My how the mighty have fallen. The New England Patriots, who defied the parity-driven NFL by being a dominant team for 20 years and did so by utilizing a “throwback” offense that was White dominated, are now yet another ultra-black team, down this season to 2 White starters and 9 total on the 53.
There are only five White offensive players total on a team that at times in the recent past had as many as three White receivers on the field along with a White TE, White RB, and four and five Whites starting on the o-line. With Tom Brady as the field general, the Patriots were in the hunt for the Super Bowl every year.
Hunter Henry is the starting tight end. He’s solid but hasn’t quite reached the lofty status expected of an early second round draft pick who’s now in his ninth season. He’s also been plagued by injuries at times. 652 receiving yards in 2019 is his career high.
The starting center is David Andrews.
The bright spot is Drake Maye, the rookie QB who begins the season behind veteran journeyman Jacoby Brissett, which most believe is a good thing as the Patriots are expected to be bottom feeders with a shaky offensive line and unproven rookies and never-were journeymen at wide receiver. Maye would seem to have all the talent to be a franchise quarterback, but the question is whether he will develop properly on what is now a bad team.
The only White defensive player is WSTD/free safety Brenden Schooler, who played exactly two snaps at safety in 2023. As recently posted by CF member Freedom1, Schooler posted the top speed in the entire NFL during Week One of the new season at 22.42 mph. He’s another great example of a talented White player being screwed by the NFL by not being allowed to play other than on special teams. Of course there’s countless more who never even made it as special teamers.
The 2024 Patriots are the anti-Patriots compared to the glory days of the 2010s.
