PS: As LaChapelle was excelling at UCLA crosstown at USC speed demon Gary Wellman was making waves too. Two great white WRs at UCLA and USC playing at the same time in 1990 when Wellman was a senior superstar and LaChapelle was a freshman flash. Will it ever happen again? Place your bets!
I doubt it will happen any time soon, Shadow.
Had to look up Gary Wellman's stats. I vividly remember how he flashed/"broke out" at the end of the 1993 season for the Houston Oilers (as Warren Moon's favorite 3rd down target) and I figured he'd most certainly be a longtime NFL receiver, with the chance to start, perhaps? Did not happen, not even close. After putting up very modest stats in 1994, he was gone from the NFL for good at the age of 27. Wellman was a smaller receiver, which means he could've possibly fit in much better in the modern day NFL as a slot receiver -- say 2009 to current times due to the Wes Welker effect.
But, as we noted, while it's become easier for white slot receivers these days to make it in the NFL, it's become even harder for white outside receivers (split ends & flankers).....I think one of the reasons the NFL has become a bit more "white friendly" for white slot receivers, is because they are basically taking the place of white fullbacks in the line up. White split ends & flankers are likely having a tougher time, due to the fact that are vying for "black positions". This is probably why, as talented as he is, David Sills has a much tougher road to NFL success than Hunter Renfrow?
P.S: Speaking of UCLA. I've mentioned Sean LaChapelle. Seven years after he left school, the Bruins had an even better NFL prospect in Danny Farmer. He was a dual-sport star (football & volley ball), son of an NFL wide receiver and was very athletic and super productive in college. I figured, like David Sills, he would be slam dunk 1st or 2nd round pick. He lasted until the 4th round, drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bad break. At that time the Steelers had a GM (Tom Donahue?) that was somewhat fair to whites at "caste positions" and drafted the likes of Farmer, Scott Shields, Jeremy Staat, Aaron Smith and a couple others fairly high. Problem was, Cowher had a roster full of angry blacks and had no trouble screwing them over, if it meant appeasing his angry, child-like blacks.
Farmer's career took a quick negative turn when he was "assaulted" by low IQ, racist thug Plaxico Burress in practice. Both were rookie receivers at the time for Pitt. From there Farmer bounced around for a while, had modest success in Cincinnati until Marvin X was hired. Cucky Gruden finally cleansed him from the league at an early age. Steelers really had some angry blacks at that point, just ask rising white star receiver Patrick Jeffers, right after signing a huge contract (for that era) with Panthers he took a direct (likely intentional) hit to the knee cap (patella) in a meaningless pre-season game from Steelers safety Chad Scott, who reportedly had a terrible temper and the IQ of a lamp post.
