2025 Indianapolis Colts

Bad news for Daniel Jones and the Colts, not only is Jones out for the season, but he may miss part of next season as well.

An opportunity for Riley Leonard, though, assuming the team's "brain" trust gives him a fair chance.

The injury for Jones really sucks. His promising season ended and his future career gets a bit muddled. I hope Riley Leonard can lead the Colts to at least 2 wins in the final 4 games although their schedule is pretty tough down the stretch - Seattle, 49ers, Jacksonville and Houston. It's certainly an opportunity for Leonard who does play the game in a similar way to Jones albeit he was running alot more.

The #Colts are planning to bring potential Hall of Fame QB Philip Rivers into their facility Tuesday to work out to see if he may join their practice squad, per me & @MikeGarafolo.

This is real. Daniel Jones’ season is over, Riley Leonard will start, but Rivers may be an option.

I wonder if they gave Derek Carr or Tannehill a call.

I'd like to see Andrew Luck again.
This could be a comeback that could be made into a movie if he were to win a game or two. Or even had a respectable loss in a Championship game or the Super Bowl.

He spent 5 years not training for football and just soft tossing with his sons and pro football prospects like Leonard who he has mentored in the draft process.

I think he was brought in to be sounding board and unofficial player coach but you never know if things get real bleak he could suit up for them.

The only other situation that you could compare to this was when Steve DeBerg was given the bat signal to comeback missing a similar time length from the league. DeBerg even started a game that season for Atlanta, all DeBerg said he did before doing drills in camp was a daily 18 hole regime at the local country club.

I also heard if Rivers were to be activated to the Colts roster it would set back his probable hall of fame career by another 5 years as an active player isn't eligible for the hall of fame.

Rivers was not going to be a 1st ballot HOFer anyway. Possibly he believes he shows up and leads the Colts to some success can pad his resume. Like when Weddle caught on with the Rams and won a Super Bowl.

Really?? Maybe you watched a different quarterback with the last name Rivers. Philip is easily one of the ten best quarterbacks of all time. He had a brilliant career and I'd rank him with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees as the top four geniuses ever to play the position.

He's in the top ten all-time or near it in virtually every meaningful career category, including 6th in TD passes and 7th in passing yardage. From '08 through '20 he threw for less than 4,000 yards only once. His career TD to interception ratio was better than 2:1. He made 8 Pro Bowls.

The only possible knock on him is that he was never on a Super Bowl winner but neither was Dan Marino. Rivers turned water (more accurately sewer water) into wine over and over, being stuck on teams with bad o-lines and poor groups of receivers. There were seasons when his entire receiving corps was wiped out by injury and he was still putting up 300 yard games. A true master of his craft and it was a delight to watch him play.

Rivers has zero playoff resume. Eli was not a first ballot HOF, even with 2 Super Bowl wins and plenty of cumulative stats. No disrespect, but I had no expectation of rivers first ballot HOF.

Totally agree. Rivers has been overshadowed by his contemporaries but was certainly an elite QB. A lot of fun to watch and part of one of the best QB classes of all time along with Roethlisberger and Eli Manning (and to a lesser degree Matt Schaub).

I don't believe Eli Manning should be a first ballot hall of famer. Strawman argument. Should get in, but not the first time he's eligible. He wasn't the all-time great quarterback his big brother was.

So the Chargers had great teams, playoff worthy, but your position is that Rivers held them back? It's not Rivers' fault that an incompetent organization couldn't build better teams around him. He was one starter out of 22. If Josh Allen continues playing the way he is for another half dozen years or more but the Bills never win a Super Bowl, does that mean he isn't a first ballot Hall of Famer?

Philip Rivers did as much with what he had to work with as any quarterback ever has. He was outstanding year after year, as good as it gets. He was an all-time great, indisputably. I've been watching the NFL for many years and Rivers is up there with Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Steve Young and possibly one or two others as the best quarterbacks of my lifetime, one I went out of my way to watch. I marveled at how good he was.

BTW, "zero playoff resume" is ********. Rivers had a 134-106 record as a starter. He led the Chargers to the playoffs six times and the Colts once. He had a 5-7 record in playoffs, making it to the AFC conference championship in 2007. Again, I watched those Chargers teams, and just like Big Ben put the Steelers on his shoulders for many years while Mike "He's Never Had a Losing Season" Tomlin got a disproportionate amount of the acclaim, Rivers did the same with the Chargers year after year. First ballot Hall of Famer without question.

Man I when I read that dig at Rivers I knew the temp would rise. Anyway does Rivers being drafted by the Chargers make Drew Brees career?

No dig at Rivers. Just an observation that he wouldn’t be a first ballot hall of famer as a quarterback with a mediocre playoff record. Fair or not, that’s a major consideration. Also, I opined that coming out of retirement and leading the Colts to the postseason could enhance his resume. I will be more than happy to see Rivers in the Hall of Fame, and I expect that to happen. Full disclosure, he was never a QB that I particularly enjoyed watching, aesthetically. Maybe that is coming through in my posts. And, I don’t expect my opinion to carry any weight, compared to the ardent Rivers supporters. I will cede to those who followed Rivers more closely.
