Thanks jacknyc. Yes just like you said he let off the gas too soon. For the most part he looked great. Wish he could have finished what he started. Second place is alot better than fourth. He will
learn from it assuming it wasn't an injury towards the end of the race. I'm excited to see Jewell, Beck and Boling at the NCAA National Championships. It's gonna be lit like the kids say!

I think he might have felt a little twinge, and stepped off the gas just before the finish.
Later in the 200m, he definitely wasn't feeling right and decided not to complete the race.
Hope he's better for NCAA Championships.

. . . on a personal note, i’m especially disappointed in the lack of our men in the 400m across the field. it’s my favorite event, but there hasn’t been an American man for me to cheer for since Jeremy Wariner was dominating the world stage.

Michael Bluth of BYU was the 2nd fastest qualifier in the West regionals - a very good time of 45.13.
He only ran 46.14 in the qualifying round, so a massive improvement!

Femke Bol ran a new PB and Dutch National Record today in the 400m - 50.56.
She's just 21 yrs old, and her main event is the 400m hurdles.

Jewell looks to have more in the tank, as he’s well behind from the start to about 20m in seemingly every race before his natural speed kicks in. nice to see him finally have a wind-legal race to officially drop his pr after all his strong showings of late. let’s hope he returns to full health for the championships.

if he ever develops his start into a stronger component of his race, there’s no telling how much his times will continue to improve.

additionally, would someone post the videos (if they happen to see them) of the two 400m races jacknyc mentioned? and i think Femke Bol should permanently switch to the flat 400m. she’s becoming a cheetah out there!

Michael Bluth of BYU was the 2nd fastest qualifier in the West regionals - a very good time of 45.13.
He only ran 46.14 in the qualifying round, so a massive improvement!

That is an excellent time - into international territory when 44s is just ahead.
I don't often think our athletes will rule the world in sprints. If they make top international standard (sub 10) that's great.
But I really think Femke Bol is potentially a candidate for world medals in 2 events. She trains with that darling Lieke Klaver who is more muscular and just as tall but doesn't move as efficiently and the difference in speed endurance is noticeable

Klaver is so strong, but you’re exactly right about her lack of speed endurance. i wonder if she has the pure speed to compete in the 200m ...

Bol is so fun to watch. she runs so smoothly, and i haven’t seen her noticeably tie up down the home stretch like so frequently happens in the 400m. clearly her added strength/endurance from the 400 hurdles benefits her there. how fast will she eventually go?!?

Klaver ran 11.42 and 22.83 today, so definitely good speed.

You're right about Bol - very smooth. Never seems to be straining. I like watching her run.
Who knows how fast she will run in the future?!

Here it is:

In the Women's 100m qualifiers White Mexican national Cecilia Tamayo-Garza placed 4th in her heat, as far as I know she is the fastest Mexican female since Ana Guevera and she isn't an obvious doper like Guevera was.

Unfortunate for her she is a long way off from the Mexican national record as Cuban defector Lilian Allen has the national record. Similar to Ana her records are dubious at best due to doping and running for years for Cuba.

Fingers crossed that we will see Jewell at the NCAAs. I don't see any evidence that he felt something in the 100. At the end of the race, he isn't checking himself or walking abnormally. But he pulled up almost immediately in the 200, which might well have been the better of his events. It will be a huge shame if he doesn't run or isn't 100%, as he looks fantastic, except for his start. He runs like Pietro Mennea or Laird--very lithe, with little ground time, but big circular strides. Boling was once more like that, but he seems to be muscling up too much or something.

I just found Shae Anderson running a fine 400 relay anchor leg from yesterday

Unfortunately Shae Anderson tripped and fell after hitting one of the hurdles and came in last in her quarter-final.
Such a shame. She was expected to take the silver medal at the NCAA 400m hurdles championship.

Andrew Robertson of Great Britain ran 10.20 (1.6w) in Greece today.
He's doing very well this season.

Beth Dobbin of GB winning the women's 200m at the European Team Championships in 22.78
The lovely Dalia Kaddari of Italy and Rebekka Haase of Germany, 2nd and 3rd - 22.89 and 23.00

This Polish girl, Pia, is quite an all around athlete.

Anderson struggled in this race, her stride pattern was off for most of the hurdles she cleared. She was just starting to pull away when she fell. She did come back and run a great anchor leg in the 4x400m. She was left with too much ground to make up but closed like a freight train. Dont know why she went to the hurdles when she is obviously a great 400m runner.

This Polish girl, Pia, is quite an all around athlete.

Yes! She has been primarily a hurdler and won the 100m Hurdles at the Euro Team Championships yesterday.
But she also started running the 100m, and also won that at the Euro Team Championships.
The best part - she's only 20 yrs old!

In another southern California meet Corey Crawford jumped 8.05m (26' 5") to win the long jump.
Crawford had a good long jump career at Rutgers, but had been pretty quiet until recently.

Crawford improved his season's best to 8.29 this weekend. That's over 27 feet!
If he can jump like that consistently, he might make the Olympic team.

Devin Quinn 10.19 (1.3w) in the finals. 10.14 (3.1w) in the prelims of the American Track League today.
He looked to be close to the lead at 60 meters.
They clocked 40 yard times enroute, and Quinn ran a 4.23 - fully automatic timing.
