to get faster and become better. My sons track coach was black and taught him how to run faster. He was very fair. If you want to see speed, and become better yourself, you need to get exposed to it. The best way to do this is to get in touch with an AAU or USATF track team and coaches that know what they are doing whether black or white. There are also more individual speed instructors out there now than ever before.
I truly believe that he got much better by training and competing with the best.

EXCELLENT advice.

I remember when Mullin was playing at St. Johns SI did a story about him around the time of the draft and he said he went a few stops over from his Irish neighborhood in Brooklyn to a Black neighborhood to play pick up ball and he stated most pick up games had no White players beside himself.

Really the last era of NYC basketball that had any significant amount of White players was the generation before him that had Billy Cunningham who played in the Harlem games at Rucker Park. I also recall Kareem talking about the end of his pick up days in NYC and he stated when he first started playing in the games in Harlem and lower Manhattan roughly half of the players were White and by the time he was a top college prospect a half decade later only a few Italian sharp shooters were playing in these games. So this phenomenon was playing out well before Mullen started playing.

Good points by all. Yes, Bobby Hurley's accident did have a huge affect on his career, as did the poor medical care he received. It was reported he had, also, torn his ACL in the accident, which was not diagnosed for several years. Who knows how well he would've done, had he played healthy?

Hurley was only on his teams in Jersey City because his Dad was the coach there.

Back around 2010, the local Sports network in my area showed weekly re-run episodes of The White Shadow for several years. It was about a White H.S. b-ball coach (ex-NBA player) in the ghetto of L.A. Show originally aired from 1978 to 1981***. Basically, as I noted above, Hurley Sr. was a real life Ken Reeves, except he never played in the NBA and he bought his two sons (Bobby and Danny) with him to play on his all black teams.

I thought Liam McNeely might've been from the city of Houston? I was way off, he's from Plano, Texas. A wealthy Dallas suburb. Surprisingly, Plano has 3 notable players in the NHL (hockey) currently.

***As an oversized teen ESPN's, Jay Bilas appeared (#3) on The White Shadow.

I recall a White Shadow episode where Michael Warren (former UCLA player on the later years of the Wooden championship teams) played a street hustler who was on the run from a mob syndicate that operated in Oakland who claimed Warren owed them money for points shaving and Reeves out played the younger man in a game of one on one and got him to enroll in school on a bet where Reeves would have owed Warren 40 dollars if he lost.

It seems that White Jesus had his career derailed by similar street shenanigans as what the fictional character Warren played. I remember Reeves stating to Warren before the game if he kept on street hustling on the hard courts of Los Angeles he would have shot knees by the age of 25 and would be too broken down to do much without any other job skills as he knew players from Queens who had this fate roughly 15 years before he did.

I think in real life the actor who played Reeves was an all district player from Nassau County who played small school college ball.

Bob Hurley Sr's day job was a probation officer and he was overall a pretty hardcore dude. "Miracle of St. Anthony" is a good book about him, by Adrian "Woj."
