Over a decade since beginning my time in Provo, things have changed significantly all over campus, including the racial composition of the football team. Since 2005, they've started 18, 16, 15, 16, 16, 16, 14, 12, 14, 9, and 9 Whites at the 22 full time positions. The Poly Pipeline is going wide open now, and it is especially easy to see on defense. The likelihood of just 8 White starters in 2016 is an embarrassment to tradition, spirit, and honor.

Backups to watch include: QB Tanner Mangum, WRs Mitch Juergens and Colby Pearson, FB Brayden El-Bakri, and FS Matt Hadley.

Offense
QB Taysom Hill
WR (X) Nick Kurtz
LT Brad Wilcox
LG Kyle Johnson
C Parker Dawe
RT Austin Hoyt
TE Tanner Balderree

Defense
SS Micah Hanneman

Col Reb do you think Mendenhall was pushed out or he left on his own?

What is wrong with the damn people running this program? As the Colonel said, what a complete and total embarrassment. Inexplicable. BYU fielded almost all-White teams in the past with fantastic athletes, which consistently were in the top 20 and even challenged for the national championship. It's not like by having all these polys on the team, they are a Top 10 team. They are now majority non-white, and they are a worse team for it.

What mind-blowing, self-destructive stupidity from a group of people, Mormons, who ordinarilly are very good about acting in their own self-interests. Even the BYU basketball team is very heavily White. Maybe Mitt Romney has some kind of influence in the make up of the Cougars football team.

No doubt the Poly coach will worsen/darken things in "Happy Valley" over the next few years. Leonardfan, after hearing Bronco speak in Provo on several occasions, I can't see him leaving BYU for another school unless something else was going on. Yes, he attended a public university, but he's all about Mormondom, so it doesn't add up to me.

I don't know what's going on there. They instituted stronger academic requirements last year to make them equivalent to Northwestern's. I wonder if that was the admin's fight against whatever force (BSPN?) that was causing them to ignore players like Porter Gustin, an in-state 5-star LB from 2015 that was practically begging them for a scholarship, because they were his first choice, to no avail, so he accepted one to USC and is now starting there. White players almost exclusively going on two-year missions doesn't help out any, either.

Their 2017 class, so far, is very White-friendly, including a RB. So, we'll see, I guess.

At least they have two very promising QBs to look forward to in Hill and Mangum. But more melanin and they'd be first round draft picks.

Eh to be fair they are both overaged as prospects. Hill was getting some positive hype in 2014 but he was injured. I think his injury history has put a damper on his pro prospects along with his age (I think he is 26 already). Personally I would of liked to see Magnum named the starter as he would be 23 this year as a sophomore and than if he started his junior year he would be 24 (his rookie season he would be 25 if he left early). Magnum gray shirted and than went on a two year mission. That's kind of the double edged sword with these Mormon players who give up two years to go on missions.

Yeah...an eye opener! ...glancing at the Class of 17' ...feels like i went back in time; what was done behind the scenes to turn this 180??....The Recruiting Services have punished BYU for this Ranking this Class #91 according to 24/7 Sports

Taysom Hill is one of my favorite players..a shame he has been so injury prone with his wreckless style...dude had skills of a Running Back

Hanneman was put on a shorter leash at Corner Back due to his melanin content

Mitch Jergens has some explosive game changing ability

I figured I'd give the numbers on BYU's current 2017 class:

Out of 11 commits, 9 are white!! This includes RB Jackson McChesney, Safety Ammon Hanneman (Micah's brother I assume), 2 DEs, 1 OLB, 2 TEs, 1 OL and a punter.

Wow!! I figured with a Poly coach, they'd be going into full overdrive recruiting them. So far, they don't even have one committed.

Their 2018 is pretty heavy on Polys, so far. I'm thinking for 2017 the new coach just needed to get some quick and eager commitments. So, it does appear that their longer-term trend will be to rely on Polys with a few scattering of Whites. And blacks, where they can get them, for the Corner, WR, and RB positions; and if they can't get them, a Poly will most likely be recruited for those positions, save for an occasional White WR.

LaVell Edwards, who coached BYU from 1972 to 2000, died at the age of 86. He was of course the coach of the national champion 1984 BYU squad, which had an almost entirely White starting lineup and roster, in sharp contrast to today's program, and was widely disliked by the usual suspects in the media for that very reason.

Reading the AP obit on Edwards, I came across this: "Under Edwards, dizzying passing numbers became the norm, and college football fans stayed in front of their TVs late Saturday nights from the 1970s to the 1990s to see just how many points the Cougars could score. Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Ty Detmer and other quarterbacks flourished, and the Cougars grew in prominence, even being voted national champions in 1984."

Which got me to thinking, as it did back in the '80s and '90s as I watched a fair amount of BYU games -- quarterbacks like McMahon, Young and Detmer were widely praised and won numerous awards and were highly drafted and given every opportunity to succeed in the NFL -- but what about the White wide receivers who were catching their passes for all those points? Someone may be able to correct me, but I don't recall a single White BYU receiver being drafted in that same era, or given any opportunity at all in the NFL. Austin Collie, who played well after the Edwards regime, is the only one I can think of who was drafted, and he was head-hunted out of the league after showing loads of talent with the Colts.

It's like when Jake Plummer flourished at Arizona State, in large part because of the excellence of Keith Poole, but only Plummer received credit. But while Poole was at least drafted by the NFL (by the Saints in the 4th round in '97), he was always given the Caste treatment, even when he finished second in the NFL in yards per catch in 1999, the only season he was allowed significant playing time. (In that same '99 season, Tim Dwight led the league in yards per catch, Poole was second and Patrick Jeffers was third; the next year Dwight and Poole were demoted and Jeffers had his knee taken out in a preseason game, an injury which ended his career; such is the lot of White receivers and for that matter almost all White football players other than quarterbacks and o-linemen to some degree.)

Does anyone remember some of the White BYU receivers from back then? Not all were White, but most were. None received even a small fraction of the acclaim that McMahon, Young and Detmer did, so clearly only the quarterbacks "flourished" under Edwards' high-flying passing offense but none of the receivers.

I knew Vai Sikahema(Polynesian) was around during the championship run, but I discovered Glen Kozlowski who had a fairly decent journeyman career in the NFL was on that team too. Other than those two I don't recall a skill player having a cup of coffee in the league from that team.

Ps. I looked up some players before the championship team and quite a few decent journeyman types like Marc Wilson and Gifford Nielsen were from that coaching era. Also journeyman utility back Bill Ring played for BYU.

I also remember that 84' team was maligned for not playing"anybody" and being a gimmicky team. So there was a bias against BYU even back then when the club was a higher ranked team than it is now(in general).

WR Glen Kozlowski was the name i came up with too...knee injury had some effect...Drafted 11th Round by Bears in 86' (today he'd been a rookie free agent)..where he played 6 seasons..given credit for being very fast..caught 3 TD's his rookie year,,,.broke leg returning kick...only 31 career receptions
check this out
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Kozlowski

WR Mark Bellini was a 7th Round pick in 87' by the Colts..played 2 seasons...10 career receptions

In 84' WR Kirk Pendleton ...11th Round/ Falcons?...no stats
82' WR Dan Plater???....4th Round /Broncos
84' TE Gordon Hudson...1st Round/Seahawks...just 13 catches...concussions?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_BYU_Cougars_in_the_NFL_draft

RB Luke Staley 02' was on the verge of becoming a star...way too many knee injuries dropped to 7th Round/Lions & RB Dustin Johnson 6th Round 98' Jets...not sure what happened there

Strange treatment of some talented WR's in the 90's...bringing back memories with those names...
