Very good race for Guliyev after a long season. I agree with CrazyFinn that he is a medalist favorite at the world champs.
Lemaitre while not the guy were used to at least put in an ok time compared to some of his other 200 races this season. He hasn't raced enough and is not in good shape.
Taftian looked great winning the 100. Very happy to see him win on such a big stage.
On a side note Henrik Laarson ran a 10.24 0.3 for a win in Sweden today. This 20 year old has had a very good season. Excited to see what he does in the near future. I think
Sweden may have an elite level sprinter in the next 2 to 3 years. I see alot of upside in this kid and he is mentally tough with the will to win. He also has a swagger about him!
I'd love to see Guliyev take Mennea's 200 record before he's done. Together with his titles, a sub 10 and a sub 19.7 will make him the undisputed best ever European 100/200 sprinter IMO
Anyone have any ideas on how to classify the ethnicity of Hassan Taftian? This guy is on the verge of breaking 10.00. He is not black, but he's not white either. Is he a pure Arab? A mix? Sunni, Shia, what the hell is this guy?
Some Iranians have varying degrees of East Asian blood from the Mongolian invasion but most are fully Caucasian. Where Guliyev is from was once part of the Persian empire and the area was seceded to the Russian Empire in the mid 19th century. So you could argue are they are literally Caucasians. Also Iranians aren't one ethnicity the country literally has dozens of ethnic groups and many have a more European look than this sprinter. Andre Agassi's father was Armenian and I'm assuming was paler than this man.Anyone have any ideas on how to classify the ethnicity of Hassan Taftian? This guy is on the verge of breaking 10.00. I saw a documentary on Queen Noor(Arab American wife of the former King of Jordan) and she had an ancestor who had money and challenged his Asiatic racial classification. Back when the US was a country that was implicitly for Whites/Europeans being labeled non White limited economic and political freedoms. Keep it in mind this was in the early 20th century, if you have seen photos of Noor she is blonde and pale but as far as I know she is fully Palestinian.I consider Taftian white in general just like Gemeli. The census in the U.S. also classifies them as white. They are generally white but like other types of whites usually have darker skin/& features.
