Internationally at least, that debate is settled. Messi disappeared today. Although Argentina's failure isn't shouldered just on him. Idiot Sampaoli started Messi up top as a striker, without Aguero or Higuain there instead, was ridiculous and handicapped Argentina for the 1st half. When Messi went wide, or dropped down, nobody was challenging France's CBs. A fitting end for Argentina's terrible World Cup.

I agree. Alexi Lalas is already homo-erotically talking about him here in the U.S. He was good today, but the media overrate him as usual. Having Giroud up top allows Mbappe to have the freedom to do what he's doing. Giroud is actually key to a lot of France's attack, and he makes the system work as the big target. As you mentioned and I mentioned earlier in my post, Argentina was not good. At least at the World Cup, he seemed to be a poor leader. His body language was awful, and quite frankly looked like Ozil more often than not when things went bad. As things stand, France, England, or Brazil winning would be the worst outcomes from our perspective.

France will play Uruguay or Portugal next round... hopefully the winner of that match are able to knock them off.

Uruguay starting 10 whites against Portugal's 7. After Croatia, Uruguay is our best team with a realistic chance of winning. I'm guessing due to Suarez's controversial incidents in the past, and the fact you can't really tell he's part black looking at the guy, the media don't exactly play up his African heritage, at least here in America.

Anyways, back to Uruguay. They haven't let up a goal yet this tournament, and Godin and Jimenez are a great CB pairing. If their attack is able to figure it out, Uruguay could become one of the favorites.

If CF members want a rooting preference for the remaining teams, it'd be:

1. Croatia, Sweden, Russia
2. Uruguay
3. Spain, Denmark
4. Portugal
5. Belgium

That is pretty much it. Five really good options, and two options to cheer for should the first five teams lose.

Also, good analysis of Argentina. Sampaoli also seemed to start all of the teams mestizo players, making them more non-white then they should have been.

The stupid analysts also forgot the great ball by Giroud to set up Mbappe's second goal. You can bet if the roles were reversed, it would've been Mbappe's amazing pass that was talked about.

As for the next match, I'm thinking Uruguay. They've been really organized thus far at the tournament, and I expect their offense to click.

I'd end the list at 3 honestly.Portugal is too black,but the bright side is that Ronaldo will get all the credit,and Belgium is fairly white but the problem is that Lukaku will be praised for everything they do.

They haven't let up a goal yet this tournament, and Godin and Jimenez are a great CB pairing.

Forgot they are yet to concede.They are very solid and Godin and Jiminez as good a CB pairing you are going to see at this pairing,but let's not get ahead of ourselves and remember that they've only faced footballing lightweights like Saudi Arabia and Egypt and a average if competent Russia.

But I agree,Spain(like every tournament) and Uruguay look are best options.And I won't even talk about Croatia so as to not jinx them.

Giroud did brilliantly,but the Argentinean defense was at sixes and sevens really.It looked amateurish at times to be honest,and Mbappe had a bit to do both times to be fair,especially on the first goal.But I'm angry at how everyone else's and especially Pavard's contribution is already forgotten.

Argentina were beginning to dominate and like I said,his goal just shifted all the momentum in such a way that France began to boss around instead and Argentina didn't get close to creating a chance for the next 15 minutes and France began to run riot,thanks to the utter lack of cohesion in the Argentinean defense in no small part.

As for the next match, I'm thinking Uruguay. They've been really organized thus far at the tournament, and I expect their offense to click.

Exactly my thoughts.Suarez is no Ronaldo,but he has a better supporting cast.Plus the momentum is on their side,as Portugal was lucky not to be knocked out,because that Iranian should have scored from that one on one.

A Cavani brace sees Uruguay through to the QFs!! Both goals were moments of brilliance from the striker. I hope Cavani is ok after needing to be subbed off because of that injury. But Uruguay were fairly good at the back, with just a couple of shaky moments from Muslera.

It could be a shame if this is the end of Ronaldo and Messi in international uniforms. Quite a contrast between the two today. Ronaldo was constantly trying to spur on and motivate his team, while Messi was walking around with his head down or in his hands during the match. Still, it could be the end of an era today, although I hope not. Ronaldo is in great shape, and hopefully he makes it to 2022. If he's willing and able, I'm sure Portugal will pick him.

I think Messi is done for,specially considering the frustration that is evident in all parties invloved.International trophy simply hasn't worked out for him.Ronaldo has a Euro medal,while Messi just has a World Cup runners up one.

Plus Argentina has simply too much attacking talent waiting in the wings.Even putting aside Higuain and Aguero,they have young players like Dybala and Icardi who would walk into the starting lineup of most teams.

Ronaldo on the other hand will mostly still be there I think,as Portugal don't have the talent to replace him.Personally,I would play a 35 year old lethargic Ronaldo in my team as a central striker,as his aerial/heading ability and finishing are that good.I can't remember the last time Portugal actually had a competent striker,while they always have quality wingers and another decent one will surely emerge to take Ronaldo's place.

I was in a standing room bar watching both matches yesterday. I will leave you with this nugget. During the second match it was hard to discern who people were rooting for but in the first match it was unmistakable. Apart from a few people nearly EVERYONE in the bar was rooting for Messi and Argentina. Apart from the rooting for the "home" team part of sports ( where white fans routinely root for home team "black" athletes), if white fans are given a choice of who to root for in neutral events they will lean heavily towards whiter teams (players) and root against the blacker teams(players).

When Argentina went up 2-1 the entire bar EXPLODED.

Our commentator mentioned that Spain had completed over 1000 passes as if that was supposed to mean something beyond boring us to death. They rarely ever looked dangerous. Even their goal was a bit of a fluke.

You didn't quote your post properly,so I've tried to fix that.

On topic,you give me too much credit.There are and have been posters here who could not only predict scorelines,but also scorers and the phase of play which would lead to the goal,with some accuracy.

Regarding tiki taka,Mourniho showed everyone how to beat tiki taka way back in 2010 with his limited Inter side.I still fondly remember those days and mourn the fact that Diego Milito didn't win the following Ballon Dor which he deserved.It was on its last legs in the 2010 World Cup and Netherlands almost beat them that day too.

Its ridiculous that this system persists at the grandest stages of football.Look at how Real how shown that the style is well past its sell by date with 3 consecutive Champions league wins.
