Since 2005, BYU started 18, 16, 15, 16, 16, 16, 14, 12, 14, 9, 9, and 8 whites. They add two more starters this year to jump back up to 11. Overall, much like their in-state rival Utah, this is a team with a huge Polynesian presence. The entire starting defensive line consists of Polynesian players and they are scattered throughout every position on the roster. With their second year Poly head coach, it will be telling to see what happens this team demographically. They brought in some good white talent in their 2017 class, however.
Despite the recent decline in white starters, there are still some intriguing players to follow. QB Tanner Mangum is a stud and will have several white pass catchers vying for reps. SS Micah Hanneman is converted CB who hopefully should propel himself into one of the nation's best DBs.
Offense -
QB - Tanner Mangum
FB - Brayden El-Bakri
WR - Talon Shumway
TE - Matt Bushman
LT - Thomas Shoaf
LG - Keyan Norman
RT - Austin Hoyt
Defense -
LB - Matt Hadley
DIME - Tanner Jacobson
FS - Zayne Anderson
SS - Micah Hanneman
Back ups include QB Beau Hoge (Merril's son), RB/FB Kyle Griffitts, WR Beau Tanner, TE Tanner Balderree, FB Creed Richardson, LG/C Austin Chambers, RG Chandon Herring, RT Kieffer Longson, DE Rhett Sandlin, LB Adam Pulispher, FS Austin Lee, and SS Tanner Jacobson. CB Austin McChesney had an interception last year against Cincinnati and will likely see playing time this year. Overall there is good secondary depth on this team.
