Anthony Gonzalez was drafted in the first round.
My memory of the '05 draft is different than yours. Lyman was injury prone but averaged over 21 yards a catch as a junior and just under an incredible 30 yards a reception as a senior at Cal. He was an unbelievable talent and should have been drafted early based on his upside lol. Being selected by the Saints automatically meant he would get no opportunity in the NFL.
The big controversy over Matt Jones going into the draft was whether he should play wide receiver or tight end. As I've written several times before, my lasting memory from that draft is Jones being selected by Jacksonville and ESPN running a graphic that said "Matt Jones, tight end." The same absurdity that surrounded whether Toby Gerhart and Brian Leonard were running backs or fullbacks, not to mention many other tall and fast White receivers who were pigeon-holed as tight end prospects for the NFL no matter that their metabolisms made it impossible for them to beef up to tight end proportions even if they wanted to.
Fox, Giordano and Considine were all greatly shortchanged by the NFL in addition to Jones. Giordano was super fast and should have been a cornerback at Cal and drafted as such by the NFL. Also, Fox was drafted as a safety not a CB and never got a shot at his natural position.
Just 5 Whites taken in the first round in '05, it was a business as usual draft with a few anomalies.
I trust your memory on Dustin Fox and Matt Jones. I do recall the safety/tight end talk. Jones at least ended up playing WR in the NFL.
But I still would take the 2005 draft over the upcoming 2020 any day of the week. Maybe more that 2005 was a standard issue draft and this one will be particularly bad? I will say Tanner Muse , who many suggest is a LB and Matt Jones cancel each other out. That still leaves three white DBs and a white WR drafted in 2005. We won't see another white DB drafted this draft and it is more likely a white WR will not be chosen. Two white DEs were taken in the second round in 2005 and one hybrid LB/ DL in the first and I don't see any white DEs being taken until the third day of this draft.
